\'M* City News LAST REPORT MADE BY SECY GODDARD BETIBING OFFICER OF Y. M. C. A. REVIEWS WORK. Great Progress Along Many Lines Shown Since Came to the Minne apolis Association Eight Years Ago A Farewell Reception Held at the 1 Building Last Night. a Farewells to Secretary H. God-of dard of the Young Men's Christian As sociation, and Mrs. Goddard, were voiced at a reception in their honor last night by Hector Baxter, vice presi dent of the association, for the board of directors, and by Hilleary L. Mur ray for the members. Refreshments were served and a musical program was given under the auspices of the women. The presentation of a handsome purse to Mr. and Mrs. Goddard by the direct ors was a feature of the evening. Mr. Goddard's Work Reviewed. Mr. Goddard's final report as secre tary, presented to the directors yester dav, -was a review covering the seven and one-half years of incumbency. I part it read: MEMBERSHIP DEPARTMENT. "At the beginning of mv adminis tration the total membership of the association was about 62a. I the last two years it has reached 1.525. At the present time, exclusive of subscribers to the current expense fund, it is about 1,350. EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT. "At the close of the season of 1897-8 the total enrollment in the night school was 164. A limited number of branches was taught, the work was of a some what superficial nature, and quarters and equipment were poor. Only a part of the tune of one man was given to supervision of the work of thte depart ment. ^'During the season of 1898-9 re ceipts from class fees were but $416. At the close of the last school year 569 different students were enrolled. Thirty classes were conducted, twenty-one teachers employed, and the entire time of one man ana part of the time of an other were required for supervision. Seven rooms were used for the work, and the receipts from class fees were $2,102. "For this season the total enroll ment is over 500. By the close of the year it will be practically the same as last year with slight increase in re ceipts from class fees. The work is of a most substantial and practical na ture and is proving of great value to that class of young men and boys who are dependent upon their own resourcea for a livelihood, and have not been able to enjoy the privileges of even a good public school education. REXJGIOTJS WORK DEPARTMENT. "Seen yeais ago the work of this department was most limited. The at tendance at Sundav afternoon meetings was small. Only about twenty-five men Were enrolled in the Bible classes. No shop or factory work was done and nothing along missionary lines was being attempted. Last year the average attendance at forty Sunday afternoon men's meet ings was 311. Twelve different Bible classes were conducted, the enrollment in which reached 222 different men. Two shop Bible classes were conducted, one at the Bardwell-Robinson factory and one at the streetcar shops, with an average weekly attendance at each for the season of 126, and in the neighbor hood of $1,100 was contributed to the support of the work of B. A. Shuman in Buenos Aires, South America, and that of Arthur Tibbitts among the Sioux Indians of Nebraska and the Da kotas. Two years ago Mr. Norton was em ployed to give his entire time to the development and supervision of this de partment of the association's activi ties. Last year 103 men declared their determination to lead better lives. PHYSICAL DEPARTMENT. Seven years ago the total faimber of young men and boys using the physical department was in the neighborhood of 350. Seventeen classes a week were conducted, most of them rather poorly attended. The total number of lockers in the department was 350. The work was not organized and was notpenses appealing to the young men and boys of the city. According to the report of Physical Director Booth, last year in the neighborhood of 1,000 different men and boys were using the depart- CERTIFICATE OF AMENDMENT OF THE AB TICLE8 OF INCORPORATION OF "KENNE- DY, SUFFEL & ANDREWS." KENNEDY. SEWALL D. ANDREWS. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 3th *_y of March. 11)06. CLARENCE E. DRAKE, JV Notarj Public. Hennepin Oountv. Hffi'Jy ment. Twenty^Oight splendidly attend ed classes were conducted each week, the attendance at many of which was so large that fhe capacity of the gym nasium floor' was not sufficient to sat isfactorily accommodate them. The number of lockers in the locker rooms has been increased to a thousand, prac tically all of which are in use. The work has been thoroly systematized and organized and splendid results se cured to those who were in regular attendance. The entire time of two capable directors is now demanded to satisfactorily handle the work. They are assisted in special workboxing, fencing and wrestlingbv outside men. The bath and locker rooms have been carefully remodeled at a cost of about $8,000, and our bathing plant is now one of the best in the country. A commodious and pleasant room has been provided and furnished with large lockers and private bath con nected, for the exclusive use of busi ness men. A separate room has been furnished for the boys. While the mem bership of the association is not so large as it should be I believe that a larger per cent of the membership is using the physical department system atically than would be fodnd in most the associations of the country. BOY'S DEPARTMENT. Seven years ago about seventy boys were coming to the association for phy sical work. For two years we attempt ed tc quarter them in small and unsatis factory rooms in the basement. W then emploved Mr. Cartlich to devote his entire time to the department and set aside one room on the mam floor of the building and one on the second floor to the exclusive use of the boys. At the end of Iwo years we remodeled and equipped the house at the rear of the mam building and moved the bovs into th.it From that time the work has developed rapidly until now practically evcrv line of work that is being carried on for the men in the main building is being undertaken for the boys iii their department. The "boy's department is a thoroly organized and carefully conducted association in itself, tho a part of the whole work. "Lust year two Sunday afternoon meetings for boys of different ages were conducted with an average attendance of thirty-three and forty-five. Nine Bible classes were conducted in which eighty-one different boys were enrolled. In the educational department ninety two different employed boys were en rolled. Classes in "grammar, penman ship, spelling, arithmetic and algebra were conducted. "In the physical department the av erage attendance'for the season for the juniors was fifty-three for the interme diate boys, twenty-four, and for em ployed boys, thirty-three. Aside from these, classes for leaders of each branch were conducted. Forty-two boys at tended the boy's camp. A number of outing trips, exhibitions, etc., were con ducted. In the social department there Was large aJtivity. "The present membership of this de partment is 362. This board must recognize imme diately the pressing need of a large, thoroly modern and well-equipped build ing to be used exclusively by the boys. This phase of the work is vital and must be given more and more thought, attention and support. MISCELLANEOUS. "The number and quality of social and entertainment features of the as sociation has been very largely in creased. "The employment bureau has been doing a limited but good work. "The boarding-house directory is carefully conducted and bringing some revenue into the association. The interior condition of the build ing has been greatly improved and al tered. Something like $8,000 has been expended in completing and finishing the rear halls, adding seven rooms for lodging purposes, putting in four class rooms for night school purposes, finish ing two rooms on the second floor o_ the building, putting temporary finish on the auditorium, putting down hard wood floors, putting in mantels and grates and otherwise improving the building. BUSINESS. "The financial condition of the as sociation, while not in any respect what it ought to be, has been vastly improved. Our credit is all that we could wish. We have for the last four or five years been able to pay our bills with a fair degree of promptness. We have in addition to putting some $8,000 in improvements on the building and $8,000 in alterations and repairs in the physical department, paid the $40,000 mortgage. The property is today abso lutely free from all incumbrance, the only obligation resting against the as sociation being the $2,500 loan which it was necessary to make in order to complete payment for the physical de partment improvements. I consider the association today in the best finan cial condition it has known since my coming to Minneapolis. The total ex of the association during the year ending June 1, 1899, were $14,045. Of this amount, $6,055 was secured from subscriptions. The re mainder was secured from membership and class fees, locker and room rent als and sundry sources. For the year end ing June 1,1905, the expenses we're $24,785. Of this amount, $6,969 was secured from subscriptions and the remainder from the other sources mentioned. "In other words, while the member ship of the association has increased practically 135 per cent, the number of men enrolled in the night schol 220 per cent, the attendance at Sunday men's meetings 172 per cent, and at Bible classes 400 per cent, the number of men and boys using the physical department 190 per cent, the number of boys in the boys' department 260 per cent, and the work of the boys' department prac tically all new, the expenses of the as sociation have increased only about 75 per cent, and the amount of subscrip tions received from business men has increased less than $1,000, or about 15 per cent. Thus it will be seen that the financial burden for the current sup port of the work has been borne an increasing degree by the members ot the association themselves. "In glancing over the annual report of the Portland, Ore., association, which does a work of practically the same size and volume as ours.. I notice thta their expenses for last year were, in round numbers, $32,900. "This would seem to indicate that under your direction the work of the Minneapolis association has been carried on on an exceedingly economical basis. If you will allow me a suggestion, it seems to me that the time has now come when a more ag gressive policy should be adopted and tho public appealed to for much more, money with which to enlarge and carry on this most practical work. Work Is Far-reaching. E. W. Decker, vice president of the Northwestern National bank, and a di rector in the association board, said today: "Recently. I was present at the annual banquet of the boys' depart ment, attended by over three Hundred boys, 171 of whom were employed. I heard those employed boys subscribe from 50 cents upward to the building fund, for which the maximum single subscription was $16. Last year the boys subscribed $600, over $400 of which has been paid in cash. "Here is an educational institution which is doing a work not covered by any other in the city.
