1 20 THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 28, 1909. 5 I, TAKES OUTING IN TEXASl 3 I. AXTOXIO, Tex., Feb. 27. "A-h, this is a big improvement on ; the skyscrapers," said E. H. Harriman, Tvho Tvields the greatest power of any living man in the matter of railroad control, as he seated himself in a com fortable rocker in one of his tents at the camp which he has established in j a beautiiul spot on the outskirts of San Antonio. "I like living out of doors," he con tinued, ''but of recent yeaTS I have not had much opportunity for this sort of thing. I have lived in a tent before this and I enjoyed it very much. It is certainly a relief from the ek'scrapers. Here one can get close to nature and it is restful to me. I felt better with in an hour after I struck camp. The very atmosphere of the country puts new life in one. I am just drifting around trying to build myself up phy sically and I am unable to say how long I wiU remain here. I expect to live ill the time in the tents during my itay, and will attend only to such busi ness as is urgent. Do you know that all this talk about me being overworked is a mistake?" continued Mr. Earn-! man. "I don't work hard. I am not tired by the work I do. I simply need a change and I came hera is get it." Mr. Harriman iz accompanied by his daughter, Miss IvIry, ".nd sfro csjeys life in camp fully & mn:h as, 1. ?? fath- er. Tho tents which are occupied by tho ilnrriman party aro four in nam- ber. They are situated in a crovo of ( statel pecan trees upon a slight emi- ' nence which affords a clear chance for tho sun to pur down its warmth-giving rays upon tho littlo camp. Tho tonts . are all furnished and fitted up alike. i That which Mr. Harriman occupies is no better than tho ono which minor officials of tho railroads who are with him use. Each tent is plainly but com foriably furnished. The furniture in each consists of two white-enamelod iron bedsteads, two oak-finished dross ers, four rocking chairs, a reading tablo, electric heater and electric lifrht fix tures. Tho floors are of hardwood, and are raised about two feet from tho ground. The canvas of the tonts is of tbo heaviest material. Th& private cars of Mr. Harriman and other members of the party are parked a short distance from tho tents. In cne of these cars telecraph and tele phone instruments are installed and a Corps of op&rators are on hand to handle the messrges that como and go at al mtsl a'i hours or the day and night. When shown tho picture, Mr. Harriman said: "I am shown as being: in par j ., cclip?o, but I notice that my head is still out of the shadow," "I have no intention of doinc any wild came hunting whilo down here, ' he raid. " There will be plenty of oth- : er things out of which 1 can And en joyment." "How would you like to accompany President Roosevelt to Africa on a hunt after big name?" asked a voutnrp soiuc newspaper correspondent to whom Mr. Harriman was talking. "I would not mind making a visit to Africa, but I .would exercise the t i right of choosing my own company on j such a trip," he replied, with a smilo. I - ' I Mr. Harriman 's camp is situated iu j the extreme southern part of the grounds of tho Hot Wells hotel and bathing rosort, about throe miles be low tho main part of San Antonio. He spends much of his time in walking over tho grounds and along tho banks of. the river. On the other side of the river, only ouo-balf mile awav. is the anciont San Jose mission. The river , is spanned by a rustic swinqiujj foot- i bridge. This is a spot frequently vis- j ited by Mr. Harrimau.
