There is no doubt of some hard fought contests as several of the plumpest purses ha vo been saved for today. Five races are carded. four of which are Hat and one a jumping race. Tho third race, the \ irgima trophy, has the best horses of the mooting competing, and the purse certainly calls tor it. \\ ? ?? Thraves. of Lexington, Ky., a former resident of l'uwlutan County, \ a., who for years lias been an enthusi astic follower of the horse-racing game, and is the owner of a horse entered in yesterday's races, the Virginian, has offered a purse of $1,000 to the winner of this race. Tho fair management also has of fered a trophy which must he won twice by the same owner in order to retain possession. This event is f.-r 3-year-olds and upward and every j horse and Jock r-y will l>e out to capture tho first honors. ScrrPlnry It own l.nitdrd. Much credit is due to James 1*. Koss. of Lexington, sercetary of racing, for the excellent cards lie j has put on. and for obtaining some j of tho best owners in !he country' to run their horses at this meeting. Some of tho best jockeys in the; game are taking mounts hero this year. Hileman, Harrington, Collin?; 1 a.nd Atkinson are all on their way to Cuba to ride this winter. Today is "Kvcrybody's Pay" at th* fair and a big crowd doubtless will turn out to sec tho horses run for the last time. Daily large and en thusiastic crowds have witnessed the events. (irntlnn Took Opener. Grotian, flying the colors of the W. C. Westmoreland stable, carried them home the winner in the first event at the Fair Grounds yester day. The Virginian, a horso whose entrance in the races has been looked forward to eagerly by visitors, came out for his initial performance, but was beaten by half a length. He ran a good race considering the fact that for the past live days ho has been in a car with no exercise. Jte jie.it finished in third position. Five horses were entered in this contest, which was over the five and '??ne-half furlong course. They all kdi away to a nice start, the Vir ginian. with Aubuchon, in tho load. He led the field until the stretch, when Gratian and Repeat started to close up the gap. The three entered the home path on about equal terms. I < ?n the final path Gratian proved himself to be- the stronger, and lornpcd home the winner. The second race on tho card also went to a horse of the W. c. West moreland stable. Pokey Jane, who brought into the treasury of that stable the fat end of the purse. Four horses were entered in the race with Pokey Jane as favorite. All got away to a llying start, and Pokey Jane led nnti! the half, when lCastern Glow be gat: to close in. Kibbler came along in third position, but could not keep i : ite pace of the loaders. (Continued From F.^st Page.) found trouble In getting up yester K,;,vr'ija.y and were left behind " . Crowds I.lhrd Wilson. Jg When Wilson took the air the fiV/Crowd was literally on edge. So :'xnany accounts of tpc narrow escapes experienced by him and ^he other men who have lost their lives for the sake of amusing tho throngs hail been circulated that it was more than Ullc curiosity which prompted the crowds to bend their eyes in tently on every move tho slim, clcan cut young man mado before ho climbed into his plane. Many were the expressions of genuine anxiety that passed about. General Manager \V. C. Saunders had witnessed \\ 11 ! son's work at other fairs, but de clarcd ho would not feci perfectly at ease until this engagement, which lusts until Tuesday. Is safely past without harm to any of the Wilson i party. Wilson's plane was able to attain .only about sixty miles at the time i when ho changed into the second 'machine because the weather wouhlj n??t permit of faster ll.ving at such | 1 dose range. He was about 250 or | I 300 feet in the air and near the west I end of the stands when he made the change. Hoth planes headed away into the northeast, Wilson hanging bv the feet from his. When he re gained his feet he went through many other stunts. Ho was greeted with a roar of applause when he landed, the tensity of the situation having held the crowd more or less spellbound while he was in the air, along with the realization that their applause could hardly reach his ears. Wouldn't Do Hurdle Stunt. Just before his flight ilson was standing with Chief of Police Sherry, l.arry Hovd, of the I'olaek shows, and a party of fair olllcials and newspa per men, watchelng the eighteen-foot leap of an Overland car. driven by It. I". Woollen, of the Harper-Over land Company. As .the car took the hurdle and came down with a thump Wilson turned with a quiet smile to the oth ers and said simply, yet earnestly, and without thought of how odd it might sound to tho cars of those who expected a dare-devil of his type to be uncxclted over anything: "Gee. what If something should give way. I'd he afraid of that sort of a stunt for that reason. 1 guess I am no good at all for a ground man." In a few minutes he was out on the field divested of his natty top coat, giving orders for the hop ofT of his "Jenny" on what might prove to be the last flight We would ever make. A "Jenny" Is the plane name for a Cur tiss plane of the J. N. 4-D type, which Wilson and his men use. They are not so speedy as the army planes at the fair yesterday, but they are adapted for Wilson's work In ideal fashion. :tO,OOft Attended Yesterday. 'Die fair attendance yesterday was probably 30.000. The schools were not closed, but in the evening many fami lies with their youngsters were on hand for the fireworks as there is no school this morning for which to rouse the children early. Today is "llverybody'a Day." The greatest racing card of tho meeting Is to be seen today, which Is the clos ing day of the races. On Monday the army polo match be tween Camp Dee and Fort Mycr will feature the Fair. There Will also be nn officers' steeplechase and an army . mule race for enlisted men. The Fort j Mycr ponies came in last night and I the Camp Deo team will ride their j mounts into the city sometime today I or tomorrow. All departments of the Fair were j active yesterday and judging went on in many of them. Awards are given in another column. Henrico County was awarded first prize among the county exhibits. It ' was second last year. Tho Richmond ?hatnber of Commerce, assisted by a J. A. Childrey. arranged tho prize- : winning Henrico agricultural exhibit.! cash bonus of $2.10 goes with the ?ward. Mecklenburg, I^ouisa. Orange, Hanover. Spotsylvania, Caroline, Prin cess Anne, Chesterfield anil Glouces ter Counties finished in the order na rned. Daily Aviation Talk*. Kvery remaining day of the fair Captain Dawson, of I,angley Field, will talk 1? fore the army recruiting tent on the opportunities now open in the flying service for young men j of mechanical ability. He addressed several hundred youths yesterday, and this talk, with tho circulars scat tcred from airplanes, was productive! of dozens of inquiries at the tent. Many enlistments have resulted frotn this phase of ihe campaign at the, Fair Grounds so far. fioorhlnnd tilrl* Win. While boys from every county of the Strife were putting forth all their efforts to win the awards for the best animals in the livestock exhibits,, the girls of the State were not idle. A bread-making ""contest was staged | between teams from nine counties, with three members apiece. Gooch land County won.
