Social l.lclil.
LEWIS'.?Amofig th" members of our
limited and generally somewhat
mediocre social world, very few possess
a marked personality, an atmosphere
all their own.
I have often watched MAKY LEWIS
In her father'a drawing-room, her high- '
bred physique and bearing, tempered
by a certain unconscious graclousness
to the lesser people. forming a dis
tinct personality and an 'indefinable
atmosphere that for want of u better
name, I describe us charm.
1 watched her very lately in a very
quiet room, a room embowered in ex
quisite flowers. '?olden sunbeams steal
ing' in brought o::t the golden llk'ht of
her abundant hair, and softly illumi
nated her faultless profile The dignity
and serenity that belonged to her
seemed lntensl!l?*d by the deep repose
of her lone sleep.
Charm and distinction were not the
only gifts of Mary Lewis. Possessed
of rich mental endowments, she stood
llrst In nil her studies ?'?* a schoolgirl:
and though enjoying In early woman
hood the admiration and attention that
she naturally attract? I. unlike most
social successes, she gave up society
for the higher life of self-culture and
literary pursuits, as her talents de
veloped with maturity. Travel, then
study and writing became her great
pleasures for years before her death.
Hoping to complete and publish the
results of her labors, she struggled on.
busy with h- r pen till lone after the
commencement of her last illness. When
forced to yield t-i suffering her In
herited heroism rose to endure the long
ordeal of ill health as courageously as
her mt-ntal power had before taxed it
self to finish her writing.
Her one thought in illness was ever
to spare anxiety and apprehension to
the family who idolized her, and her
eyes often smiled when her lips were
silent from pain. On the last night ,
of her life her words were only com
fort and encouragement.
In addition to tlu St. Monica's Mis
sion. to assist aped colored women, for;
which she was largely responsible, and
worked enthusiastically, there were
cares In her life unknown even to her!
friends. A colored girl on crutches, I
whose support she had provided for'
years, was overwhelmed by the- loss of |
' her best friend. She had watched over
this protegee through others to the1
'very end. ^np of her last nets was to
i mj clothing to fhe poor.
Y So kind to the world In life. In death ?
o left her honv in darkness, for the
..resence that hail illuminated their i
lives had left them.
MRS. LANDON It. MASON. ?

FOWLKK8.?Sacred to the memory
of niy beloved husband. FLOYD
FOWIiKKS, who departed this life Feb
ruary 27, 1914.
Thero is no (lock, howover watched and
tended.
But one dead lamb In there!
There l? no fireside, howso'er defended
But him ono vacant chair!
Wo see but dlrnly through the mists
and vapors.
Amid tin-so earthly damps.
What seem to us but sad funeral tapers
May be heaven's distant lamps.
There 1b no doath! What seems so Is
transition.
This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life elyslan.
Whoso portal we cull death.
By his wife. KVA C. KOWLKBS.
