Journal Special Service. Lebanon, N. H., May 9.Ethel Stur tevant, who is known as "the trance" girl," remains in jail.in Hanover Jesse Borden lies at the point of death.' The uncanny girl vows that spirits often call to her, throw her into a trance and then communicate their wishes to her. She must obey them, for they dominate her completely. "The spirits, who often talk to me, told me my mother would die of pois on soon and that her death would be called a suicide," said Ethel today. I told mother of the spirits' predic tion and she and I qften talked about it. It worried her, because she knew I got my information from the spirits.'' Bays She Was Target. The police really think it possible that, impelled by the mystic powers, which, she says, sometimes possess her, she may have shot Borden. Borden is 21 years old. He stopped courting Ethel last December. He re iterates that she wrote asking him to visit her last Thursday night and that, while they sat on a stone wall near her home, she shot him in the right breast. She not only continues to deny that she shot Borden, but says that someone shot at her when, hearing Jesus' voice out side her home, she went to see what he was doing there. Bought Arsenic. Miss Sturtevant, it has been learned, bought arsenic, just before her moth er's death in this city three years ago. Dr. D. A. Dunn of Brockton, who, with the police, investigated Mr. Sturte vant 's suspicious death, declares the girl's mother died with all the symp toms of arsenical poisoning and that Ethel finally admitted that she bought an ounc of the poison to kill -rats,'' and hid it under the carpet in her mother's room'. There most of it was found. UNION MEN TO HAVE OWN LIFE INSURANCE Cincinnati, May 9.That a movement is under way for the organization of a life insurance company for the bene fit of union labor developed during the discussion of insurance in the conven tion of the Commercial Telegraphers' Union of America, in sessionto The1 Ever" Club here. matter has been left the tel egraphers, who will report to President Gompers of the American Federation of Labor. It was announced that all mem bers of labor unions will be asked to withdraw from the old companies and to give support to a proposition to amalgamate all labor insurance moneys into one huge fund. The subject already has been pre sented to several other labor organiza tions and favorably considered by them. THINK BOYCOTT WANES Fear of Growth of Anti-Foreign Move ment "Surprise to Chinese. Peking, May 9.Statements that there is apprehension in the United States that the boycott of American goods is growing have -paused surprise here. All the information obtainable shows that the movement is waning. The custom\ report for 1905, just is* sued, shows that the American imports were 77,000,000 taels compared with 29,- 000,000 in 1904. The importers made enormous speculative purchases early in the year, chiefly in anticipation of war demands, and increase would be natural under any circumstances until these stocks are distributed. The report says that the result of the boycott is not what had been expected. Much suspicion and hostility were cre ated, but the general verdict is that not much injury has been done to American manufacturers or merchants. The final effect, however, cannot be judged until the close'of another year or even later. The only immediate results are visible. CASTRO TO UULE AGAIN Friend S%ys Former Executive Will Be Venezuela's President. New York, May 9.General Samuel Pearson, representative of General Cas tro, former president of Venezuela, says today that General Castro has not left that country. Castro, who temporarily resigned the presidency a few weeks ago, will, according to General Pear son, be asked to return to" power on May 23, the anniversary of the starting of the revolution by him for the over throw of the Andrade government. The financial situation is .somewhat lepressed. General Pearson said, owing to the heavy drain on the treasury to meet the foreign claims and to support the army. But the present season's crops have been. exceedingly good and with fair prices realized for coffee, and the extraordinary prices paid for Vene zuelan cocoa, he believes that the finan cial situation will be remedied. OUSTED MAYOfc RE-ELECTED Rose of Kansas City, Kan., Receives Big Plurality. Kansas City, Mo., May 9.William W. Bose, democrat, who resigned the of fice of m&ydr of Kansas City, Kan.,, re cently pending state ouster proceedings against him for non-enforcement of certain laws, and who was later ousted by the supreme court, which disre garded his resignation, was-re-elected mayor by 1,600 plurality over E. E. Venard, republican, and David Harris, socialist, at a special election today. The issue of the election was the en forcement of the prohibition and anti gambling laws. Rose was supported by the element which believes that the best interests of the city demand the licens ing of joints and gambling halls, as they maintain that a strict enforce ment of the law against such places de prives the city of necessary revenue: Many women voted and most of them supported Venard. JTOY/LETS JORDAN GO Alleged Wife Murderer Found Not Guilty at Fergus Falls.
