Fargo, N. D., July 27.With the
ideal weather prevailing for the past
week crops have advanced rapidly and
the wheat is maturing so fast that it
is escaping the possible ravages of
black rust. Nothing but a bad run of
weather can now assist the rust suf
ficiently to injure the crops seriously.
The farmers are noting the weather
conditions closely and_ if it becomes
wet and muggy there will be some
alarm. The predictions for rain have
failed so far. The wheat is now near
ly all in the milk stage and another
week of good weather will practically
insure an abundant yield.

How Wheat in Otter Jail Looks to an
Expert.

Fergus Falls, Minn?, July 27.
George L. Nichols returned from a
tour of inspection of the grain fields
today, and summarizes his observations
as follows:
"The head and stem of the wheat in
this vicinity is clean and healthy. The
leaf has a burned or scalded appear
ance, and is drying up from root to
head. If the leaf is flraw across
white cloth it leaves a trace of red.
There is not a particle of black or
stem rust "to be found on any of the
wheat I have examined. Just what
the effect the drying up of the leaves
will have I cannot say. I believe,
however, it will have a tendency to
hasten the mat-urine of the crop and
possibly will shrink the berry. If we
should have unfavorable weather in
the next week or two, I think the bare
stem will better resist rust than it
would with the mass of green leaf. I
find that the stem and leaf of the
durum wheat, which is presumably rust
proof, is in the same condition as the
blue stem. While no one can yet be
certain of the outcome, the present
outlook is for a good crop. All we
need is a continuation o .ii&st such
weather as we are having now."
NO RAIN WANTED
All Lakota Asks Is Warm Weather

Lakota, N. D., July 27.The farmers
are praying for continued warm weath
er. Crop prospects were never better.
No more rain is required for at least
six weeks, as the ground is thoroly
soaked. So far, there has been no ap
pearance of rust in Nelson county, but
reports are current of its appearance
east of here. The early sown wheat, is
coming along nicely arid is heading out
well. One noticeable feature of the
stands is that the heads are much fuller
than usual, there being eight, ten and
even twelve rows of kernels. This in
itself would indicate an unusual crop,
provided it matures. There is much of
the wheat, however, which is from two
to three weeks bac k. Other grains are
doing fairly well. Corn is backwards.
A CALL FOR MEN
Urgent Demands from North Dakota
for Harvesters.
Xe Moinesf Iowa, July 27.On of the
most urgent calls for harvest hands re
ceived in this city, has come from North
Dakota. A locai employment firm was
notified that 1,000 men were wanted in
that state to harvest the" wheat crop.
The agency immediately gathered 100
men for the first train next week.
Others will be sent later. The .wages
offered were from $2 to $3 a day. Ac
cording to the call, the wheat crop is
very large.
A STUDY IN RUSTS
Professor Smith of Aberdeen Tells of
the Varieties.

Aberdeen, S. D. July 27.Professor
Fred W. Smith, instructor of science
in the Northern Normal and Industrial
school, has made a microscopical exami
nation of the rust on wheat and has is
sued the following report:
A microscopical examination of the
rust which is now affecting the wheat
shows that it is of two kindsthe so
called brown rust and the golden rust.
Under the microscope the spores of the
two species are easily differentiated.
The brown spore of the brown rust is
eliptical in shape while that of the
golden rust is spherical. The black rust
stage of the golden fust is mu,ch more
blunted on the end and its cells have a
different arrangement from those'of the
brown rust. The two speciea cannot be
told apart except by the use of a very
powerful microscope.
"An examination of several fields
shows that there are about equal
quantities of the two species growing
on th wheat now. The spores of the
black rust stage of brown rust are not
fully matured. As compared with the
amount of black rust of last year, as
shown by comparison with the straw
saved over, there is not one-hundredth
as much' on the grain at the present
time. The presence of the golden rust
on the grain should not be viewed with
alarm as it is comparatively harmless."
It Looks Good at Revillo.

Eevillo, S. D., July 27.-All small
grain in this locality looks good, and
flax has never been in a better con
dition. Parties who traveled all over
the neighborhood looking especially for
black rust, could not find any. There
is a little red rust on the leaves, but
none on the stem. Harvesting barley
commenced yesterday. Wheat cutting
is expected to begin in.two weeks.
V-- Crop Notes.
Zumbrota, Minn.The barley harvest is com
pleted and a large share of it is in the stack.
Oats afid wheat are ripening very fast and will
be cut within a week or ten days. No indica
tion of rust, excepting the usual amount of red
rust, has yet shown itself.
Battle Lake, Minn.Black rust exists in a
small degree in the wheat fields, but the pre
vailing weather is not favorable to its spread,
and no serious consequences are feared. Oats,
"barley.,? rye and flax, were never better.
Humboldt, Iowa.A three weeks' drought was
brought to a close by rain, and farmers are re
joicingr. The hay crop, which was a large one.
was put up in excellent shape. Early oats were
a big yield, tbo the late ones are showing signs
of vu'st. Corn is making rapid progress. The
crop outlook har never been better.
Ada, Minn.Farmers in this section report no
black rust on the wheat. Barley is being har
vested.
Clara City, Minn.John Freistaben threshed
his barley today, and the yield was forty bushels
to the acre. Oats and wheat are good.

CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES
Session of a Municipal Union at Win-
nipeg.

Winnipeg, Man., July 27.At yester
day 's session of the Union of Canadian
Municipalities convention there was a
large attendance. The features of the
session were addresses by Louis Bets,
city controller of St. Paul, Minn., and
by" Major Ellis of Omaha. Mr. Bets
spoke on'"Municipal Financing and
Accounting," a subnect on which he has
been invited to speak at the ninth an
nual convention of the League of Amer
ican Municipalities, to be held at Tole
do in August. Mr. Bets declared that
Americans were all anxious to grow
better acquainted here. He stated that
in municipal financing and accounting
a vast improvement could r" brought
about. It was often proclaimed that a
municipality was a corporation and
that'its financial management should be
the same as that of any private cor
poration. This, said Mr. Bets, is an
