American Association of Fairs
Sets the Dates for Next
Year.

Chicago, Dec. 21.The annual meet
ing of the American Association of
Fairs and Expositions, held last night
at the Grand Pacific hotel, was enliv
ened by a sharp encounter in which
representatives of the agricultural in
terests of Iowa and South Dakota were
principals and which intimately con
cerned three other states. The differ
ence was occasioned by the report of
the committee on arranging dates to
be suggested for holding state fairs.
The settlement of the dispute will be
left to the boards or agriculture of the
several states.
Following are the dates suggested by
the committee for holding the several
state fairs:
Iowa-'-Aug. 21 to 31.
MinnesotaSept. 3 to S.
OhioSept. 3-to 8.
NebraskaAug. 31 to Sept. 1.
IndianaSept. 10 to 35.
Kansas "CitySept. 10 to 15.
"WisconsinSept. 10 to 15.

Serve Time for Dodge
Morse Plot.

New York, Dec. 21.Abraham H.
Hummel has been convicted of con
spiracy in connection with the Dodge
Morse divorce entanglement and sen
tenced to one year's imprisonment in
the penitentiary and to pay a fine of i
$500. Upon a certificate or reasonable
doubt and $10,000 bail, Hummel will
remain at liberty at least until the ap
peal from the present conviction has
been decided by the appellate division
of the supreme court.
Story of the Case.
Charles T. Dodge and Clemence
Cowles were married in 18J7. In 1889
they separated. Dodge living south and
his wife in New York. In 1897 Mrs.
Dodge asked her husband to consent to
a divorce, which he did, visiting New
York for the purpose of accepting serv
ice. Mrs. Dodge got her decree in 1898.
Charles W. Morse and Clemence
Cowles-Dodge were married in 1901.
Morse's uncle, Captain James Morse,
determined to break up this marriage,
retaining Hummel, for the work, under
a fee of $15,000.
Hummel brought Dodge to New York
and induced him to sign an affidavit
swearing he had never been served with
notice of his wife's suit. This affidavit
was perjurious. With this affidavit,
Hummel began proceedings to set aside
the Morse-Dodge divorce, having a
dummy (Herpich) before the referee
to personate Dodge.
Dodge's Flight..
The referee recommended the annul
ment of the marriage, and Hummel paid
Dodge $6,000. Sweetzer, the lawyer who
had represented Dodge in his' wife's
suit, then charged Dodge with perjury.
Persons employed by Hummel at once
started with Dodge for Mexico, but
were apprehended in Texas, and Dodge
was held for extradition.
A long fight ensued, during which
Morse's uncle was required to advance
to Hummel $62,000 for expenses of
fighting Dodge's extradition and keep
ing the party in Texas, where, it is
charged, Dodge was regularly fed on
wine and brandy, in an effort to kill
him before he could be got back to
New York.
Dodge was at last extradited. Upon
his return to New York, he confessed
to District Attorney Jerome that he had
made the perjurors affidavit denying
service of notice of his wife's suit for
divorce at the solicitation of Hummel.
Hummel's indictment followed, the
charge against him being that, by this
spurious affidavit, he endeavored to in
validate the Dodge-Dodge divorce,
which was regular and lawful, and
thereby annul the Morse-Dodge mar
riage, which also was lawful and reg
ular.
