H j 2 TPIE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY MORNING-, FEBRUARY 28, 1909, I 91 CAPPER HAS I SREATJRA AHEAD President MacFarlanc Writes Report Giving Detail of the Properly. H MILL IS DESCRIBED, AS WELL AS THE MINE H Deeper Work Shows That Cop- per Values Get Belter H With Depth. James M'acFarlano, president of tho Ohio Copper company, has written a re port of the Ohio copper property and null of Bingham for the Mining World of Chicago, which is of special in 1 rest nt this time in Utah. This rc--pert coos into minute detail rclativo to the resources, and such portion of tho tame is here reproduced: fl The development work so far done on H tho Ohio consists of two tunnel levels driven northerly from tho canyon, at riift'ercnt altitudes, intersecting tho oro fl lodv. From tho lower of these tunnels. lalkd the Cunningham, or 100-foot 1 c't an inclined shaft was sunk fol lowing the hancinir-wall vein, and from ilns shaft two other lovels, the 400-fopt ;ind ."5iO-f oot, were driven on this vein i- a distance of 300 and 400 feet vcr-ticr-l'v below tho 300-foot lavol. lao ( nuninsrham is at this time the main workincr level of tho mine, and on the 'evel drifts have been extended rastv nrd a distance of S00 feci, on both fonf and hanging-wall veins, and west war! ?n foet, to tho limit of the prop crty. Numerous lateral drifts between and crosscuts have been driven, divid inr the ground into blocks of approx inntcly 100 feet square. From tho cor-icr- of these blocks raises will be made and sublevcls driven 25 feet apart, with a view toward mininc the ground by the cnvng system. Already thcro has been driven on the Cunningham tunnel level 2020 feet of drifts aud crosscuts, c"tiTolv in ore. and this, together with iT'i feer of raises and J000 feet of sub 1" o's above, has b'ocked out and made rrndv for immediate extraction in an r "v orr.ical manner an immonso tonnage ct 'onenl rating ore above this level. No work was done between the Cun i i ant tunnel level and the 300-foot i r On the 400-fnot level, about 700 r?" drifts and crosscuts, entirely in 0 ' ! vp been driven with the samo t -ie object in view. The o00-foot 1 i' being the dewiest and most in 4 - -ct "ir. because of what ir might i. ' mi showing the continuity of ore ,.- V;)lh. ui5 also been the scene of (-.n-.;to development work. Alto; i Mlrr. on thi level there is a total of : IT 1 i- t of drifting and crosscu'.ting, cn! f lv in ore. and So2 feet of" raises co- rr-ctine with tho 400-foot level p'rnr. It is unnecessary to describe f ip-.p workings in detail, the plan pur ci d being that of laving the oro out n- nearlv regular blocks as possible and rerdering the snmo available for ccroieal mining. It is a fact worthy (p rr.'e that the ore-bearing territory H' devrVred ou .the iJOO-foot lovel is ::rosxr in extent, and that tho char Maintained the standard of that devcl oncd above, but has increased very per upiblv. Tlie work of development now in progress embraces the sinking of an in ened shaft of two compartments, with Hj an 'nclination of fifty degrees. This shaft, starting near the footwall of the ore. is being pushed as fast as possible to a connection with the Mascottc tun rrl. J0OO feet vertically below the stir- j face. Raising from the Mascotte tun nrl. ard sinking in the shaft, above, go ig ou at the same time, there is about 4i0 feet on the inclination of the shaft to be driven to complete the con-i"-etion. The rascotte tunnel is also being driven westward beyond tho bot- fl torn of the Ohio shaft, and the breast :s row 200 feet beyond the shaft: From a point in the tunnel west of tho Ohio sh.ift. a crosscut north will soon be .started to intersect the ore body at this level, and from which upraises in the ore will be made to the levels above, and through which ore will be drawn o stiprilv tlie mill: On account of the ore bod1' huviug a flatter din than the irclination of th' shaft, it is expected to tak: about 200 feet of crosscut ting to ;et into the ore body from the Mns rotte tunnel, as extended bevond the Ohio shaft . and about 400 feet more in le ore body to Teach tho Alls AVell in forming the hanging wall. A concentrating mill of steel and con c -jo construction with :i capacitv of 2 'n0 tons per dav has been erected about tlirce-foiirtli? of a mile east of t'-o nortal of the Mascotie tumiel. and all lut remains to be' done at this time the setting up of the machinery be f re nutting the plant into commission. A"l fie nlans for this plant have been in' do vith a view to its enlargement ',o dr nble tlie eanaeitv as fooii as the tortion now nearing comnletion has liren started up. The first half of the rr'H. when readv to commence opera lions, will have cost about $1,250,000. Tie main building. 317x801 feet, is of st -ne turn l teel eonstmctiou throughout, civ rd with eornigafed iron ov-er a Fc"ting of thick asbestos paper and retting, making it practically fire liior.f. All table floors arc of concrete rstin" on tlx bed rock foundation. All rt'iin'n'r walls nro of concrete, also all fotitd:t;ons fur tables and Chilian mills. ' u !ime plant. 115x342 feet, is also rr Mc-f-l eonstmctiou similar to the iniu building. The mill is being n lipped with strictlv up-to-date ma B c iiKrv. consisting of two 24x10 .iaw fi iie'-s. four 20x(i jaw crushers, six t n 7 foot Chilian mills and 3S2 W31 fi n tables. All machinery is of the bitest and most approved design. a d is calculated to bring the cost of oi oration and maintenance down to the Hj r iiiirniun. Ample fire protection has 1 I f en provided, each building being sur i iimded bv fire pipe lines with the 1 iipcossary hvdrants. AbotM 14S0 acres of ground has been p.rcT:asd here covering the mill site nj'd tailings ground and insuring a last in? supply of dump room. Railroad con i' v-t Ions have been made with tho Rio G-audo "Western railway at Lark at a c, t of about $25,000. Experiments carried out in an old le.ised mill in Bingham canyon, extend i' z through a period of two voars. on 1 the ores extracted from the mine dur H iig development, .showed that a recovery H of Si per cent of the gross contents of 1 . tl e ores could be oflfectcd. On Saturday tho Orogon Short Lino company mndo tho announcement that on next April 3 a new rate will ro into effect on ores shipped from tho Gold field aud Tonopah mining camps to Salt Lake smelters, the rato touching ores of a certain grade only. Rock ranging from $20 to $(i0 will bo enrried for $1 per ton less than tho present rato, whilo ores ranging from $70 to $100 per ton will bo transported for fifty cents less per ton than tho present schedule. . . . Tho purpose of this reduction, it is stated, is to encourago tho develop ment of properties, and the shipments of ores that are now ready for tho mar ket. It roniains to bo seen, however, whether the reduction is generous enough to stimulate oro shipments, for tho Nevada minor has about come to tho conclusion that on tho lower grado of ores it is cheaper to mill bis rock rather than ship it to tho emollcrs. Local circles bono that this reduction will encourago shipments lo Salt Lako valley smelters, as no small quantity of such ores have been sent to tho Solby plant in preference to Utah. Tho oro is entirely free quartz and containing no clay or other muddy sub stance interfering with clean concentra tion insures a high percentage of re covery. The average value of the ore now developed and in sight in the mine is 1.000 per cent copper. 0.00.r ounce gold, and .05 ounce silver. Tho cop per value on the 100-foot level aver ages J.4SS per cent, whereas tho aver age value of the 500-foot level is 1.707 per cent, thus showing a marked increase in value as depth is attained, and tho gold aud silver value remaining tho same. In all some S95 samples enter into tho i average of 1.48S per cent copper found I for tho Cunningham tunnel level: 527 samples into the average of 1.500 per cent cooper found for tho 400-foot level, and 7SG samples into the average of 1.707 per cent copper found for the I 500-foot level. Tn calculating the tonnage of ore ex posed', the areas of ore-bearing territory as only absolutely aud actually -'Tlo-veloped by workings on the various lev els, were measured, and entered into the immense tonnage of lfl.500,000 tons, which something over 10,000 feel; of openings have placed in sight above the main transportation (Mascotfc) tun nel level. Careful. observations of costs and re sults attained in employing the caving system of mining, have led lo its adop tion covering the future mining opera tions of the Ohio. An estimated coat of mining ydaced at 70 cents per ton has been concluded to be a safe figure, with operations of tho magnitudo pro nosed. It is claimed underground min ing of this character is being con ducted today in the adjacent Utah propcrtv at a total of 4(5 cents per tou. Tho cost of hauling between ore chutes in the mine and tho bins at the concentrator, through tho Mascotte tunnel, will be 15 cents per ton, and tho cost of milling is estimated at 50 cents per ton. which is very conserva tive, as undoubtedly lower operating costs will be reached. I EXPERT EXPECTED AT THE CMAOO Ml Knowing Ones Believe Mine Will Be Examined During the Week. Local circles who aro closo to the matter of tho Colorado option aro of tho opinion that tho second logical step in this transaction will occur during tho new week, namely, that an exam ination of tho mino will bo mado in tho interests of tho organization before whom tho option was placed in New York last week. This organization, it is thought, is none, other than the In ternational Smelting aud Kenning corn pan v. and the fact that an examination of 'tho property is scheduled for tho week is tnkon hero as rather conclusivo that theso interests nro willing to at loost investigate tho proposition. Nothing will bo more important than tho result of this expert inspection of tho Colorado mine. It is hoped that the amount of ores determined jn tho proporty will bo learned, for it. has boon a "matter of much speculation for over a 3'oar just how many millions of dollars' worth of oro tho Colorado man; agomont had demonstrated. Somo of the estimated figures during .this period havo run to, tho cxtrcmo, but few if any estimates have gono below tho present selling value of tho stock. Min ing engineers havo agreed, on the con trary, that thcro were more valuable resources in the oro body than the buying public npprociated. it is not an easy matter to measure, the Colorado body. Those who havo visited the mine lately stato that much must bo loft to estimate, but all who havo indulged in this practice have been impressed. Tho examination nat urally will deal only with the. ore body which began in the Beck Tunnel and which ends as far as the present time is concerned in the Tron Blossom. It will be interesting to know whether or not unbiased experts will expert much from this proporty at a greater depth than the present big ore body. Should tho International company be tho powor behind this inspection, it is likely that the call on all of tho Knight ores "for tho next ton years will be no small consideration in the deal as a whole. It has not been learned yet into whoso hands will be intrusted this examination, but all Tintic is keeping a weather eye on tho premises to find out. New York Mining Stocks. James A. W. CURR1E, ASSAYER, 70 W. 3rd So., Salt Lake City. JESSUP THE COMING CAMP DF NEVADA George AVood Says District Has All Earmarks of Produc ing Camp. "Thcro is a mining camp in Nevada which Salt Lako papers never men tion, but which has tho material for ono of the biggest and most interesting j gold-producing points of tho Sagobrush Stato," said Gcorgo Wood, tho well known Nevada operator to The Trib une on Saturday. "This camp is known to bo n limitel world aa .Tessup. but it will bo widely known before the sum mer of 11)01) has turned into fall. ".Ies8up is located thirty-two miles west of Lovelock, and that is why Love lock knows more about it than tho ordi nary town of Novada. Lovelock, how over, is not tho nearest railroad point, lluxloj- has that distinction, nnd Hux ley is only seven miles distnnt from Jossiip. Tin's npsurcs an easy and eco nomical haul for ores and supplies, and theso two items aro going to be a fac tor at .Tessup this year. "The camp already has produced ore. tho Mackedon and Taylor nroporty having mndo a shipment rocontly which netted tho owners $K17 gold per ton. I havo fceu rock from ,Io59up that shows every essential for causing a boom there when tho timo is ripe. The Mack, Katcliff and Loose group is another fine looking proposition. The Hopkins property is owned and operated bv Now York interests, while tho .Tonoph Macke don group, ownod by Michigan inter ests, is looking very promising now. Tho P. .7. Haines property has been pounded to a depth of ninety foot, and tho operators havo opened a very fine quartz ledgo showing free gold. ".Tessup was discovered a year ago. and it now contains four hundred peo ple, hotels, saloons and all lines of busi ness enterprises arc represented. The proport' owners have done very little mcorporatig of companies. Thoy say if thero is anything thcro they might as well got it themselves as to allow it to leak out into tho pockets of oth ers. But some of theso days a big find of rich rock will bo made, and then 3'ou will sco another rush such as No vada has been famed for during the past five or six years." HURRYING THE RAILROAD TO INTERNATIONAL PLANT K. P. Mathcwson, manager of tho In ternational Smelting aud Refining com pnny, save that they will begin laying rrnek lor the new lino to the proposed smelting plant at once. There has been three miles- of the road graded and the lies laid. The rails arc on the ground nl will be laid as fast as the balance of tho load can bo graded, and tho en tire six and one-half miles between the plant and tho Salt Lako route will bo madi -fady for hauling trains by May 1. Mr. M'atnewson says that the com pany proposes to make Tooele City a modern town. It has alrendy headed off a couple of townsite companies and proposes to sec that every building erected is a substantial affair. It is not going to allow any shacks built and every residence will be a comfortable hftme for working men and their families. New York Bond List. Jnmcs A.
