Invisible Firescreen.
Tie most attractive screen for anas
open fireplace that I ever saw was
simply a strip of wire mosquito netting,
a little longer than the width of the
fireplace opening, with a small brass
ring fastened,.by means of fine wire,
at the two upper corners. The rings
were slipped over two small tacks
driven into the wall or mantel at the,
right height. The wire is so high that
no sparks can come over and yet there
is space above it to "put on new wood
without touching the screen. The en
jovment of watching the fire is not at
all spoiled, as a foot or two away the
wire netting is invisible.
Homemade Bookrack.
If you are wishing for a bookrack
for a table or desk, and are not able to
afford one of the handsome brass or
burnt wood "ready-made" ones, have
the tinsmith cut for you two pieces of
zinc with rounded ends. Then bend
them thru the middle and lacquer or
enamel them a dull green.
In bedrooms an*d bou,doirs, where it
is not desired to attempt any of the
more historic styles the natural floral
wallpapers bring a freshness and grace
that are delightful, and there is but
one rule that must be followed: Th
wall, in such rooms, must dominate
all other decoration^ and furnishings.
The room becomes a roseroom, or
lilac-room, or a wistaria-room imme
diately the paper is hung on the walls
and the colors used in the room must)
-"match" the walls.
To "match" means to harmonize

another sale, one of several which have
taken place north and south of Henne
pin within the year. The last sale is
at the rate of $1,250 a foot, or $80,000
in all. Thru the agency of the Yale
Realty company the Bradshaw build
ing, at First avenue N and Washing
ton, has been sold to Edward T. Brown,
representing Atlanta capital. The
property has been owned by a joint

HE model kitchen is one that is
constructed on sanitary princi
ples, arranged for comfort, and
fitted with the best devices for econo
mizing labor, says Alice M. Kellogg in
the Delineator. To produce these re
sults, architectural skill, united with a
practical understanding of the needs of
this part of the home, is' requisite.
Too little attention is ordinarily paid
to. the.lighting, natural and artificial, of
the kitchen. Ventilation, a matter of
equal importance, is also often inade
quately planned. The placing of the
stationary furnishingsrange, sink and
dressertakes precedence of the mov
able fittings, but receives in many
houses only secondary consideration.
The aspect of interior attraetability, a
minor but satisfying element to the oc
cupant of the kitchen, is often left quite
out" of the question when this room is
designed, repaired or remodeled.
Authorities differ on the best flooring
to adopt here. Cement, rubber tiling
and inlaid linoleum are impervious to
wear, but each is quite a formidable
item of expense. A wood floor exacts
frequent renewing with paint, oil or
varnish, a process that interrupts the
constant use of the. room. A printed or
plain-colored linoleum is neat, easily
cleaned and of moderate cost.
Cheap woodwork does not pay in the
kitchen^ I paint is put over the wood
a finish it should be well dried and
put on with several coats, to withstand
the necessary washing and cleansing.
Side walis entirely covered with
smooth faced tiles are a luxury, but a
wainscot of tiles will reduce the ex
pense and give good protection to the
walls. A substitute for tiles is made
of enameled zinc in tiled and floral
patterns. Other coverings for kitchen
walls, where the surface will not permit
painting, is a light-weight oilcloth that
is applied as a wall paper. Sometimes
a lining burlap is pasted on uneven
walls and covered with three or four
coats of oil paint.
The color of the kitchen walls is a
large factor in securing a cheerful ap
pearance. Buff is the best color for this
purpose, with the ceiling a lighter
shade. As a dividing mark between
the two tones a dark Bhade of buff, one
inch wide, may be painted below the
ceiling on the side wall. Large ex
panses of plain, painted walls may be
relieved by marking off panels with a
stencil border. When this is well done
the kitchen will be decorated pleasingly
and appropriately at a slight outlay.
A ,good combination of color in stencil
work is a wall of yellow with a border^
of olive green a buff wall with a border
of dull red or terra cotta or a light
green wall with a border of blue.
Cabinets and closets, that are well
constructed and rightly placed are one
of th surest means for minimizing
work. A recess in the wall
offers an opportunity for shelves in
closed with glass doors, and if these are
carried to the ceiling there will be no
ledges left exposed to gather the dust.
To avoid projections in the room the
builder sometimes plans all of the
shelves and cabinets within the walls.
Shelves that may be turned down when
not in use are advantage in kitchens
of small size, and the same idea may ,be
applied in making a seat convenient ^to

In our own American homes flowers
are everywhere, and nothing prettier
could be chosen for the walls of certain
rooms than the Natural flower wall
papers, of which the dealers offer such
immense variety.
There is a decorative license *s well
as a poetic license, and the designer
takes liberties with the flowers in many
cases. The most frequent instance is in'
conventionalizing the flower, which
means that a formal design is made, the
blossom being used merely as a sug
gestion from which the designer creates
an interesting figure. A second license
is allowed in the coloring of the flowers
used in decoration. Blue roses are not
uncommon in wallpaper, and there is
no reason why blue roses should be
banished from our walls. I there are
no blue roses in nature now there may
be some day, or there may have been
blue roses in the past ages, and, at all
eveMs, blue roses are more appropriate
decoration for a blueroom than red
roses would be.
Decoration is an idealization and
need not be too quiekly subservient to
natural facts. I is an art and not a

Suggestions for Andirons, a Crane Fen
der, and Other Utensils.
The reflecting sheen of well-polished
brass, while very beautiful about the
fire, means so much care that wrought
iron is the better choice, at least for
simple households. I is Well to choose
andirons with a long reach backward
to the depth of the fire, as extreme heat
will tarnish brass beyond hope of re
call by any polisher, polish he never so
wisely, and it tends to turn evqn iron
to a gray tone. Genuine old andirons
are likely to be deficient in this respect,
and their lengths "may be supplemented
by vitrified bricks, or steel rails as a
support, for the back-log. Have the
blacksmith fit hooks against the arch
about the opening on which tongs,
shovel, and bellows may be hung. If he
is, also clever enough to hang a crane
within the opening, the pleasant hiss
of steam from a nanging kettle will
cheerfully suggest, tea, toddy, or any
other concoction fancy and the hour
may deem appropriate. Brass fenders
should be high enough to fulfil the pur
pose of their design, yet should not be
too heavy $o remove and give free ac
cess to the fire. A chest is excellent for
holding, a .supply of wood or coal that
failing, a frankly utilitarian wicker
basket is the second choice. Never use
a hanging banner ai inflammable ma
terial for a fire-screen, as the associa
tion of ideas of danger with those of
comfort is always unpleasant.

in harmony and space, not in looking
like a showroom for bric-a-brac.
Cleaning Fine Carpets and Bugs.
One of the best New York carpet and
rug houses lays great emphasis upon
the warning that a Wilton or Axminster
carpet should never be swept with a
straw or splint broom. The corners and
edges should oe lightly whisked or care
fully brushed with a stiff hairbrush,
and the rest of the floor gone over, and
over again if need be, with a good car
pet sweeper. These people say, also,
that velvet or oriental rugs should
never be shaken by hand or beffben on
the line. They should be" swept in the
direction of the nap, and if very dirty
should be laid, face downward, on the
grass, beaten with rattan beaters as
they lie, and then turned and swept on
the right side, renewing the process if
not sufficiently clean.
To Faint Furniture White.'
An amateur furniture-maker gives the
following instructions for white painted
furniture: If the pieces have been
varnished, remove all traces by the use
of adelite. Then give three successive
coats of flat white paint, allowing each
to become perfectly dry. Apply two
coats of prepared white enamel, and if
a polished surface is desired1,
a coat of
thin, colorless varnish. This method has
been tried very successfully. Usually
a dull finish is preferable for all fur
