Sentiment Extremely Bullish
Throughout the Day, and
Prices Go Soaring.
CHICAGO, Sept. 20. Wheat for May
delivery soul on tho Board of Trade today
at $1,081, the highest mark for tho sea
son. Other opilons showed corresponding
advances. This sharp upturn was caused
by sensational reports of damage by
weather to the crop of western Canada.
At tho close, tho December delivery was
lQifT'lJc higher. Corn was up JJ?3c- Oats
were lgc higher and provisions 10c to 20c
higher.
Sontiment In the wheat pit was ex
tremely bullish all day and the volume of
trade was large. The opening quotations
on the leading options were 5c to iH2c
higher than the close of yesterday. The
reason for the opening strength was an
advance of almost 2c In the price of wheat
at Liverpool, because of crop damage re
ports from Canada and greatly decreased
shipments from Argentina.
The local market was further strength
ened by a dispatch from Winnipeg which
said. "The last of this crop goes down
and out tonight; killing frosts being pre
dicted everywhere." This message caused
a stampede among shorts throughout al
most regardless of price. The report that
100 boatloads of wheat had been taken
for export at New York also strengthened
tho market. Part of the gain was lost
on heavy realizing, but tho market closed
strong. Clearances of wheat and flour
were equal to 220.000 bushels. Primary re
ceipts were 300,000 bushels, against 1.014.
000 bushels on the same day last year.
Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago reported
receipts of 600 cars, against 400 last week
and 700 a year ago December wheat
opened Be to 11c higher at $1,003 to $1011.
sold between $1.00 and $1,028 and closed
at $1.0051.02. May sold between ?1.06I
and l.OSs and closed at $L07.
The corn market followed closely the
pace set by wheat, final quotations on
the leading options. showing gains of from
g53o to 2c. The close was strong. De
cember opened l'.c to ltUc higher
at 571c to 5Sic, sold up to 59ic and closed
at 5S8c.
Oats were strong, In sympathy with
wheat and corn, but were less active. De
cember opened 2c to ;c higher at 531c,
held within the opening range all day and
closed at 53ic.
Provisions were strengthened by the
sharp advance of corn. January pork was
especially strong. At the close January
pork was up 20c at $15.27; lard was 10c
higher at $S.G5rtiS.67i, and ribs were 12ic
fU5c higher at $7.95.
