GANINE INVESTIGATOR
PATROLS NICOLLET AY.
Some "canine association, amalgama
tion or union is looking into the con
dition of the city under the recent
declaration of martial law for unchan
eroned doefs. Its walking delegate
spent the better part of an hour scout
ing along upper Nicollet today.
Trotting demurely down Seventh
street to Nicollet, the vedette, an lin
dersized black and tan, unlabeled speci
men of polyglot ancestry, peered cau
tiously up and down the otherwise dog
less avenue. Waiting until the police
man at the crossing had turned his back
tho adventurer turned onto Nicollet,
and keeping on the shady side, made
.his way to Fourth street, where. he
sought the seclusion of ah alley.
Later'in the day the intrepid explorer
again ran the gauntlet back to Seventh
where he vanished, presumably to seek
his commanding officer and report. In
the whole hazardous trip he did not
encounter one fellow dog. What re
port he made to his friends will never
be positively known, but it was prob
ably that the anti-dog order was being
stringently enforced and that it would
not be well for any dog to make him
self conspicuous in the downtown dis
trict. *V
The whole demeanor of the dog, as he
made his way up and down the avenue,
indicated that he knew that .he was in
hostile territory. There was good rea
son for his awed demeanor, tor there
was something ominous in the total ab
sence of dogs from the street. The
purp" was evidently one of thos3
sociable little waifs who are always
ready to exchange a wag and?
a wriggle
for a kindly word and look, but in,all
his travels he did not once stop, tho he
did occasionally bestow an appealing
look upon one whom his instinct told
him was a dog-lover.
'NO BILL' FOR WOKAN
WHO KILLED CHILD
Annie Carlson, the woman who re
cently smothered her own child, will
not be tried for murder. The grand
jury has returned a "no bill" in the
"Carlson case, and the woman has been
set at liberty. It was determined by
the inquisitors, after listening to the
evidence, that the woman was entirely
out of her mind when she committed
the LCts
"No bills" were also returned in
the cases against Pearling A. Hall for
alleged assault in the first degree
James Markey, for alleged assault in
the second degree John Moen and Wil
liam Baldwin, charged with larceny in
the first degree Walter. L. Gray,. ac
cused of forgery in the second degree,
and Louis Bishoff, who was said to
have carried concealed weapons.
The jury returned four indictments
and adjourned to meet against next
Monday afternoon when it will return
several more true bills and make its
final report.
GRAHAM HALL SENIORS
.ARE GIVEN DIPLOMAS
Graham Hall graduated a class of
eight with simple but impressive ex
ercises yesterday. After the white
gowned girls, bearing iu their arms
great bunches of marguerites tied with
yellow and white, their class colors, had
filed to their places on the platform,
the assembly joined in singing the
hymn, 'Holy, Holy, Holy.''
A prayer by Rev. J. E. Bushnell,
DID'., began the graduation exercises
proper. This was followed by a duet,
"Ama," by Pinsuti, sung by Miss
Edith Pearc'e and A. S. Kerr. Dr. Jo
seph K. Mason, acting pastor of the
Church of the Redeemer in the absence
of Dr. Marion D. Shutter, delivered the
graduation address, choosing for his
subject, "Work,

REAL ESTATE MEN KICK
Protest Against Aldermen's Action as
to New Plats.
Strong protest has been filed
by the executive committee of the Min
neapolis Real Estate board against a
recent resolution of the aldermen that
streets must be graded before new plats
can be accepted.
The passage of this resolution aroused
the real estate men to the fact that
the aldermen were evidently not ac
quainted with the hardships made un
der* the new system. The protest filed
by the executive committee asks that
the resolution be rescinded.

Best Butter-Scoring Contest Ever Held
by the State,
P. ChristianBon of Olivia won first
place in the first state butter contest of
the season conducted by the dairy and
food commission. His score was 98.
William O. Olson of Hector is second,
score 97%. W. Larson of Seaxles and
Ms P. Mortenson of Cokato tied for
third place, each scoring 97. Christ
Hanson of Hanska came next, score
96 $
The contest is considered the best
ever held by the state. There were 235
sample tubs of .butter submitted, and
only two of the whole lot scored below
