HARDING MOVES TO STOP THREATENED COAL STRIKE Vrgrs Minors and Operators to "Keop Faith" I>1o?1?e*,<1 in Contracts. sn;(;r.sTs siv-iioru minimi m A <1 m I n t? Fob. 24.? President Harding lias moved to ward off the threatened coal strike scheduled to Ftart April 1. Taking the position that contracts (should he respected, ho has directed that Secretary of l.ahor l">avIs ask miners an 1 operators to "keep the faith" pledged iii their national agreement, effected to end the 1!*1J? 1920 mine strike. This pact stipu lates: That befnr* the termination of the present Bcrcemont. March .11, the miners and operators acrce to con fer together for formulation of a new wnjo contract. Decline to Confer. Pp to the present time the opera tors have declined to enter into the joint conference, proposed some time acr, by President l.cw is, of the min ers. In taking the initiative and taking it on the very contention of the mine workers ? that the operators were contract-bound to confer with them ? the administration also is ready to Micci st the following chance in the instructions given by the recent min ers" convention to its spokesmen: That, instead of demanding a six hour day and a tive-day week, the miners should seek provision for a minimum of six hours* work a day, as soon as industrial conditions will permit, and a minimum of five days* work a week. It is pointed out by government authorities who have been working on the mine problem, that what the miners need is more a stipulated minimum of work than a stipulated maximum. Some otlicials believe this is what the convention had in mind when it formulated its instruct Ions. but. they add. the pres ent wording is i. h as in be conten tious and destructive, rather than construetive. in working out an in dustrial code. Decision I* Snrprlse. The President's decision came after a careful studv <>f the threat Involved in precipitating economic chaos, not only through a shutdown In the min ing Industry, but through the ad ditional possibility of a railway strike or hampering of coal movements through co-operation between rail road workers and miners. It came as a surprise in view of Secretary Hoover's recent announce ment that a strike seemed inevitable and. that there appeared to be noth ing the trovorutnent could do to stop it In addition, there was the injunc tion of Judge \nderson at Indian apolls, provisions of which appeared to make a conference between miners and operators to effect a new wage scale In contempt of court. As for the latter obstacle, the Pres ident asked Attorney-General 1,'augh erty to prepare an opinion on the point, and Paugherty lield the Ander son decision would not cover fulfill ment of the terms of the miners' con tract. WHY WE SHOULD GO TO CHURCH W10 should go to church because we need the help the church has for us. Our greatest need is of God. The normal man is religious, lie who is not religious is less than a man. Man's chief end is to glorify Clod. When he fails to go to church and to avail himself of the odices of religion he is robbing himself of his greatest need and of his highest privilege. For the same reason that the Sabbath was made for man, that in keeping it holy he might realize the best that is in him, God has commanded us to go to church, that we may fulfill His high plan for us. In the words of Saint Augustine, "Me has made us for Himself; and lie knows that we must ever needs be weary till we find our rest in Him." If we did not go to church we should be apt to forget God. Above all things, we cannot afford to forget llim for our own sakes. In Him we live and move and have our being. We need to go to church to partake of the sacraments. We need the strength that comes to us through the Holy Communion. And we need contin ually to be renewing our vows of consecration to llim. And we need the comfort and inspira tion of meeting our brethren and, together with them, worshipping our Father in Heaven. It Is, therefore, of the utmost value to us that we go up together to the house of the Lord. The world is far too much with us. We need to get up on the mountain with God. Kxpcrlence has proved that there is no substitute for going to church. RIOV. HUGH W. SCllLKTT, Pastor St. John's lOnisconal Church. IIAPTIST. Grace Street Baptist Church PIl. \V. W.
