Marelda Frandcson and her 4-month5-old bnbj', victim o Suhdaj-'a wreck on the Ore gon Short Line at Lay ton, being taken to Brigham City or burial, and Mr?. W. M. Young and her two children I slowly rccoverinc from their in.iurios at tho Latter-day Saints hospital here, there has come to light a story of hero ism that is probably the most striking feature o the catastrophe. Running frantically toward the out fit car in which his wife and babies wero sitting. Engineer Young of tho steam shovel outfit Sunday morning saw the engine of freight, train No. 56 crash into the rear of the work traiu and ihe nest instant, to his horror, the far containing hip wife and children rose high in the air, striking square on top of the cook car of the train, and, with n trmfic crunch and spliutcrinc of timbers crash to a. shapeless mass in the very center of, iho wreck. Blinded by the smoke and dirt that rose in a cloud. Young stumbled on toward the wrecked ears. The smoke forced him back once, but he turned and went on again. Baby in naming .Car. lie reached the smashed cooking and outfit carp. His wife and oldest child lay stunned a. few feet from the debris. The roof of tho car in which thev were caught by tho collision had fallou in until afc tho lower end of the car the aperture between the floor and roof would scared admit, a man's body. The heating stovn in tho, car had overturned and set fire to the interior, and from the smoke and flames tliat filled the car Young heard the cries of his youngest baby. A glance showed him that his wife and other child were being cared for and franlic witli fenr for the safety of the baby imprisoned in the burning car Young' tried to crawl through the opening at the end. Smoke and flames drove him back. Tie stewed a pail lying beside the car and attempted to scoop up n bucket of water from a ditch. Tho bottom of the pail gave way. A car length away lay a big dishpan. young seized it and was back at the car throwing wator from tho diteli on ihe flames wlneh shut him off from his baby. As t ho .jiro died down he crawled through the opening at the end of the cur and up into the smoko-fiUed interior, guided by the cries of the child, until his hands touched the little human mass. With the baby in his arms he slid back to the opening and a moment later was with bis wife and oldest ,child. Almost a Miracle. The escape of 3rs.. Young nnd her children from death was almost mirac ulous. They wore in a car which was closer to the caboose of tho work train bv two car lengths than, the car in which Mrs. Fraudeson and her baby wore killed. Only three ears inter vened between them and the rear of the train, the car next behind being that containing forty head of cattle. Ahead of tho car occupied by the Youngs, with two outfit cars interven ing, Avas the car in which Mrs. Frandc son met her death. Enginorr Young had left his wife and children in their car when the train stopped at- Laytou to go forward four car leugths to Ihe hut. box on the crane car, the incident that eauscil tho delay at Lnyton. had taken a pail and gono across the street on the left side of the track to get water to use on the box when I heard train No. 56 whistlo as she bowled around the curve above tho sta tion," he declares. "Quinn, conductor of our train, and his brakenicu Imd been nervously dis cussing the possible approach of No. 56 an t hoy examined the' hot box in an effort to determine bow long thoy would have to lay up. The whistle of No. 50 sounded .just as I returned wilh I the water. " 'There she is whistling in, boys,' T cried as L heard the blast. Quinn ' seized a flag and ran up the track. T j was afraid something was wrong, though we couldu't soe the other train on account of the curve. .1 started to run back to the car containing my familv. Beaten by Train. "L hadn't made hnlf a car lcngttr when No. 5G took tho curve, coming apparently at full Hpeed. I waved my arms, signaling the engineer of the train to shut her off. T do not believe tho engineer was on his engine after it rounded the curve. 1 looked for the faco of either the engineer of his fire man at the cab windows and I am posi tive T saw neither as the cngino rushed toward our train. I could hear .the screech of the emergency brakes as they gripped the wheels, out the head way o tup train was too great, and I do not believe its speed wns slackened a partjelo when jt struck our caboose, j ifI was wsfohirrg the car containing my wife nnd Children, and I don't know how thaf engine got through the cars intervening between it and our car.. Tt seemed but an instant, how ever, when I saw the car containing i my family hurled high in the air. iWUi- ' out turning it lit square on top'of the 'cook car, which was npxt in front of it. J The two collapsed in one mass, and 1 1 shut my eyes to the sight. I believed I my wife and children were all killed. I "They had absolutely no warning of i ihe collision, T found, out afterward. My wife was sitting by a little stove wo had set up in the car, and one of tho children was on the floor near her, the other being further toward the end of tho car, 'When the car was thrown into the 1 air the stove vas overturned on tbe child near it. My wife seized the top of the stove "and hurled it back from the baby. Her bands were severely ourned". That is 'about ail she remerri n2rs of the. collision. Late Monday afternoon .EEngincer Young was found in the railroad yards of the Oregon Short Lino standing ho side the train which at 1 o'clock carried the bodies of Mrs. Frandcson and her baby to Brigham City, where the funeral will be held. Mrs. Frandc son was formerly Miss Marolda Chris tensen of that place, where her pn rents and relatives now live. The bereaved husband accompanied tho bodies.. He was tho first to reach his wife and babv as they lay unconscious, thirtv feet from tho wreck, whero they had boon hurled by the shock of the co'l lission. Ho carried his wife lo a near by house, while members of the train crew brought his bab3". A complete investigation of the cause of the wreck will be made Tues day. Late Monday afternoon it was. de cided by Superintcndenl. Stevenson of the Utah division of the Oregon Short Liue to examine several of the train men. .S. L. Quinn, conductor of tho combination freight and work train, and his two brakemen. E. J. Chandler and C. E. Mnllin, were called in, with .1. J. Mullancy, conductor of tho rear freight, and Brakemen J. A. Chat tcrton nnd William Kirkwood. At 7 o'clock Monday night very little in formation could be obtained at Superin tendent Stevensou's ofllce as to the result of the examination of these men. It was stated that Conductor Quiuu claimed to have been at Layton less than ten niiuutos lOhen he started back with a flag to stop traiu No. 2S. The rosult of tho investigation de pends principally uow on the story Oscar Burg, engineer of the roar freight, will tell. Mr, Burg was quite seriously injured in jumping from his engine, "but will probably be able lo appear before Superintendent Steven son Tuesday and tell his story.
