The petitioner alleges that he has been overcharged by one of the companies, nnd numerous deaths in thi3 city recent ly from asphyxiation ure cited. Examination of the Manhattan rec ords of the Coroner's office showed that In November twenty-five porsons were asphyxiated by gas, in December twenty-three, and in January thirty-eight, making a total of eighty-six for the three months. Coroner Scholer asserts that tho fig ures are almoHt ns high in the other boroughs of Greater New York. The Coroner declares that his experi ence in hospital work formerly showed that persons lying all night In a room partly filled with gas frequently recov ered, but that now the victims almost invariably die after breathing the fumes an hour. As a rule the cases Investigated by the Coroner showed that the victims had gone to sleep with a light burning low; that the pre&surc let up, extinguishing the flames, and then was renewed, caus ing the suffocation of the sleeper. The Coroner is now preparing a report on the subject, which he will hand to the Mayor.
