I S WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. TV. J. Bryan held an impromptu rcccptiou in the rooms of the House Committee on ."Wbj's and Means, where a number o Deraocraticc Representatives and many outsiders chatted with him. Asked by somo ono to name his choico for a running mate, in the event of his nomi nation at Denver, Mr. Bryan laughing J' replied: "I shan't tell. That is too bold a -question." To the newspaper men ho said: "You may say that my coming to "Washington to consult any men or set of men as to whether or not I ought to be a candidate for the nomination. I have not put that ques tion to any men, nor shall I. The peo ple, not individuals, have the sole right to decide that point. 1 am not here to solicit support for myself as a pos sible presidential candidate, I never solicit individual support. I never ask any man to vote for me. "In tho past, when I was before tho peoplo as a candidate, my efforts to obtain votes have been confined to statements of my views." Denies Absurd Story. Asked about the story published in somo quarters that former Senator Jones, Oliver P. Belmont and others came to him a day or so ago and told Mm he was not the logical candidate for tho Democratic nomination, urged "him not to run, and promised to op pose him if their advice should be dis regarded, Mr. Br3ran said: "There is not a shred of truth in that story. No one has advised me not to bo a candidate. I saw Senator Jones and wo did talk politics, but nothing of tho sort reported occurred. I have as yet had no 'formal confer once' since my arrival in Washington. Tonight at a dinner at the home of Senator Newlands of Nevada I shall meet and confer with the first one-half of the Democratic Senators on the alphabetical list. Tho Oklahoma Statute permits National banks to take ad vantage of tho Slate law, and a Na tional law should permit Stato banks to come under the provisions of that law in States which have no guaranty system. Must Have Elastic Currency. ''As to an elastic currency, I think provision could bo made for sufficient elasticity in times of emergency by a law providing for the issuo of United States notes, such notes to be loaned by the Government to the banks upon adequate secunt3 and at a rate of in terest which would compel the retire ment of the notes when the emergency is over. I supposo nearly all merhber? of Congress and Senators favor some provision for an emergency currency. The .Democrats, as a rule, favor a system under which the Government will issuo and control tho value of 'emergency currency, -while most Repub licans favor Home system under which it would bo issued and controlled by the banks. This presents the point in dispute betwocu the two parties. The high financiers have been largely re sponsible for tho present panic by reason of their reckless methods; and I am satisfied that a majority of tho people would prefer to risk the Gov ernment rather than risk these men. Somcbod' must decido upon the needs of the people, and so far as I am con cerned. I prefor that the concessions be with the public officers responsible to the public, rather than with private individuals who would be guided by their own interests, instead of tho in terests of the House.' 1 .i,.I.,H.,l.;.;ll;,;l,;,;,,;,.:..;.W Salt Lake Statistics ? iT..T..,..r..;..:..T-Mr..r!-T-;"!"i":"t"!"T..T2t. The street railw.ny systems of tho District of Columbia and the financial question occupied the time of the JIouso of Jiepresentatives toda3r. The latter sub ject was discussed by Mr. Fowler, chairman of tho Commltteo on Banking and Currency, in an exhaustive speech, in which he opposed bond-secured cur rency and the proposition looking to the "establishment of a ventral bank. Mr. Fowler used for his text- tin bill introduced by him early in the present mouth, providing, among other things, for bank redemption districts, which, lie argued, would meet National emergencies.
