N INDUSTRIAL boom of healthy character is now on in the Minnesota Transfer terri ritorv, just across the "Univer sity avenue bridge from Mer riam Park. ^Lots in this vicinity for in dustrial sites, which a year ago brought $300 to $800, cannot now be had for less than $.1,000 to $2,000. This increase does not appear to be a dangerous bub ble that may burst at any time, but is the result of a realization of the real' value of this district for industrial en terprises because of its proximity to the Minnesota Transfer company's tracks, giving immediate access for shipment on every line of railroad entering the twin cities without any extra expense for switching from one road to another. In this vicinity have been erected within the past year or two numerous commercial plants, those for manufac ture of sleds, farm machinery, hard ware, all kinds of articles turned from wood, and freight and passenger ele vators. Winston Brothers, the big rail road contractors, have a site of several acres on which they contemplate erect ing a roundhouse and car shops for their railroad building equipment. -Wal worth & Neville, a big eastern concern which manufactures cross arms and oth er equipment of wood for telegraph and telephone companies, will erect a big storagehouse and factory here. Several other concerns have in contemplation the erection of factories. The Transfer district is the natural commercial gateway between the east ern and western markets. The east sends goods in carload lots to storage houses at the Transfer for distribution to' numerous points thruout the west in small quantities. The western trade is Transfer for sale or lease by making the Midway a storage center for small shipments of freight, there to be held till carload lots are accumulated for shipment east at a cheaper rate. For instance, one big house in Boston Has agents thruout the north-west pur chasing wool in small quantities from sheepmen. These small shipments are sent to a Midway storagehouse. When the amount on haiid increases sufficient ly to fill a car, a shipment at a carload rate is made thru to the Boston man ufacturer. On the other hand, a big stove com pany at Detroit, which does a large business thruout the west, is sending stoves, to a certain Midway storage house in carload lots. When their sales man, for example, sells six stoves to a man at Mankato, the stoves are shipped out from the supply on hand at the Mid way storagehouse. Thus both time and the increased freight rate on a small lot shipment clear from Detroit, are saved. The Midway storage district is also in line to cut considerable of a figure with the oriental trade. Big eastern houses whieh are catering to oriental business, are arranging to carry large stocks on hand in storage at the Mid way. From here, when oriental orders are received, the goods will be sent to the Pacific coast by the most direct line to the port from which they are to be shipped across the Pacific. NEW WAREHOUSE CONCERN. The nucleus of the Midway storage business now established, bids fair to tevelop to such an extent as to make the Minnesota Transfer the greatest storage point in the country. The Midway Warehouse company, spoken of under the head of "Lumber Industries,'' has a big general store house here, with a capacity of 300 car loads uWder roof. The company is cap italized at $25,000. Its officers are, G-. W. Dulany, Jr., president and treas urer G-. P. Newmyer, manager R. J. Menz, vice president and secretary. At St. Anthony Park is -the. well known furniture exposition building. This is an immense brick structure, which was described in detail in all the papers at the time of its erectioW. Every square foot of floor space is rented by various furniture ana carpet concerns, and used for general.display and whole sale sales. Last "fall -a- large three-story'- frame building which: for some time "had stood vacant facing University' avenue-"across from the ball park near"Lexington, was given a journey of over a mile and re located at the corner of University and Fairview, There the structure, once a pipe organ factory, has been turWed into a busy wire fence -works. Just where the interurban car turns off university avenue to go into the heart of Minneapolis, located on the edge of the Midway district* is the Len hart Wagon Works, and recently was, the Johnson-Smith sash an'd door fac tory. The latter recently burned down, but it is understood is to arise from its ashes, larger and doubtless more busy than ever. The wagon works establishment is one of the oldest of the Midway fac tories. The plant. occupies one large two-story frame building, and a number of smaller structures, and carries op haWd in adjacent yards, a large supply of lumber. ^Just across the railroad tracks from the Lenhart and Johnson plants, are the well known big Douglas linseed oil works. There is a small brick office building front, facing the street car track, while towering high in the rear are the large steel storage tanks and the company's mill. xi.Th eleetri light-plant at St. Aw- thony Park is an establishment which is doing a rapidly, increasing business. Not so very long a^go this plant was gutted by fire, but with the growing business it had on hand the operation of the plant could not be suspended. It was soon' rebuilt, and is now extending its light and power wires and cables to all parts of the Midway district. The extending of its wires into Merriam Park is especially gratifying to many of .the residents of that suburb who de sire to use electric, light. FACTORIES AT TRANSFER. The fire fiend once in late years tried to destroy this building, but the structure was saved. Two other buildings located near the tracks are abattoirs and meat-packing establishments. These two have been there for years and manage to continue business the year around in spite of the fact that the meat trust has closed up most of the o.ther small slaughter-houses and packers in this part of the country. At the rear of these buildings looms up the big carriage manufactory of the Muckle company, a large brick building which the tornado of last August, par tially destroyedj but which has arisen front its partial ruins in more substan tial form than ever. ..In this same vi cinity is the establishment of the Twin City Varnish company, a brick build ing covering considerable ground. One is the McCormick Harves ter company's four-story warehouse, a building some 250 feet long, and half as deep: The, other ii'Hbe- Central Storage company, with, a series! of long one-story, iron-clad buildings. Just across the Transfer tracks may be seen a big brick warehouse belonging to the Deering Harvester company, about as large as that of the McCormick com pany. Other manufacturing concerns scat tered thru the Midway district include the Harris Manufacturing company, the Western Serapiron company, the North western Lime company, three big lin seed oil companies, the Eagle foundry, Luley & Son Manufacturing company, Manufacturers' Supply company, Grail-Curtis Furniture Manufacturing company. There are also a number of big elevators in this district. They be long to the Northwestern Elevator com pany, the Inter-State company, the Q. W. NEW STREETCAR SHOPS. Ground will be broken at the corner of University and Snelling avenues May 1 for an industry to employ hun dreds of menthe new shops of the Twin City-Rapid Transit company. The^Bhpa of the company in Minneapo lis have always been very much out of the way for repairing St. Paul cars. Tho Midway shops are convenient to each city. The company owns twenty acres as a site for its new shops, and in tends to- cover.7.2 acres with buildings, representing'an, investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars. By far the largest single building will be the new car house, to cover 3.2 acres and to cost $175,000 to $200,000. It will face directly on. The general plan for the car house is a radical departure from existing prac tice, in that reinforced concrete is to be used in all detain, of construction.'
