DEMOCRATIC SPIRIT PREVAILS IN SCANDIA PRIME MINISTER'S DAUGHTER WORKS A S BANE CLERK. Monarchy a Mere Form as Kings Have Scarcely Any Authority Tourists Have Not Tet Spoiled a People or Created an Obnoxious Class of "Tip- hunting" Servants and Officials. Ida Husted Harper, who was one of the American delegates to the great woman's suffrage congress at Copenha gen last month, improved her opportun ity while across the water to visit the Scandinavi an countries. Naturally she found much to intei-est her and she has sent several interesting letters on her observations in the lands of the Northmen. Following is an extra ct from her most lecent letter: I is only in recent years that Ameri can tourists have begun to enjoy the charms of the Scandinavian countries, which for generations have been the playgrounds where the British enjoyed their holidays. Altho the numberless streams of Norway ai fairly crowded with trout, a chance visitor can scarce ly find a place to throw a line, as brooks, rivers and lakes are leased by English sportsmen. These Scandinavi an peoples are a sal ubrious change from those of the rest of continental Europenot yet cor rupted perhaps, by an annual 'horde of sightseers. A present railroad, boat, carnage and hotel rates in Scandinavia are fair, and American spendthrifts haie rot yet raised the prices of native manufactuies. Instances are actually known where a tip has been refused! Ctet Ri of Al Your Pace Troubles in a Few Days' Time With the Wonderful Stuart Calcium Wafers. Trial Package Sent Free. A. ,Stuart Co., 51 Stuart Bldg., Marshall, Mich. fv*w#*x i Monarchical rule in these Scandina vian countries is of the most modified eharacted. Th new king of Norway might as well be one of these royal statues so far as real authori ty is con cerned. Th present king of Denmark mak es many more concessions to the people than did King Christian, whose reign was noted for hbeiality. The general spirit of democracy may be illustrated by the fact that a daugh ter of a pome minister of Sweden is employed in a bank in Stockholm also that a voung woman of good family, but assisting in the salesrooms of the Soi lety ot Swedish Handiwork, was re centh selected to fill the post of lady in waiting to the queen. In olden times women played an im poitant part in the development of the^e Scandinavian countries. Some of the most powerful rulers of Den mark weie queens, and the acts of hero ism performed by titled ladies have ben commemorated in statuary, paint i ng and history. The most commandi ng figure of the Catholic church was St. Bridget, of a noble house, whose influence is said to have extended over all Chiistendom. The first sovereign to unite the three nations into a political union was the Swedish queen, Margaret, in the four teenth centu.y, and history says no masculine mler was able to continue her wo rk after her death. Coeducation everywhere prevails, from the elementary schools to the uni versity. I ancient Upsala a woman doctor of jurisprudence is professor of law. Women are teachers in all the schools and engaged in their own name in all kinds of business. All the professions are open to them, and in Stockholm the women doctors have a large and lucra tno practice. Only a day's journey from Stockholm is Helsingfors, and some of the dele gates to the recent international suff rage convention in Copenhagen had in tended to accept the invitati on to go ovei and see the newly enfranchised women of Finland and the eight or nine of them who have been asked to stand for parliament. Recent occurrences, however, decided most of us to defer our visit until the people had abandoned the habit of shooting and throwing bombs in the street. These things are disconcerting to strangers. A few who didn't mind a little scrap continued the journey and ha\e not been heard from since. Less than another day would have 1 Editorial Section, wwx*Y*'v'vvy WALTER SCOTT DAHL, Famous Norwegian Jurist, Statesan tJ and Author. ft ftifVVV* taken us to St. Peteisbur g. W feel more of a personal interest in the un happy Russian people since meeting the very interesting women who came as delegates to the convention. When we bade them good-by with the hope that we should meet at the congress in Hol land, two years hence, they answered: W shall probably be dead before then." At another time they said: "Oh, how peaceful and contented these people in Denmark seem' I Russia all faces are filled with de spair! Word was sent to them from a high source that if they spoke against the public loan it would be regarded as treason and they would be dealt with when they returned home. Neverth e less, they asked the convention to adopt a resolution against these loans. CELEBRATED JURIST I S DEAD Walter Sco tt Dahl, Who Prosecuted Selmer Ministry, I N More. Walter Scott Dahl, one of the ablest jmists Noiway has ever produced, died at his home in Beigen, a fortnight ago, of cancer, at the age of 67 years. While he had been a member of sev eral storthings and once held a cabinet Eortfoho, it was rather as a jurist that is best remembered. His great ease was, of couise, the impeachment of Premier Selmei, in which he conducted the piosecution was pitted against the redoubtable Johannes BeYgh, who as a moie brilliant speaker and a moie imposing character. Mr Dahl was qiuet and unassuming in manner, but keen and well grounded in the fun damental principles of law. Mr. Dahl was the son of Nils Nilsen Dahl, a clergyman and member of the storthing, and was born at Melhus Feb. 21, 1839. After taking the usual de grees at Christiama university he en teied upon the piactice of law. I 1866 he left the capital and located in Roms dal, where he held various offices and represented that amt at three stor things. was chosen in 1883 to con duct the impeachment proceedings against the Selmer ministry. I 1886 he was sent to the storthing for the fourth term, but this time it as Kristians amt which elected Mm. .Tohan Sverdrup was a great friend of Dahl, and called him to the ministry, where he served a little more than a ye ar Altho his official duties and his law practice naturally made him a very busy man he seemed to find time to write and was a liberal contributor to the press, as well as an author of some distinction. Hi historical works on Einar Tambarskjelver, Bishop Nikolas and Haakon Ladejarl attained consid erable popularity. Moreover, he pub lished several handbooks on municipal law, riparian righ ts and other subjects, which were characterized by a clear and concise presentation of the law In recent years he had led a retired life. Personally, he was one of the most amiable of men, and had a large circle of warm friends. LOST A MONTE CARLO Queen Sophie's Chamberlain Causes Scandal. Count U. Wrangel, chamberlain to Queen Sophie, who recently left Swe den, with the announced intention of locating America, is the subject of considerable space in the newspapers. While some papers handle the matter veiy gingerly, others boldly state that he has lost a goodly portion of the queen's traveling fund in the gambli ng dens of Monte Carlo, the amount being specifically placed at 53,000 kroner. His friends undertook raise the funds and this was agreeable all around. I the meantime, however, Count Wrsni gel had left the country. I was understood that Count Wran gel had been selected as director of the Dramati&ka theater, but this is nj out of the question. Famous Architect Dead. E. C. Christie, the noted t*rehitect who has charge of the woik of restor i ng Trondhiem cathedral, died at Trondhiem on Sept. 14 of heart dis ease. was 74 years old and was a nati ve of Bergen. prepared the plans for the restoration of the cathe dral at Stanager, the cathedral, Maria lurch and Haakonshallen, Bergen, and built manv new churches in the west country. had been engaged*on the Trondhiem cathedral for thirty-four yeais and his achievements have at tracted worldwide attention. Happily for the Norwegian people there is not much left undone and for all this Christie left the most complete plans. Sweden's Bi Fish Hatchery. What is reported to be the largest fish hatchery in the world is in the course of construction in Smaland, Sweden. Seven local agricultural so cities are behind the movement. A morass of about thirty acres has been secured and this tra ct will provide a place for about sixty basins. Th la nd lies so that the expense of dams and other works will be comparatively light. I is planned to propagate not only'fish from Sweden, but spawn will be ob tained from Germany, Hungaiy, Italy and the United 3tates. A expert from Germany will have charge of the hatch ery. Present from Denmar k. King Haakon and Queen Maud of Norway were presented with a numbor of gifts from the Danish people on Sept. 5, the presentation being made at the Bygdoe, where the royal family is spending the summer.
