Abraham Lincoln's birthday anniver saiy was observed with a reception and musical by the state society of the Daughters of the Eevolution, given at the home of Miss Harriet Brown, 3104 First avenue S, last evening. Sixty members of the society and a group of friends had been bidden and enjoyed the program. Miss Charlotte Cook was tho violinist Burton H. Twitchell sang two charming solos Eoger D. Conant gave organ selections Miss Luella Woodke sang "O, Dry Those Tears," and Miss Mabel Abbott played an in strumental solo and also the accompani ments. Blue and gold, the D. of E. colors, were used in the decorations. Sunny jonquils made a setting for the blue, and great clusters of" the flowers filled baskets and vases. Coffee and wafers were served in the dining room from a table all decorated in gold and blue. iYellow tapers in tall holders illuminated the table and made a circle for a Jap anese basket filled with daffodils and tied with a huge bow of blue. Mrs. Floyd Muckey poured coffee, and assisting her were the directors, of the Bociety, Mmes. Jacob H. Cook^ A. T. Anderson, Washingon Yale and Misses Alice Williams, Sara Ankeny and Nel lie Trufant. The young women of the newly organized D. of E. chapter dis tributed the programs and were the ushers. Miss Anna Satterthwaite, a "gieat-great-granddaughter of Betsy .Ross, Misses Marian Tuttle, Bertha Kneeland, Annabel Painter and Jose phine Schain were in the group. Mrs. Conant of Wells, Minn., Mrs. H. W. Palm, and Mrs. J. T. Schain of Brown Yalley, Minn., were among the guests. A Midwinter Picnic. Mmes. Frank Mix, H. B. Merrick and James T. Moore, entertained the Ladies' Shakspere club at a novel af fair this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Mix on Portland avenue. It was the annual midwinter picnic of the club, but it had a number pf most unusual fea tures. Miss Sercombe, a sister of Mrs. Mix, has recently returned from a visit of several years in the Philippines and' she brought back a splendid collection of curios from the- & $'. m^ islands, from China and Japan. This afternoon the parlors of the Mix residence were transformed into a corner of Japan with lanterns, fabrics, porcelains and other curios and an interesting collection of Japanese boots and shoes attracted considerable attention. On the second floor Chinese decoration and curios with the beauti ful embroideries of China were arranged, and the third floor represented the Philippine islands. Miss Sercombe gave a talk on each country and a group of young women in costumes, the Misses Merrick, Misses Maude Moore, Ina Sackett, Helen Dunn and Frances and Margaret Mix, served appropriate dainties, tea cakes and bitter tea in Japan, ginger and tea in China and odd little cocoanut bonbons done up in leaves and tied with straw in the Phil ippines. A delightful musical and literary pro gram was given by Miss Agnes Lewis, who is a pupil of Miss Clara "Williams, Miss Frances Pauly, a pupil of Miss Birkenhauer of the Johnson school, and MIBS Gertrude Sayre, Frank McDonald and William Engelman, pupils of Miss aud Moore of the Johnson school. After the program refreshments were served in the dining room, where red and white hearts, red tapers and iSmilax were very suggestive of valen 'tine day. Governor Johnson a Guest. Governor John A. Johnson was the guest of honor at the midwinter lun cheon, which the club women of the eighth district gave yesterday at the Spalding in Duluth. The affair was a brilliant gathering of the club women of northern Minnesota and covers were placed for 290. Baskets of daffo dils decked the tables. The guests were all seated when the speakers, led by Mrs. J. L. Washburn, president of the state federation, and Governor Johnson entered, while the orchestra played "Hail to the Chief," Mrs. Washburn acted as toastmis tress and Governor Johnson was given an enthusiastic greeting. He spoke of the opportunities offered in Duluth for the work of the club women and for the development of the young people. Others who responded to toasts were Mmes. John McLeod, J. H. Crowley, W. S. Wood, Alex Milne and Rev. J. W. Powell of Duluth and Mrs. Irvine Len root of Superior. Governor and Mrs. Johnson returned to St." Paul on the afternoon train.
