rine, minister of finance in
etheformerly
Newfoundland government, who is
city, says that J. J. Hill of the
Great Northern road is believed to have
his eye on Hamilton inlet on the coast
of Labrador, as a terminus for his pro
posed shortest railroad across North
America.
This inlet runs more than one hun
dred miles into the interior and is navi
gable for the greatest ocean-going ves
sels. The inlet is north of the fog belt
and is only a hop, step and .-jump from
Europe. Navigation is open as long as
it is on the St. Lawrence.
Mr. Morine claims that Mr. Hill
would have to negotiate with the New
foundland government for rights in
that harbor, as he claims the Labrador
coast is under the territorial jurisdic
tion of that colony. He therefore urged
Canada to purchase those rights before
the Labrador ports become valuable by
reason of Mr. Hill's approach or other
wise.

Duluth, Missabe & Northern road has
completed its line into Holman and is
fast pushing toward Bovey, which it
Will enter within the next iew days.
This company is practically the proper
ty of the Oliver Iron Mining company,
which will haul only its own freight.
It will be some months before any ore
is mined at this place, and the chances
are there will be none shipped from
the mines this summer, but next year
will see a big rush.

Sioux City Attorney Finds It Hard to
Serve Two Railroads.

Sioux City, Iowa, June 30. A. F.
Call, for many years attorney for the
Great Northern railroad, and the first
manager of Mr. Perkins in the latter's
campaign for governor, will retire from
the service of James J. Hill on July 1.
One of the reasons for this is that Mr.
Hill does not want the Great Northern
railroad to be in Iowa polities. Another
reason is that the Omaha railroad,
which, since the construction of the
link from Sioux City to Ashland, will
be a competitor of the Great Northern,
doesn 't want the same attorney as the
Great Northern, and Mr. Call is their
counsel here. It was Mr. Call who se
cured a valuable franchise thru Third
street here two years ago for the Great
Northern, without compensation for the
city.

Passenger Traffic Manager of Great
Northern Steps Down.
F. I. "Whitney, whose eighteen years'
service with the Great Northern road
expires today, has sent letters of fare
well to his associates, thanking them
for courtesies and uniform kindness and
wishing them success, health, peace and
competence.
"Under conditions often discourag
ing and disheartening, you have been
prompt and tireless in your devotion to
the interests of the company," writes
Mr. Whitney. "No railway has re
ceived an equal measure of service
from its representatives, and to this
fact is largely due the xapid increase
in the company's passenger revenues,
as shown by the following figures:

there has been a great increase in the
mileage, the Great Northern can take
high rank as a passenger road.
"The rapidity which has character
ized the colonization and settlement of
the vacant lands along the line under
the able management of the general
immigration agent has not been equaled
in the annals of any company. To
'this, all have contributed and share in
the credit that the Great Northern is
no longer a railway without popula
tion.
"Under the guidance of one un
equaled in financial and managerial ca
pacity you have seen the railwav grow
from a local, provincial line into a
great transcontinental system.
"You have at the head of the traf
fic department one who has an abiding
and courageous faith in^ the Great
Northern as a passenger line.
"My successor is known to you. His
ability as a passenger man has been
demonstrated and he merits the same
generous and loyal support as I have
received. From him you can confidently
rely on a 'square deal' neither can
ask for more.''
IOWA LAW SWEEPING
Railroad Men Post Up on Question of
Hawkeye Passes.
Iowa's new anti-pass law goes into
$ effect tomorrow, and twin city railway
men are studying up on its provisions.
The statute provides a penalty for is
suing passes to city, county, district,
state or federal officers, including
.-judges and members of the general as
sombly of Iowa, delegates to any po
litical convention, members and em
ployees of any political committee, can
didates for political offices and jurora
in state or federal courts. The laM
does not apply to notaries public and
persons having an office that pays no
fee or salary.

North-Western Prepares to Take Bet
ter Oare of Hills Business.

Deadwood. S. D., June 30.One of
the best proofs of the increasing traf
flc between the Black Hills and east
era points is the fact that next -week
the Chicago & North-Western railroad
will put on an extra sleeper between
I* Omaha and this city, formerly only
f* one sleeper was run into the Hills, but
'0 of late it has been found that it was
insufficient to accommodate the amount
of travel on the road.
Not only is there an unusual amount
of travel within Nebraska, but towns
of the Black Hills are drawing many
tourists and prospective residents. It
seems, also, that there is plenty of
money in circulation, as more people
are patronizing sleepers than hereto

COMMISSION HEARS COMPLAINT
Reno-Preston Branch of Milwaukee
Given Official Examination.

Caledonia, Minn., June 30. The
state railroad and warehouse commis
sioners met in this village j^esterday to
hear the evidence in relation to travel
ing facilities on this branch of the
Milwaukee.
Mr. Clarkson of Albert Lea, the
petitioner on behalf of the Commercial
Travelers' union, appeared and by
Thomas D. O'Brien of St. Paul as his
attorney, and gave evidence that the
Reno-Preston branch furnished the
poorest accommodations and facilities
for travel of any railroad in his dis
trict. Committees of three from all the
towns on t_e line of road, except Pres
ton, gave evidence as to the inadequate

Stapleton, division superintendent, and
by Attorney F. W. Root of Minneap
olis. Thfi commission took the matter
under advisement.
Burlington Adopts Motor.
The Burlington road has adopted a
turbine direct-connected dynamo for
electric lighting of its limited train.
This takes the place of the system
used and increases the candlepower one
third.
