STUDY CHARLOTTE SOIL Chief of Knglneern, Snrgeon-Oencrnl nnd Inapeetor-Oenrrnl Will Mnke Heport. (By Associated Press. 1 WASHINGTON, May 13.?A report on the soil conditions at Camp Greene, Charlotte, N. C.. and upon the possi bilities of using that camp in the fu tute in connection with army training is being prepared by General Black, obiei of engineers: General Gorgas. sur geon-general, and Inspector-General Chamberlain. Secretary P.aker said to day that tho final disposition of this camp would not be determined until ho had received the report from these olTlcers. The three generals accompanied Mr. Baker to Cajnp Greene Sunday, where they made a personal inspection of the site. The greatest obstacle to the re tention of the camp in tho depart ment's training schedule is said to be extremely heavy soil, which, after rainy weather, makes it impossible tc drill largo bodies of troops. Tho con dition also is considered by the army medical authorities to be dangerous to the health of tho men stationed at Camp Greene. Appointed ISrltlgr lOnglnror. The appointment of J. B. George Creel, chairman of the committee on public Information, was denounced in the House to-day by Majority Leader Kitehin as "unworthy the confidence of Congress or any honest man." The statement followed the reading of an excerpt from a speech by Creel in New York. He was quoted as hav ing said, in reply to a question as to whether Congress was loyal at heart, that he did not "care for slumming." and had "not explored Congressmen's h sa rts." Representative Olllett, acting Repub lican leader, called attention to the quotation and asked Kitehin what he thought of it. "If Creel said that," replied Kitehin. "or if he holds any- such opinion, he does not deserve, and is unworthy of the confidence of Congress or of any honest man." Serves h.h Instructor. Edward Gilliam Kvans Meets Death .Wbilo Out Hatliing Alone. STUDENTS SEARCH FOR HOURS Body Is Recovered, but Efforts at Resuscitation Are in Vain?Letters to IIIh Mother, Written Sunday, Tell of Plans for Summer Monti is. Edward Gilliam Evans, of White Deer, Texas, a student at Richmond College, was drowned_yeaterday morn ing at 6:30 o'clock, while bathing alone in the Westhampton lake. Anx iety was felt by his fellow students early yesterday when Evans was found missing' from his room. Kvans was an early riser. Yester day morning he failed to wake, for the first time this session, several of the students who slept on his floor of tho Thomas Hall dormitory. Upon in spection. his room was found empty, his clothing heaped on a chair and his bathing suit gone. The fact that none of the several towels in the closet had been used raised the suspicion of the searchers. ... ,, When he did not present himself at the. Richmond College refectory, Immediate action was taken. It was known that Evans could not. swim at all, and. as quickly as possible, twenty or more of the students donned bath ing suits and endeavored to locate tho body. v At that time, however, It wjs not definitely known whether or not Evans had taken his accustomed dip. There fore, it was deemed best to postpone a systematic search until noon. In the hope that the missing student might arrive on the campus. A group of Bwlmmers persisted In their efforts and. exactly at 11:30. the body was i found by Jajmes Whitfield about ten yards north of the point at which Evans Is supposel to have entered the lake. RESUSCITATION IS ATTEMPTED IN VAIN Practically all of the student bodtf" caw the swimmers raise Evans to the row boat, from which they had been dlvlr.g, and bring the body into shore. With tense faces, they crowded around the r'.Rid figure when It was laid on j the bank of the lake and each one I offered his services. Resuscitating I inea: res were tried, but In vain; I Evans was without a spark of life, j The morning, which was cloudy and I damp, added its^cold to the desolate j scene. Students In bathing suits stood, | shivering from cold and excitement. as the body was taken ashore and the i faculty stood aside with heads un covered. Classss were practically bus pended for the day. Ten minutes alter Evans had been laid on the shore, the sun'came from behind the clouds and looked down on the first tragedy of greater Rich mond College. At this time, the arti ficial respiration measures, which had heen tried were abandoned, the figure was covered with a bathrobe and the onlookers dispersed. Evans met his death when he stepped into a steep depression In the bottom of the lake. -Jot being able to smiw, it is presumed that he lost control of his faculties and died within a few minutes. MSTTEItS TKM. OF PI.ANS l'Olt SUMMER MONTHS Four letters, written on /Sunday night, were found in the dead stu dent's room yesterday morning. They were addressed lo his mother, Mrs. C. E. Evans, White Deer, Texas; his brother. W. ?\\\ Evans, Camp Travis, Texas; Miss Flors E. Maddox, Concord Depot. Virginia, and Mrs. D. P. Minlx, Gladys, Virginia. The communication to his mother was opened by one of the professors before the body was found, in the hope that It might shed light upon the disappearance. Nothing relating to the tragedy was found. On the other hand, the letter was an enthusiastic one. Written by Evans on Mochers* Day, it conlained his plans for .he summer months and referred to the eager anticipation with which he looked forward to the reun | ion with his family. He expected to begin his trip to Texas to-day. A peculiar fact connected with the tragedy is that no water could be forced from the body by the rescuers.
