Best Financial Iag Publishd in Wast WAR DISCUSSION DULLS TRADIM Brokers Believe Order for $84,000,000 in Munitions Means Long Strife. SPECULATORS WORRIED Western Maryland Road Reports Gain of 110 Per Cent in Its Net Earn inp for February. New York. March 30-Wall Street discussed the German situation today with real seriousness and the result was a market heavy. dull, and of small volume. This serious note was injected into the situation by semi ofnetal announcement that the offlcial purchasing agent of the allies is re turning to New York after a long stay I* London with orders for 984. 000.000 more shrapnel to be placed with three companies whose current contracts will soon be worked out. This did not appeal to Wall Street as a move for peace. Renewal of sharp fighting around Verdun was an other development that made for con servatism. Traders are beginning to get wor ried over the prospect of a long war. Everybody realizes that American corporations are tremendously strong in cash resources now and that If the war Is to continue two years or even one year longer. it will be found that very few quotations are high enough to discount conditions. This is re straining the bears. Investors have put much of their idle funds into long-term bonds at at tractive prices and while they are very rich. they have not the funds with which to speculate in ordinary stocks* That takes from the market thouands of persons who helped to make the big bull campaign of last year. Couatry Rolling Ia Wealth. The only other class available for stock market material is made up of thos e thousands of business men who did not have money enough to par twipate in last year's market, but who now are rolling in wealth as a result of the general prosperity of the coun try. They would be In the market. but are restrained by what they con sider high prices and by their fear that an early peace may end the boom before they have an opportunity to realize any profits. The result Is al most a deadlock. Wall Street tickers were busy today publishing arguments put out by the railroada against an advance of wages. These arguments were inter rupted from time to time to permit the publication of railroad reports show ing marelous increases of net earnings for February. Western Maryland showed a net increa.e of 110 pi cen. Reading. 90 per cent; Atlantic Coast Line. 56 per cent. St. Paul, do per cent, and the Alton, 75 nor cent. Railroads have entered the munitions class of stocks. and the serious part of Wal Street belie' es that employes should re'-ive a material bonus. but with the undorstand:ng, as in the case of the other m.initions .ompanies. that it should be only for the boom period. Railroads are regarded as munitions companies because transportati:on is as much an ingredient of shra;ne! as are steel and explosives. H R Stettinius. purchasing agent of the alies. !s expected home next Wednes day with an 884.000.D order for shrap nel. The report today, traced directly to one of the companies named. says that the American Locomotive Company is to get $43.00). of this order, and the West inghouse and the New York Air Brake 1.,000 each. The order will be for !our-inch and 9.2-Inch shells. This is tile order that American Loco notive directors have been speculating n for weeks. NEW YORK STOCK MART-T. New Yok. Marc 3 High. La. OTHER FINANCIAL NEWS Expect Lanston Dividend Will Be De clared at Meeting of Directors on Tuesday-Copper Booms. Uncertainty as to the outcome of the new submarine crisis continued to show in the general list In New York yester day, and in addition oil shares reflected the threat of a Congressional inquiry into the cost of gasoline. Regarding the probabilities of the in ternational situation, the best informa tIon New York can get from Washington is that the President is through with note-writing and that it will be a diffi cult Job even for Congress to soothe his present distemper. Lauston Dividend Empected. Lanston stock refleQged some reassur ance on the part of brokers yesterday following the announcement that another meeting of the directors prior to the an nual meeting probably would declare a 6 Per cent dividend, payable June 1. It is expected the regular monthly meeting of the directors next Tuesday will see the declaration of a dividend. Light directors were present at Wed nesday's meeting, and all were favor able to the declaration of a dividend. The absence of the chairman of the finance committee is believed to have been the cause. for the failure of those directors present to declare a dividend. A 6 per cent dividend would call for $90,000, and leave p good working surplus. Washina-ton Gas Shows Weakness. Washington Gas continued to show slight weakness yesterday In the face of fair activity. A total of 104 shares changed hands at a downward range of 741-' to 741-4. At the closing, the stock was offered at 74 1-4. with 74 the best bid. Irregularities on Market. The following summary of the action of the New York list was giVen out by W. B. Hibbs & Co. after close yesterday: "Coppers acted quite well in view of the recent large sale of metal to Europe, and well defined reports as to a further inquiry for substantial amount. In other directions, however, liquidation and spec ulative selling characterized things, and much Irregularity occurred. Oil shares were depressed on a contemplated Inves tigation of the cause of the prevailing high prices for gasoline. "Judging by the Washington advice. the situation with Berlin is likely to be brought to a head in the near future. and current predictions are none too asavi. Sem-ould appear from the tenor of the advices emanating from Wash ington that no further temporising will be tolerated. If present tendencies con tinue, the outcome is likely to be such as to cause distinct nervousness in the stock market. The Mexican news was not conclusive and tended to aggravate things. Taken as a whole, the incen tive exists to contract long lines within reasonable bounds. until the outlook is more assuring." Copper Boom Unsurpassed. It is said that lt.00.000 pounds of eop per was sold Wednesday and that the demand continues to exceed all previous records in the history of the United States. Big War Orders Expected. The following dispatch was received from a New York financial house by a local broker yesterday: "It is expected upon return of E. R. Stettinius, of J. P. Morgan & Co., a number of large war orders now under negotiation will speedily be released. "One of these orders involving about $4,000,000 will probably be divided be tween American Licomotive Company. which will get $42,000.000 of the business, and the Westinghouse and New York Air 'rake Company's. which will each take about $11.000M,0. The order calls for four Ipch and nine-inch shells. Negotiations have been conducted with greatest secre cy, but it is understood that they are now reaching final stages. Mr. Stettinius is expected back next Tuesday." Bank to Pay Dividend. The Columbia National Bank will pay the usual quarterly dividend of 3 per cent tomorrow. Reailg Shows Surplus Gain. The figures for all companies of the Reading system for February show an increase in surplus of $1.141,746. Memorial to Mr. Finley.
