(?'iviiii; the Farmer Credit BETWEEN Comptroller of the Curreucy Crissinger and Governor Harding, of the Federal Reserve Hoard, there soetns to be growing a unanimity of opinion in re spect to ttio liberal treatment that should be accorded to the farmers in the matter of credit, that did not exist a few months ago. In justice to the comptroller it should l?t- said that if there has been a changing of viewpoint it has not been ,on his part, hut that of Governor Harding. While agreed that farming is basic, and the country's pros p< ritv now depends on sutlicientlv liberal credits to the farmers, they still are far apart as to what effect the "deflation of the currency" policy of the board had on agri culture and ?>?? business generally. Hut. while Mr. Harding, in his testimony before the congressional hearing, upholds the post-war policy of the board and defends it as the savior of agriculture and business generally against the charge that it brought stagna tion and distress, his attitude toward the farmers as expressed in recent addresses and interviews seems strangely new. It is recalled that during the latter part of the Wilson administration a committee of hard pressed farmers called upon Mr. Harding seeking credit relief and heard this from him: "You are here howling for money to enable you to hold your crops and profiteer on the public. You do not deserve any such consideration. You do not do- , serve the money and you are not going to get it." But what a changed Harding it is that now "appeals" to the bankers for a more lihfal policy to the fanners Before the congressional committee he has defended 11.Reserv* Hoard policy as almost pater nalistic in its tenderness for the farmers' welfare, while in a recent interview and in an address at New York he said: \Kri' UlMir> the > . ami f :: 1 -! ? mt nt.u ? .i ?!:> t.'pon its f: liepei.tl th.- Ii\ ~ lb -. ?'tigat.-'Mt .??i.-r In ? ;-;rlfs Au>'.h :.u t it a(T- th* farmers' ? r -? - ? ? :i r> "octed in th' i ii:< ? nufaeturcr.
