St. Louis Road Cancels Special Pas
senger Rate to Golden Gate Because
Business Is Not WantedNorth
Coast Cities Expected to Be Drawing
Cards This Summer.
The St. Loui9 road has called off its
special passenger rates to San Fran
cisco for this week. The city declines
to receive outsiders except laboring
men, and the peculiar situation is pro
sonted that the railroads are hustling
as many persons away from the coast
as they can carry, taking them for
nothing if they have no money. This
is being done at a time when specially
seductive iates are usually offered to
induce the public to travel westward.
The result is expected to be this
simmer that roads reaching north
coast points will have all the tourist
business they can carry, especially so
if the several conventions slated for
the summer are diverted to Portland,
as is now expected. This will make
the business thru Minneapolis heavy.
A far east as Denver laboring men
are offered free faTe to Ban Franciso.
They are needed in building up the new
city. This demand has not reached as
far east as Minneapolis, but if the
necessary supply of hands is not se
cured before the far -west labor market
is satisfied it is likely that transporta
tion will be offered half way across
the continent, or from Minneapolis to
San Francisco.
"Whether morbid curiosity of the
American people will stimulate travel
to San Francisco later is only a matter
of conjecture, but as soon as the scare
over the frequent earthquakes has
passed it is expected that the tide -will
turn to the fated citv again, and that
it will become a great sight-seeing
point until the woik of reconstruction
has destroyed the interest.
GREAT NORTHERN BEGINS WORK
Grand Forks Will Get $300,000 Worth
of Improvements.
Grand Forks, N. D., April 30.Plans
have been received here for a new pas
senger station at Devils Lake, to be
constructed early this vear by the Great
Northern. The building will be of
brick, one story high, 120x40 feet in
size. It will be supplied with con
crete platforms, a new departure in de
pot building in this section of the1
country.
Libby & Nelson, Minneapolis, began
work here today on a new brick freight
depot for the Great Northern This
structure is the first active work started
on impovements that will aggregate at
least $300,000 which are planned for
Grand Forks this season, including a
70-foot extension to the stone passen
ger station, a larger roundhouse. ,pil
house, machine shop, coal tipple, and
the rebuilding of the railroad yards at
a point west of the city.

tion, a distance of three miles, and* the
line to Neche will start from a point

NEW BANKS ORGANIZE
Capitalists Beat Railroads in North Da
kota Towns.
Grand Forks, N. D., April 30.There
will be three towns on the Great North
ern extension from Aneta to Devils
Lake. The town nearest to Aneta will
be McVille, the next town Tolna, and
the town on the reservation, nearest to
Devils Lake, will be Creel. F. H. Well
come, Minneapolis D. "W. Tallman,
Willmar N. B. Felton, Grand Forks E.
0. Olsgard, Lakota Henry Telander,
Petersburg and J. A. McDougall, La
kota, have organized state banks for
each of these towns, and work will be
gin at once on the construction of
brick bank buildings. The banks will
operation before the railroad, is
completed.
ANNOUNCES NEW BOAT
Scandinavian-American Line Acquires
ttLe Steamer "O. I". Xietgen.'*
The Bcandinavian-American line an
nounces that it has added to its fleet
the 8,500-ton twin-screw steamer
C. F. Tietgen," which is fitted up
with all modern improvements. The
boat will sail from New York May 17
and June 28, making close connections
with North Cape and/Fjord steamers.
The last-named date has been fixed
With special reference to the conve
nience of professors and teachers. On
both trips the "Tientgen" will stop
at Copenhagen, at which point passen
gers mar stay over for a brief time and
also make connections for Hamburg and
Berlin.

South Dakota Towns Feel Effect of
Railway Extension.

BonesVeel, S, D., April 80.The
Nortn-Western railway right-of-way
agent has secured the right-of-way for
the building of the railroad west of
the Tripp county line, thirty miles from
Bonesteel. Lots in the towns of Her
rick, Burke and Gregory have taken a
jump skyward, owing to the fact that
the company has assured them that it
will build to the towns. This, with the
as3uran.ee that Tripp county, will un
doubtedly be soon opened for settle
ment means an era of prosperity for
Bonesteel and Gregory county. Thou
sands of acres of wheat and oats have
already been sown on the reservation
lands.
