VERSITY. At the completion of the University
of Minnesota chapel exercises today,
Willard Patten briefly addressed the
university students in the interests of
the coming Minneapolis musical re
vival. Much interest was shown by
the students in the plan for the estab
lishment of musical schools and enough
undergraduates have already signified
their intention of attending the classes
to insure a good attendance at the
three schools planned for the east side
of the river.
Mr. Patten referred to the fact that
a very small proportion of the gradu
ates of the university are able to read
the simplest music, and explained to
the students that fundamental musical
alone were to be taught and
no musical knowledge was necessary to
enter the courses.
At the conclusion of Mr. Patten's
remarks President Northrop spoke
briefly, advising the students to take
advantage of the opportunity to ac
quire musical knowledge. Dr. North
rop stated that he regarded the pro
movement as one of the best
ever inaugurated in the city and he
expressed his belief that the university
would do its share toward supporting
the plan.

Mme. Calve Unable to Evade Enthusiastic
Boston Audience.
News comes from Boston of a most re
markable experience of Mme. Calve at
Symphony hall. That the episode should
happen in Boston, of all cities, is even
more remarkable. After the final number
of her' concert had been sung, the audi
ence refused to leave the building. It
shouted its approval to such an extent
that the gieat prima donna sang six con
secutive encores. Then, when she tried
to make her way to her carriage, the
crowd bari her progress, kissing her
hands and voicing appreciation of her
marvelous art. When Mme. Calve finally
was inside of the coupe the crowd pressed
so closely in an effort to get a last
glimpse of her, both windows of the car
riage were tern out by their sashes. Jt
was fully fifteen minutes before die diva
could pi-oceed to her hotel.
Mme. Calve's Minneapolis concert is

Rev.'J. M. Clearv, pastor of St,
Charles' Catholic church, is inclined to
doubt the truth of the report that
Bishop Seannel of Nebraska has exboth
communicated Miss Hamilton and other
prominent Catholics of Omaha for asit
sisting in the wedding ceremony of a
divorced person.
"There has been, so far as I know,
no legislation in the church covering
this point," said Father Cleary, "bu
the question is one of church discipline
and well within the jurisdiction of the
bishop. The church looks askance upon
the remarriage of divorced persons and
it is of course possible that Bishop
S6annel has taaken the action reported.

countenance it in the concrete. Such
action as Bishop Seannel is reported to
have taken would do much to cheek

Confidence is the life of business. When
a merchant sells a bill of goods and gives
the buyer time In which to pay it, it is "I

in his honesty. The buyer may not have
much money, but he has credit, which

In no other business in the world is 1
confidence such a factor as in the bast?
ness of life insurance. Its very ex*-
istence is dependent upon the confidence
that in the remote, indefinite future. th_
present sacrifice of the policy holder will
bring protection to widow and children.
Today it is estimated that one-half of
the population of the United States, or
40,000,000 people, are directly interested
in the conduct of the life insuranoe com
panies of the country.
How are these figures arrived at? some
one asks. From the annual statements,
of the principal companies of the coun
try it is found that on January 1, lflQ5,
there were 21,082,352 policies outstanding.'
Allowing for the cases where one policy
holder has two or more policies, it Is a
conservative estimate to say 'that they,
represent the lives of 10,000,000 people"*

Protection to Policy Holders.

A few more figures will illustrate how
carefully the interests of the policy
holders have been conserved, and what
absolute protection is afforded them.
These figures are taken from the scat*
reports and pertain to the three largest
companies in the eountry, and therefor*
in the world. From the organization of
these companies up to January 1, 1905,
they have paid to policy holders the etooi
mous sum of $1,587,896,298. ,In addition
to this sum they held at that time for
future payments the sum of $1,251,324,390,
the whole forming the almost lncon*
ceivable total of ot $2,849,220,088. During
that same period the policy' holders haa yj
paid their companies the sum of $2,725,-
255,768. The difference tfetween these
two grand totals is $123,964,920, and tins
represents the sum held for the beneftf
of policy holders.
It is of the greatest Importance at this 14
time, when the public feeling is mors' or
less inflamed by the sensational reports
of insurance Investigation, that the peo
ple should understand that life insur
ance was never sounder or more ably
managed than it is today. Abuse of
power and occasional mismanagement are"
inseparable from the conduct of all great
enterprises, and will be as long as human
nature is constituted as it now is. But
it must be remembered that such
abuses as have been shown have in no
manner jeopardized the soundness of any
company nor impaired the validity of any
contract upon which they have entered.

show where abuses have insidiously crept
in, and will have the tendency to pre
vent them in the future.
Praiseworthy Features Ignored.
The peril of all such investigations is.
however, that they have a tendency to
bring before the public mind all that
is reprehensible in the conduct of the
insurance companies, while praiseworthy
features are completely ignored. The re
sult is not only prejudicial to the coni
panies. but is of incalculable harm to
the policy holders. It instills the element
of doubt and distrust in their minds.
They read of enormous salaries paid
officials of the companies, and acquire the
mistaken idea that they are being rob
bed in order that a few favored men may
live in luxury at their expense. Ther
forget, however, that these are excep
tions to the rule, and that while a few
life insurance officials have been recelv
ing what at first glance appear enor
mous salaries, there is a great company
of officers and managers of life insurance
companies who have received small com-

ensation for their services that they
invested money wisely and profit
ably that their companies are in A con
dition at the present time, and are giv
ing comparatively everybody a "squara
deal."
The timid and unthinking policy holder
reads all these things and decides that
he is being wronged. He discontinues
the policy which he has carried for years
and concludes that he will invest his
money himself. He does this at a great
loss to himself, while the "sensational-
ism'* which appears to be inseparable
from all investigations prevents other
thousands of men from considering a
method of protection which Is the best
ever conceived. It is the man who pay*
and stays, however, who receives the
benefit in life insurance. The man who
drops out loses. In that case he does
not get back all the money he has paid
in, and there is no good reason why he
should. A contract is a contract, and
sides should-keep it.
It is just as true, however, now. as
has been for the last half of a centrury,
that people need and must have Ilia
insurance. Nothing win take its place.
No estate can be provided for with so
little money as by life insurance, and
therefore it Is to be hoped that good men
everywhere wifl favor the business going
on, commending those who manage it
well, do what is right by the polloyi
holders, as well as by their companies,
and condemn mismanagement whenever
it is exposed.
The Matter of Salaries.
A great deal of stress has been placed
upon the big salaries that

them receive twice as much as the Presi
dent of the United States, and -commented
upon as if this was a heinous offense.
It is the opinion of a great many people
that the President is most inadequately
paid, and it is doubtful if there would be
many protests against a proposition to
double his salary.
But any comparison fthis nature to
absurd. There are plenty of men in. the
United States, directing the affairs of
great corporations, who receive more than
the President does, and a few who receive
twice as much, without exciting any com
ment that they are overpaid, or that the
stockholders In their corporations are be
ing robbed in order that they may enjoy
fat salaries. Experience has shown that a
cheap man at the head of a great In
stitution Is the roost expensive person
that can be employed. TSspedally is
this true of life insurance, where it would
be easy for an inexnerlenced man to lose,
twice the amount of his yearly salary in
a single day in the investment of its
trust funds. As a matter of fact, the
big salaries paid by some of the com*
panics are not an imoortant matter in
'their management, and are Infinitesimal
compared with their vast resource*.
