New York, May 9.Private advicea
received by steelmakers in this city in
dicate that the strike on the (Treat
lakes will be settled in a few days.
One dispatch says negotiations are
progressing satisfactorily and that it is
a question of only a short time when
navigation will be resumed.
Cleveland, Ohio, May 9.Some un
derground work to end the 'longshore
men strike is being done.
The dockworkers' end of the, trouble,
which has practically tied up the ore
trade at this end of the route, except
at Buffalo, will be the first to be set
tled, and agreements with the other
unions that affiliated with the 'long
shoremen's association will soon follow.
Diiluth, May 9.The open-pit mine
known as the Morris, one of the large
and newer producers of the Hibbing
district, which was shut down on ac
count of the marine strike, resumed
operations today. The strike does not
mean a complete tieup at the mines.
Some ore is moving on all the roads to
the head of the lakes, tho the volume
is greatly reduced.
BOARD OF TRADE, NOW,
FOR BAYONNE WOMEN

New York. May 9.The possibility
of a board or trade composed of women
has set femininity in Bayonne, N. J.,
talking, and many stand ready to join.
The proposition to organize such a
body was made at the monthly meeting
today of the Board of Trade by James
S. Coward, one of the most prominent
and wealthy members. Mr. Coward is
chairman of the committee on streets
and when called upon for a report said:
I am sick of making reports. Wo
have psked the council on several occa
sions to take some action to abolish
the nuisance of flat wheel trolley cars
on avenue" C, which keep residents
awake half the night, but nothing ever
has been done to remedy the nuisance. I
do not like to be snubbed by the city of
ficials nor have this board snubbed. The
council regards us, apparently, as a lot
of- schoolboys. If we had as many wo
men on this board as we have men, then
something for the city's good would ba
accomplished in short order. I would
like to see a woman's board of trade."

CHARGES SHE FORGED
TO OPEN JAIL DOORS

New York, May 9.Revelations
which will amaze- exclusively social cir
cles here resulted from the arrest of a
beautiful woman of 32 on a charge of
forgery. The alleged crime was in
spired by love, and had for its object
the liberation from Ludlow street jail
of Charles F. "Wenham, formerly one of
the best known railroad traffic manag
ers in the country.
It is charged by John L. Jordan, a
notary public, the woman signed the
name of Wenham's wife to a quit-claim
on property valued at $100,000, hoping
thus to get possession of $40,000 in cash
with which to furnish bail for Wenham.
The prisoner was recognized in the
Tombs police court as a woman who has
been welcomed: in the homes of promi
nent residents of New York, Chicago
and Toronto and who has been seen
much among wealthy Americans abroad.
She was crazed with grief because of
the position in which she found herself.
Her examination occupied more than
two hours because of hysteria, which
culminated in six fainting spells. She
was finally committed to the Tombs in
default of $1,500 bail.
DEATH^N ELEYATOR
MAY WRECK BOY'S MIND

New York, May 9.Shriek after
shriek, expressive of sudden and over
whelming horror, startled the diners in
the Hotel Victoria just before 7 o'clock
last night. Patrons, clerks, telephone
girls, all who heard, rushed towards
the elevator, peered thru the grills and
saw in the car a man standing stock
still, speechless with fright and con
sternation. In the furthest corner was
huddled the limp body of the elevator
boy. On the floor lay a man stretched
full length, face downward.
The dead man was Charles N. Groves,
a survey agent of the Mechanics' In
surance company, Philadelphia.
F. D. Savage, who was in the lift,
said that as the elevator was carrying
them up Grovees fell forward like a
man seized with a vertigo, so that his
head just touched the wall of the eleva
tor shaft, crushing his life out.
Fitzgibbons, the operator who ran the
car, fainted after the accident, and
when he recovered he acted like a mad
man. It is feared he may go insane.
Two detectives sent to the hotel to
arrest Fitzgibbons encountered Coroner
Shrady, who said he had found Fitz
gibbons in such a state that he believes
his arrest would kill him.

Make Society Productive.
Washington, May 9.Bernard N.
Baker of Baltimore, Md., has been made
permanent chairman of the executive
committee of the Mutual Life Insurance
Company Policyholders' association.
Sixteen committeemen were represented
by proxies.
It was decided to incorporate the as
sociation in the District of Columbia.
The report of Secretary Russell W.
Fish showed that the membership of
the association extends to every state
and territory, to seven Canadian prov
inces, and to several foreign countries.
The question of taking the most ac
tive steps possible to extend the work
of the association thru state organiza
tions was discussed and various commit
tees were appointed.
