I As to "Peter Pan'9 I No more striking evidence that Hie heart of Lite American theater-goer is Eound, ami that he will not only ehoose, but liberally patronize the. best when the best is offered, could be dc ircd than the fine success of .1. M. liarric's "Peter Pan," says the "Wash ington Herald. The combination of "Peter Pan" and Miss M"ande Adams Forved to keep the theater crowded, and almost as beautiful as the play it was to watch I he happy faces of the many children who were taken to tho theater to sec brought to life thoso dreams of child-world of which increas ing years and experience of work-a-day lite are unable, entirely, to rob any ol us. Right from the nursery, Ground ' which so many helpful and blessed memories cluster, comes the grim old pirate vessel which Peter Pan and i the children capture from Cnpt Hook and his merry men iu hand-to-hand combat. "AVho are you, Pan?;' cries the bold pirate capta'in as they fight. Tho mimic swords clash together as Peter Pan, an exultant note in his j fresh young voice, erics. "I am youth, eternal youth. Abont every Jaw of" dra matic construction is violated; the conventions of the stage are disre garded; the piece iB original; a law unto itself. It bears about the same relation to the conventional stage story as Walt "Whitman's poetry docs to the highly polished sonnets of Sir Phillip Siducv. but in its own way "Peter Pan' is perfect. The play appeals to the ideals that are in every human heart. It recalls to all who see it the memories of the happiest periods of life; the time be fore contact with the world had dulled the Oner sense; when a ready belief in goodness and virtue- was not only pos sible, but instinctive. The time of times when hands that we shall never clasp again were held out to guide us; when lips that, nevermore shall speak to us made vibrant music of love and sympathy; when qyes.. now closed for ever, shone on our souls with a light as from heaven. "The days that are no more"; it is with their voice that Peter Pan speaks to us; the days of lost youth and hope and joy. They speak often of this beautiful play of Barrio's as if it were -written for" children; but its appeal is equally as strong to the children of a larger growth. Jlo must be insensible, in deed, who can not, as tho beautiful fantasy of youth is worked out bofore him. shake off for a lime the sordid anxieties and perplexities of middle age. and find hiriiS&lf dreaming, and hoping, and trusting, with a child's faith and confidence. Life can destroy most of our il Iik-i'akc oliiflnr inntiT nf ny zioeHnc in I the air, chill some of our dearest and best beliefs but as one follows the fortunes of Peter Pan and the Children, of Wendy, tho little mother, I and John, tho dark-eyed, and little Michael of the golden "hair, he comes to sec with clearer vision that the ter rors and delights of childhood, the dreams, the castles, the hopes, tho fears, were very real, indeed. Of course there wero Indians and fairies and pirates; and in some of these far off dreams each innocent Child-heart has set off on tho perilous journey to the Never Never Land. Grizzled hair and crabbed ago in ay try with all the might of its materialism to re sist, but as- it sits through Peter Pan it comes to know and believe in Tinker Bell, the fairy that was only a flash ' of light, and whose voice was onK the sound of bells, so that onl3' those ' who really believe arc privileged to understand. Wh', it's not nearly so hard io believe in Tinker Bell as it is . in wireless telegraphy. It would be hard to determine how much of the bcautj- of "Peter Pan", is Mr. Barrio's and how much belongs . to Miss Maude Adams. Tndccd, Miss i Adams is a great "artist, and un- ' doubtcdly much of the illusion is due 1 to the line spirit in which she plays the part of this youth who will not , grow up. Miss Adams's power over ( her audience is finely shown in thnt , passage of tho plav whore the pirates , iiavo driven the Indians away and Hook has poisoned Tinker Bell. When , Peter Pan gets back, poor Tinker , j Bell's light is ver faint, and it is growing dimmer. How unreal and , i fantastic tho idea is! And yet, Miss ( I Adams, with a heart-rending note in , her voice, turns from the fading light I and cries that Tinker Bell is dying; 1 i that he will surely die unless those in ( j the audience reallv believe in fairies. She runs to tho footlights and 1 stretches out her arms: 1 "Oh. won't you believe in fairies?" she cries. "li you do reallv believe I won 't you wave yonr handkerchiefs j for a sign? If you believe, clap your ' hands." And tho appeal never fails. I Of course the children clap because they do really believe, God bless ! them, but tho oldsters clap, loo, and stamp their feet to make it sure, and 'as Tinker Bell's light comes back and ; Peter Pan cries out that she is saved I aud runs off to rescue the boys from the pirates, it is not only the children and their happy laughter that j testifies to Miss Adams's power; it ' is the old heads nodded wisely in per fect satisfaction, and the foolish, but happy, tear that is furtively wiped from dim eyes behind the spectacle. Ah, it was good to have boon a boy again, jnst for an hour! Good for the soul and heart to have been permitted, through such perfect art aud acting, to travel baclt upon the trail which we thought was lost forever, the trail that leads to tho Never Never Land the land of motherhood and 303 and clean I liness and ecstasy.
