Speoial to The Journal. Winnipeg, Man., Aug. 8.Mail ad vices from Dawson City tell of the big gest robbery ever recorded in the Yu kon's history, the amount involved be ing $78,000. Gold dust and bars to this value were shipped on the steamer Ida May by the Washington Alaska bank to the Washington TruBt company at Seattle. The mystery is a deep one, not the slightest clue to the thief having been obtained. The theory is that the box was stolen before the ship left Fairbanks and a dummy substituted and watched down the Tanana river by a confederate of tihe thief, who threw away the box upon reaching Fort Gibbon. On the voyage down several passengers re marked on the lightness of the box, and could not believe it contained near ly $80,000 in pure gold. The theft was discovered at Fort Gibbon and a large reward offered by the express company turned every man, woman and child into thief hunters. There was no success, however, beyond the finding of the dummy box in a slough, where it is supposed to have been thrown by_ a confederate for the purpose of making the officials believe the robbery was committed at Fort Gibbon instead of at Fairbanks. ANTI-LID ACT VETOED Attempt at Superior to Obtain an Open Sunday Fails. Superior, Wis., Aug. 8.Last night the common council passed an ordi nance, the reading of which disclosed the omission of the Sunday closing law, leaving the closing of saloons in the hands of the state officials. The new ordinance also takes from the mayor all power to close saloons. For two weeks Sunday has been "dry" in Superior, the East End and South Superior, as the result of a cru sade at a ministerial association and the Civic league. Mayor Linley announced today that he would veto the ordinance. FALCONIO AT DULTJTH Pope's Delegate to the United States Is Guest of McGolrick.
