Walker, an all-around confidence man and alleged mining expert, who at dif ferent times has posed as Bay 6tan nard Baker, John D. de Forrest and John D. la Franc, and who in the two years that he is known to have been in Mon tana, has duped several wealthy mine owners and gained entree into the best society, was convicted at Boulder to day of forgery. The escapade which has brought him to the prison door was in his connection with the Baltimore mine, near Boulder, in October of last year. He gave a woman, with whom he made an arrange ment for boarding miners a bogus check for $2,857. Shortly afterward he dis appeared and was caught at Mildred, Utah, where he gave another worth- The career of Walker has been re markable. Two vears ago h6 appeared at Lander, Wyo., where ne represented himself to be Bay Stannard Baker, the famous political economist, and hav ing a scheme which was to put the beef trust out of existence. He negotiated in the name of the Eothschilds for the purchase of thousands of cattle and townships of lands. Th first payment watj to nave tee made on a certain day, but when the time came Walker (lisanDeared He next was heard of at Virginia City, in this state, where he appeared as Baker, and secured an option on the famous Kearsarge mine. Ten thousand dollais was to have been paid on a cer tain day, but when the day arrived Walker had again disappeared. Not long ago, while in the Xiittte Bcckies, where he was received as min ing expert, he tendered a magnificent banquet to his friends. At his direc tion, the hotel proprietor secured the choicest of everything. On the evening of the banquet the guests arrived and patiently awaited the arrival of their host. Walker failed to appear and was not again heard of until his last esca pade. At the trial at Boulder Walker denied that he had ever been in Lander or Vir ginia City and his defense was lapse of memory.
