EAST JORDAN FARMERS IN LINE FOR PROGRESS Tho East Jordan Canal company yes terday followad tho oxamplo of th North Jordan Irrigation company in making unanimous ilu support nnil adoption of tho Utah lake. Government Improvement proposition. There woro 200 stockholders of tho company In at tendance at tho meeting at Sandy, which was presided over by President W. P. Fitzgerald. Tho Government proposition was explalnod by Stato En gineer Doremua and other members of tho general committee who woro pres ent, and the auostion was dlsoussod In all its phoscH, as has been the case at the meetings of tho other companies. As at tho Jordan mootlnjr, a motion making CO second-feot tho amount of water to be demanded from tho Gov- waa reached whereby no more speeohes wort made. PROMOTIONS FOR MANY. Dcpondcnt on the confirmation of Gen. Wood' vero 167 promotionB for other army ofilcers. Those havo been held up olnce the nominations wero made by tho Preeidont, but now will bo confirmed without opposition. They Include twenty Colonels pro moted to be Brigadier-Generals on the retired list, and one Brigadier-General on the active list, and ofilcers ranking from Colonels down to Second-Lieutenants. All theso nominations, as well aa that of Gen, Wood, were sent to the Senate at tho beginning of the speoial eesslon In November, and lapsed when that ses sion olos&d. They wero Bent to tho Sen ate immediately at the beginning of tho regular session. A controversy arose as to whether they wero reappointments, and also whether tho promoted officers woro on titled to the rank and pay of tho grade to which they wero nominated. As all no doubt will bo speedily confirmed, ac cording to military authority they will take rank and pay from tho time they wero first appointed to fill vacancies. GIST OF POLITICAL GOSSIP Tho Utah Stato convention to solect del egates to the national Democratic con vention promises to bo one of tho most oxcltlng of tho campaign. So many things will onter Into It that it Is fair to pordlct that nothing short of a sensational fight will mark tho proceedings of tho day. The Hearst-Brjan Democrats, led by Stato Chairman Frank Cannon, will attempt to set up the pins for tho New Yorker And It 1b conceded that Frank Cannon has a hold on tho organization that will enablo him to put up a great fight. It is said that Judge Powers, while not openly indorsing the nowspaporman. is at heart for Hoarst, and that among hl6 many friends ho Is quietly saying that thoro is a great chanco to elect tho New Yorker. This is regarded as a vory significant mattor, becauso of the Judgo's high standing In Utah political circles. Chairman Mulvoy of tho consolidated city and county committee, too, la classed as a Hearst man, and his influenco will bo brought Into action. Tho Hearat barrel Is 03pocIally attractive to tho crowd. They are given to understand that if Hearst is nominated that ho will put S2.CO0.000 or J3.000.0W into tho slush fund, and If thoro Is any ono thing that Is Interesting to eomo politicians It Is "plenty of stuff." They need it In their business, Thoy can not thrlvo without 1L Thoy must have it, and the candidate whoso leg la the coolest to pull has them to a man. It will bo seen that both tho better ele ment of Domocrats and tho olement that Is not considered ns propagators of Sunday-schools and churches aro on the sldo of tho "all money" candidate. And It Is a strong combination. Tho Hearst organ ization has been especially fortunato In Its ground plans. Bryan, aa tho Kentucky editor has pointed out, Is "all morals." He attracts tho "God and morality" wing of tho party I Hearst Is "all money," and tho others follows fiock to his standard Hlco bees gather around tho bung of a sorghum barrel on tho first warm days of spring time. But In Utah thero is anothor clement to be reckoned with. And It is not to be sneered at. Hearst was the most active of tho opponents of Congressman Roberts. This has been pointed out In this column moro than once, but it is nono tho less In teresting. Elder Roberts 13 up In arms over the attempt of tho friends of Hearst to reward him In Utah. Such a thing would ibo unbearablel No man In tho entire country Is 00 ob noxious as William Randolph Hoarst, the Roberts crowd say. Ho was the king-pin and center-polo of tho organization that fought against seating Mr. Roborts. Ho turned hlo nowspaper guns on the Mor mon politician with such merciless pre cision that thoro was nothing that could resist them. Tho Utahan was bombarded and battered. Ho was pictured by the ed itorial writers as a character wholly un fitted for a seat in Congress. Hearst's cartoonists turned their skill onto him and his wives In a manner that was es pecially annoying The women of tho country were inilnmed and tho Congress had little else to do but toscnd Mr. Rob orts back to his homo In tho mountains. Nor has ho yet forgot! Nor will he! Tho thought that thero is a probablllty that tho Stato honor Hearst with a full delegation Is maddening to tho Roborts wing, nnd thero Is a busy lot of workers In that crowd at this time. Indeed, it Is said that tho rivalry of tho Hearst and tho anti-Hearst Democrats has already be corao so great that thoro Is little likelihood of tho party being able to got togcthor on anything, much less to reach an agrce mont on tho Presidential situation. It was believed that Brlgham 1L Rob erta had deserted the political field for good, and had resolved to employ tho re mainder of hlo days saving souls, etc, otc, until It became evident that Hearst was in fact a candldato for the Presidency. Then tho former Congressman and hla friends began to caucus, and thoy havo done very llttlo else, It Is claimed, since. Tho visit of Tarpcy of California Htirrcd up tho Roberts crowd as It has not been for years, and It Is now reported and gen erally believed that Mr. Roberts will de liver himself of a speech against I-Iearot and Hcarstlsm In tho Democratic Stato convention that will bo worth going miles to hear. Again wo say It Is not a Republican fu neral, and thero is something comforting In tho recollection that It la not, At tho Knulsford today tho Republican commlttco of Salt Lako county will do tormlno tho manner of selecting delegates to tho Stato convention of April 8th. It Is believed that thero will bo much Interest in tho mooting. Republicans aro not so much concerned over tho selection of a delegation to tho national convention of the partv as aro tho local Domocrats. Tho abaenco of thu Interesting features that a sharp content bogotn serves to lessen tho number of can didates for delcgato, and It lo said that thoro aro not a half dozen mon In tho party In tho Stato who aro even Intimating that they dcalro to go to Chicago. But because of tho possibility that thoro may bo a crop of candidates in duo tlmo thero Is no lessanlng of tho efforts of tho organ ization to have matters so shaped that the party In tho Stato may secure tho best possible results from tho work of tho con vention. Thero Is not a llttlo speculation In local political circles over tho political status of C. M. Jackson. It 1b reported that tho Mayor has assured his confederate thai ho lias gono as far towards carrying out his pledge to him as it Is prudent-that his ernmont in exohongo for tho company's primary riuhta was voted down by a largo majbf'lty, and than tho p5po fdtion ot accepting DO docand-foet vrao carrhid unanlmoualy. tFhln aotion loaveo only ono of tho flvo canal companies that has fallod to approvo tho compromieo plan for deal ing with tho GoYernmont aa nfrroed upon by tho gonoral oommlttoo and the t directorates of ail the companieo, the Utah and Salt Lako company having held out for 00 second-Coot of water for ita primary rights Another moot ing of tho stockholders ot this company will now bo called to reconsider thj question, however, and it is not be llovcd that, for tho paltry considera tion Involved, thoy will persist in be ing tho ono factor to Btop tho whools of agricultural progress in Utah and tho Salt Lake valley. party will not lndorso 0. further effort to aeouro for him tho appointment and that Jaokaon has given up tho hopo of landing tho clerkship. Others contend that the nomination will again go boforo tho Coun cil. Tho moro thoughtful ones, bowover, reason that now that tho .Mayor and tho majority of tho Counoilmcn havo come to an agroomcnt and that tho ogroomont has boon corrltd out to the satisfaction of tho Mayor that Mr, Morris will not again at tompt to soouro the confirmation of Ida objoatlonable friend. Thoso say it would clearly mean that Mayor Morris does not Intend to do the decent thing. In this vont ho would bo ueveroly censured. Any way, Jackson now has a Job. Tho Re publican Stato chairman has taken him under his wing and ho is feeling that tola 1b a "suro enough" victory ovor hla op ponents. When considering this featuro the othor day a politician said that tho movement of the Republican Stato chairman in Ap pointing to office tho socrotary of the Democratic committee a man especially oUanelvo to the groat majority of the local Republicans, Is regarded as a mysterious political monouver on tho port of Chair man Anderson which Democrats aro studying with concontratlvo care, Thoy think that tho situation Is loaded. Thoy aro unablo to understand -why Chairman Anderson would tako up Jackson, In foco of tho crltloism ho certainly know would follow, with apparently no othor motivo than to lrrltato his party enemies. Ho must havo had an ax to grind, tho grind ing of whloh, It is argued, will compensate for tho censure. But thero is not a mother's son of tho wholo outfit that will vonturo on a de tailed opinion at tho ohafrman'H full pur pose. Jackson perhaps knows. So docs tho chairman. And, anyway, what's tho use? Thoro Is no ono that will boliovo thai, tho presentation of free supplements for his paper is the only thing that has made Chairman Frank Cannon such n stirring friend of Hearst Some think that on tho occasion of his recent Eastorn trip Mr. Cannon was guaranteed nothing short of the consulship to Dahoiny or Zanzibar. If this is truo thero aro sufficient reasons In this for Utahans to work against tho Now Yorker. Frank Cannon Is a deal too clover a follow to bo normlttcd to commit tho folly of leaving the country whon ho can be such a factor in the work of mag nifying" Utahl Ho Is good material oven If ho is Btcopod in Hcarstlsm and othor brands of latter-day Domocracy, ITover Fades.
