ACTRESS WELL KNOWN IN SALT

IN THE WAR.
According to some of the "Eastern pa
pers, Blanohc Bates, who appeared hero
a year ago last summer as "Cigarette" in
"Under Two Flags." la going to organize
a corps of trained nurses, whoso services
eho will offer to tho Japanese ln tho war
with Russia. Dr. Nicholas Senn will bo
thc Intermediary. Miss Bates has lived in
Japan and has a warm affection for that
countrv.
NYhen the corps Is equipped no battle
will be started until tho nurses come trip
ping onto tho field, accompanied bv an
orchestra and s(nglng something llko'this:
"Wc do not fear tho shots to hear, '
Nor dread tho fierce campalgnski;
JL'b been our biz to hear the fizz
fAn popping of champagnskl.
"Then como along and hear our song
Mld roaring cannonovltches.
Though torn by shell, we'll mako you well
With ten or twenty Hitches.
"And who are wc? Kind sir, you see,
We aro Blanche Bates's nurses;
So ease your mind, for thCro behind

ARE CiUNTRY GIRLS
RUINE1 IN TOWN?
Salt Laker Makes Some Sensible Ob-
servations Through, the Columns
of the Richfield Reaper.
Editor Reaper: I would beg to have a
short space In your valuable paper. I read
an article In tho last Reaper about tho
downfall of girls who came to Salt Lako
to work as domestics.
In reply I would 3ay that a girl can be
Just as good In Salt Lake as in any other
place. If they are good In thc country
they will also be Rood ln this city, because
no man is going to trouble a girl who car
ries herself wlUi respect
Tho officer who said that servant girls
are called fast women must not havo been
here very long or ho would know better.
Wh2n he says there arc so many more
servant girls going wrong than there aro
clerks and stenographers, I beg to state
that thc rcverso Is tho case. Now. I don't
say there Is no wrong going on In Salt
Lake, because there Is too much of It. But
1 think It is a sluimo to give all thc blane
to tho poor servant girl who Is working
hard for a respectable living.
1 would also say a few words about the
people who havo to hire help. There are
a good many places where they will try
to do what Is right by tho girls If thc lat
ter will only listen to good advice. But
a good manv plrls, when they come here
from tho country, so thoy arc out of their
parents' reach, don't think anyone has
any right to counsel or correct thorn.
Some girls have come to me and said that
they had left thc place they had been
working at. I would ask them why. They'
would answer: "Oh, the old woman won t
let me slay out at night, and I won't stay
ln at night for anybody."
Now, this Is only a few of the servant
girls, because most of them ore tired when
their work Is done and like to stay at
home. But I would say to parents that
if your girls can't take care of them
selves, keep them locked up, because they
aro not safe In tho country towns any
more than they are ln Salt Lako. It
parents would train their girls right, both
in Salt Lako and ln the country, they
wouldn't be led astray so easily.
Don't run tho servant girls down becauso
they have to work hard enough for tho
little they get.
Bv the way, who do you think would
make the besi wife for a poor man a ser
vant girl or a stenographer?

GEORGE J. GOULD
IN MOFFAT LINE
Salt Lake-Denver Road Now Asso
ciated With tho Western Pacific
by Close Watchers.
Thore Is beginning to be the same vague,
indefinite air about tho financing of tho
Moffat road that Is so conspicuous ln tho
older companies operating railroads. When
a banquet was proposed for D.' H. Moffat
several years ago by Denver cltlzcps who
wished to show their appreciation for the
magnificent enterprise ho had undertaken,
ho said It would bo thc part of wisdom to
wait until tho road was built before the
banquet tablo was spread. This sensible
blunt speech served notice upon tho pub
lic that tho road was an Individual enter
prise and that D. II. Moffat would be en
titled to tho banquet when It was finished.
This was several years ago, and recent
ovents have so shaped themselves that
financial circles aro beginning to gossip
about tho Moffat road and say that It Is
too great an enterprise to bo undertaken
by ono man.
A Western railroad official talking In
Now York to a financial reporter of the
Wall Street Journal, Is reported to havo
said that the exigencies of tho railroad
situation In thc West demand that George
Gould secure control not only of thc Mof
fat line, but of thc Western Pacific. If
Gould does not secure control of the Mof
fat line and tho Western Pacific, says the
Western railroad man. Hill, Kurriman and
the Rock Island people will leave him
with a Western railroad system on Mils
hands that has no outlet to thc Pacific
coast and take away the through business.
It is pointed out that D. H. Moffat said
In 1002 that 522.500.000 of Denver, North
western & Pacific bonds were syndicated.
The time since then has seen tho bones
of many syndicates bleaching on the finan
cial sands and It Is given aa a shrowd
Kuess that only a syndicate backed by the
enormously powerful Gould Interests
would stand the test of having capital to
that amount locked up. Thc condition or
tho road. Its SO-pound rails and roadbed
of finest construction. Is taken as another
ovldence that It is not to bo a mere local
line between hero and Salt Lake, but a
great highway of commerce along which
tho Gould tonnage will roll, while the
Denver & Rio Grande, a longer route by
over 100 miles, will be made tho subsi
diary line. The cash outlay of building
the road Is said to bo ovor J-10,000 a mile,
and there will bo 500 miles of track
Tho Western Paclllc will be about 1200
miles long, and this, with tho 500 miles
of Moffat road, will make a great rail
road building enterprise. Thc 17,000 tons
of steel rails that are needed to furnish
these two roads will bo made In Colorado
by tho Colorado Fuel and Iron company.
Ono tunnel of tho Moffat road Is to cost
?2,EOO,000 Thcso stupendous operations
cannot be allowed to go on without there
being plenty of gossip about them In tho
commercial world. It Is hardly conceiva
ble that one man could finance such an
undertaking as the Moffat roud, and tho
light gossip of the street and the more
serious talk of tho money centcrw secma
bent on conveying tho notion that tho
money has como from the hands of tho
Goulds.
All thcso rumors aro persistently denied
by Mr. Moffat, and thcro seems to bo no
indication on his part that he will forcpo
tho right to eat the banquet that ho post
poned until he hod his road completed.
