WAINEWSII S "T1Fr' HARD Rumor of Verkun's Fal Causes Sharp Break on New York E-change. STRADERS SELL IN HASTE Nuber of Issues Sufer Througi Stampede - Mexican Petroleum Weak After Caraaza Order. New York. Feb. U-Professional trad ers hoisted the German flag in Wall Street today and captured Verdun just before the market closed. Scores of trad ers were nervous and did not stop to verify the rumor of Verdun's fall. but sold precipitately. The result was a sharp break. and the market closed In full swing downward. with final prices lowest of the session. While net losses were considerable, they dki not mark the extent of the decline. for in the early trading the market had a brisk rally under leadership of Ameri earr.-locomotive. which has become more *I a war stock than an Industrial. The standard issues did not participate in the upward movement, although they did yield in the final drive. Among those suffering most were Mex ican Petroleum. Studebaker. Willy&-Ove! land. Marine preferred, Crucible and Canadian Pacifl.. That these did suffer most, however. was purely accidental. It just happened that they were the most active issues, and the traders dealing -in them happened to be standing by the tickers. The whole drive was so quick and unexpected that brokers had no time to notify speculators not in constant touch with prices. These people will be on hand Monday. and should the rumors of today be justified by developments around Verdun. Wall Street must expect a lively session. In addition to the war news Mexican Petroleum had, as a reason for weak n:ess. the announcement by Carranza that the Mexican government proposes to drill for oil to supply the Mexican railroads. An unusual volume of stock has been taken out of the market. So many in vestors have made so much money that they have become frightened at their owlL success. They have put this profit into standard shares. which they have had transferred to be laid away as perma nent investments. The result Is that in many of the most active issues there is only a small minority interest available for trading purposes. In one prominent company definite figures obtained from insiders has also showed that less than 30 per cent was available for trading purposes. JEW YORK STOCK ]ARKET. Furaished by W. B. Hibba & Co. For a time the coalers were firm, especially Read ing, but under cover of the strength in the same, distribution occurred in other directions. There was not much In the day's news budget to excite comment, though It in generally realised that the situation with respect to Berlin is still critical. Many tired bulls, discouraged on account of the poor response which the list has made to satisfactory basic conditions. are now disposed to reduce lines, and in addition thereto the element bearishly disposed in working aggressive ly on the down side with quite some suc cess We continue to believe that stocks sold at or around the prevailing levels can be replaced to advantage later on.
