THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SATURDAY MORNING, JANUARY 25, 1913. V : . - . - flLTfl CON. OPENS i . HKSTEIlf mffll Resumption of Shipments Hf Will Be Possible Within Next Few Days. H NOW. BREAKING ROADS jrc Company Working- Above the IB Tunnel and Soon Starts E .Work Below. Bra By placing- all I la men on underground mi development -work during tho rather se HK vrc vintcr storms uptho Little Coilon nD 8 Mood canyon, the Alta Consolidated K management S3 placing an extensive ore BE i l tonnage in mlnablo shape, and all con nk yt dltlonn are extremely satisfactory. Su IH ;B perintendont A. O. Jacobsoti was in The B ! I city on Friday, and ho stated to Tho 9 I J Tribune that -w'J 1 1 1 11 three or four days H ! Ja tho roads should be in a sufficiently good j j Iff condition to allow shipments to be ro il I jj naned by tlie company. I 8 .Will Utilize Tram. 1,15 .Vita has experienced an unusuailv se- m varo January, thero has been a heavy j snowfall, whtlo the hours not punctuated by snow were Ailed with hard winds -which shifted tho snow back and forth, every element of nnturo combining to embarrass the mining operations of man-Kind. On TYiday the road up tJie canyon had been broken as far as L the Columbus Consolidated, and It should I 1o in good bnpo to the Alta Consoll- n dated lu a, few daye. 'B So far tho Alta Consolidated company ifl 5as not the advantage of tho Michlgan- Utah tramway leading from Alta to Tan- M Jiers Plats, :ive miles below the upper w terminal. With a sufficiently long good m weather stretch tho Alta Consolidated tfi management will complete the conncc rf tlons with the trnm. so that the fmuro ;jj shipments can bo handled to Tanners fl ny this modern system. 1 As to property condition?, !Mr. Jacob- F son says that they are very satlsfac- lory. On the first level (100 feet) above I The main tunnel the management Is 1 ' drifting cast and west on two feet of 1" high-grade shipping ore, the two faces 1 being about 100 feet apart, and both I having covered this distance entirely in I ore. On the second level (ifOO feet) abovo I ihe tunnel, drifting also continues In f Mile ore east and wost, -while raising B In ore Is being prosecuted Just as tho I raise from the tunnel Icvol proceeded f hi ore to the first level rome time ago. Plans for Shaft Work. Arrangements arc hcing rounded out for driving the main shaft bolow the tunnel level. Ore haa been demonstrated Jo continue twenty-five feet below the 5 tunnel by winze work so far, and the . .shaft was started at a point tvhlch will bring this work to the contact tho Quick est and moat, economically. Active shaft sinking should be well under way i by the first of tho coming month. I When the teams are able to gain the bins again In a fow days they -will find ji fully ISO tons of fine-grade oro awail 2 lng thorn, while tho daily production is St not only generous under existing condl ij tlons, but this feature can be stilt more 0 emphasized, when desirable, so that with jj better transportation facilities tho n property will bo in first-class shape to B produce. I MARKET EASILY IS AFFECTED BY NEWS 9 La(. 3ronday. on a report from "Wash- H Ington that the United States supreme jj court had decided the Minnesota rate S caae favorably from the railroad stand- i point, the big stock markets for a mo- a ment look on quite a decided, optimis- g tic llavor, and several Issues appreciated I Instantly several points a share. But it h T-'os merely a flash in the pan, and when 5 tho truth beenmo known that no decision 5 had been handed down at all, the situa- k. Hon automatically dropped back to its r former notch and the pessimistic shadow 0 again fell across the threshold of the big 5 exclianges. fj This momentary appreciation on a very K weak market Itidicatcd what some real B sood news would is capable of doing for U the stock markets. Everything that is B known to be scheduled to happen of an fl adverse character, and everything that t could possibly be Imagined, future wars, P resilience, cold, heat, flood and drouth, R have boon dldcountcd during tho past L cw weeks markctwise, and the countrv B Home of theso days will be willing and B anxious to got back to a normal basis, i The above is merely apropos in noting i opinions In certain circles that the stock markotH have gone to tho everlasting ; now.womi eternally, and that there is no 9 j rm beyond. The best authorities agree jf lhat & fluctuating market can be cxpect- iiff od until after tho xfra session of con- S i cress, nnd -that the Intelligent trader has i an Ideal opportunity to indulge In quick lurns meanwhile which should not bo i . iicuJccted. JR Be this as it may. one thirjj- is sure rajs t'o have had slump markets before, and I Ml they will come again, but there is going all to be an ndvance some of these early j B jlay from the present ranges also. The m high-claw copper issues are cJ.'pted to H tako the Icaxl. I OPENING UP FISSURE IN PITTSBURG-IDAHO "White operations at the Plttsburg Idaho property arc somewhat altered ow ing to the freeing of the pipe line feed ing the equipment, the management Is doing a considerable amount of in;w de velopment which might, under different circumstancc-s, be allowed to wait a fav orablo opportunity. One item of such work If? ihn drifting upon the llf-sure en countered by extending tho main lunnM lo the westward, and for thirty feot thl IlRsuro has shown four feet of llrst-class ore which can bo marketed as broken, T.tero Is still another fisFun seven feet in width gaining attention, both of these points having several hundred feet of depth and in entirely virgin ground MUSOROifE MILL IS iWIPPEUTipW Full Capacity to' Be Gained by Addition of New Boiler - in -Two .Weeks. K. L. Edwards, general munugoi' of the Ahisgrovu Mining company of Idaho, is in the city conferring with his local associates and ho brought with him the good news that the new Musgrovc mill ing plant has been placed In operation. The company has not sufficient bollor capacity its yet to keep tho mill operat ing at Its maximum tonnago efficiency, ! but within a fortnight a now boiler will be Installed, from u'hlch time tho plant will be kept going at full blast. Enough work has boen done at tho plant to give It a thorough testing, and Mr. Iklwarda says that a splendid saving has been demonstrated and Is assured for the future. The plant. Is nominally a twenty-fivo-ton affair and there Is a sufficient sold ore tonnago In blocked form to guarantee tho plant a long run. Connections have been, completed be tween the uppor and tho lower tunnels, so the mine Is In condition to provldo this tonnage, and stoplng Is being done at this time. There aro ,a. great many Salt Lake Investors numbered among the Musgrnvc shareholders and I hey will welcome tho ncw that the proposition Is so near perfection'. Mr. Edwards's next visit to Salt .Lake City likely will bo mode with the first consignment of bullion, which will bo converted Into dividends as fast a3 possible. Pollock & Co., bankers and brokers, furnish the following, received ovor their private wire yesterday after noon: Paine. Webber & Co.. Boston Owing to fear of renewed outbreak of hostili ties In the east, foreign markets wero all depressed again lodav and market for metal was muoh weaker. Tho good feeling which prevailed the past fow days toward coppers was again checked and will proba'bly remain so for the next few days. Notlu'ng Is definitely known regarding peace terms. Taking all the adverse news tho coppers held woll. clearly indicating that they havo been fairly liquidated and that the next im portant move will be upward. Logan & Bryan, New York The stock market taken as a whole acted quite well in tho face of the disturbing political news from the other side. The unsel tlement In the foreign markets was re flected by liquidation of American Issues by London on a good scalo and, In ad dition, some domestic selling took place, but the list displayed rather good re sistance and aside from the trading In tho first hour, it eould hardly be said that weakness was at any time aculo. The market had to contend with a sharp decline in Illinois Central, the samo being accompanied bv talk of a reduction In the dividend a't the forth coming meeting, but such was discredited bv what appeared to be authoritative ad vices emanating from high sources, It being said that earnings are showing a decided improvement. The progress of international strife In Turkey and the attitude of now ministry will be watched very carefully and. perhaps, for a period dominate the course of International so curlty markets, but Inasmuch as the large powers have taken an active Inter est In the affair and will, perhaps, ex ert extreme pressure as soon as it Is more clearly defined as to which cle- the view Is entertained that matters will be solved without complications, though, admittedly, the existing status of affairs suggests a condition warranting consid erable caution. As far as tho stock market is con cerned, wo bellevo that while the Incen tive to promote a material riso is In great part lacking at prosenr, that nevertheless the course of least resis tance will bo found to be on the buy ing side during weak periods.
