EEST "S11E&T' WEAK ONPIURASES Market, as Result, Shows Lit tile Sign of Expected Activity. CLOSE AT HIGH LEVELS U. S. Steel Makes Return of Unilled Orders Which Proves Revolution of Current Business Expansion. New York. April 10.-Just as the stock market last week did not show as much weakness as might have been indicated in reflection of the news. so it failed today to display the strength which might have been expected. There was a suggestion of at least some di minution of immediate tension in the Sussex case phase of the crisis caused by Germany's sumbarine warfare. Yet Wall Street manifested no disposition to buy stocks enthusiastically at ris ing prices. On the contrary there was again a repetition of the offering of stock, which has become a familiar event whenever any moderate increase of absorptive capacity is vouchsafed. The market was firm and for that matter relatively strong. Trading did not expand over the minimum scale of average volumes lately, and the level of recovery established was practical ly owing to the sharp general Jump of prices in the early dealings. The close was in he tmain around the high levels of the opening, but between these two extremes of the day there was an interval of materially higher prices which were not maintained. C. C. Steel Makes Reper[. The United States Steel Corpora tion made a return of unfilled orders at the end of March. which was an extraordinary revelation of the cur rent general business expansion. The total business of the corporation under contract was 9.331,001 tons, or more than double the volume of orders ahead a year ago. All this and other returns of the unprecedented accu mulation of profits in trade and indus try brought emphasis anew to the backwardness of the stock market without hinting as to why the share list has at no time since business re covery set in. not even at the top of the rise last autumn, discounted or measured the general business devel opment. In the foreign exchange market the feature was the further decline of francs to practically the low level which was reached last autumn. The unchecked fall of French bills is pro voking curiosity over the failure of any arrangement to transpire for the protection of French credit in the ancial market. FEW YOB' STOCK XAR1'. Although Trading Is Not Spinted-Fractional Ad vances on Exchange Here. A stead rise in wheat based on a situp tion which may prove serious in the market. was confidently predicted yester day, as the supply premises to be de flcient this year in the face of a heavy and sustained demand. It is pointd out that the consumer will continue to de mand wheat in the present volume for some time after the war ceases, and the meeting of that demand will be up to the year's supply, which I. already de ficlent. An indication of the present de mand. due to war conditions. ean be gathered from the following comparison: Receipts of wheat at primary markets on this orep exceed by 170,000,000 buehels the receipts during the same period of the crop year preceding the .ginning of the war. and this enermoug demand is indicated by the fact that practically all contract grades of cash wheat are now selling at a premium over futures. List Cleees Higher. Summarising the action of the New York list yesterday, W. B. Hibbs & Co. made public the following telegram from their correspondents: "While trading was not spirited, the list closed higher. The accumulation of selling orders over the week-end was meagre, which perhaps was accounted for by the somewhat more pacifi. tone of press advices with respect to the Mexi can and the German situation. The Steel statement revealing an increase of over 70.00 tons in unfilled orders for the month of March was without influence as a market factor. The reports of the prominent copper producers, Utah and Chino, were very good, and Imparted a moderate degree of strength to copper shares, as did the advices of another large sale of the red metal. There are no distinct indications of the market having worked itself out of the rut. The professional element is bearish and the short Interest of late has expanded con siderably. Long stocks do not come out in large volume in the declines." Fractieal Advances Here. An improvement in the demand for bonds yesterday brought about some fractional advances Ia this part of the local list, and business generally re flected this improvement. Lanston, how ever, continued to show a weakness that has been apparent since the declaration of a dividend on a 6 per cent basis early this month, and for the first time since that declaration, sales were recorded to day, and offerings were free at 77. a point under the bid price sustained for some time. Only twenty-four shares ebenged hands altogether. however, the last off lot going at 76 7-1. Washington Gas was again strong and the leader of the list, 64 shares selling strongly at 75. In the sale of an odd lot of Railway preferred at 63, the price was advanced 1-2 a point above recent fig ures. Bull Movesment is Copper. A resumption of the bull movement in copper shares is confidently predicted, though apparently there is some specula tion in the face of existing conditions as to why the upturn is delayed. Some of the big operators are believed to be pre paring for a bull drive later this week. It was reported from Boston that an other big copper deal involving 100.000,000 pounds. had been consummated by sev eral large producers amliated with Ana conda and American Smelting and Re fining Company. Inspiration Copper yes terday reported a surplus for six months' operations of $600.000. Great Northern Ore Poutable. It was reported yesterday that profits of the Great Northern Ore for the cur rent year are expected to exceed $4 a share. WASHINGTON STOCK EXCHANGL Furished by W. . Hibbs A Ce. SALES.
