Capital Traction Leads Legal Stock
Market at 6 34.
Following the trend toward a irmer
tome, evidenced earlier in the week.
p01 on the local market were
stronger than usual yesterday. Bais.
however, were few, and consisted
generally of small lots. Bond sales
showed an increase In number over
the preceding day's exchange trans
actIons.
Advancing slightly. Washington Gas
5's sold at front 100 3-4 to 101. Ameri
can Graphophone G's sold in $100 lots
at 100.
Stock trar.isctions were few in
number. Capital Traction led the
market with thirty-two shares sold.
at advances from 81 -C to ft 2-4. A
ten arte lot of Riggs National Bank
brought 40. repeating the pries ef
Tuesday.
Among the returning Washingtoa
bankers during this week was Wil
liam J. Flather, vice president of the
Riggs Nrtional Bank. His vacation
was spent at Portland, Maine.
Market Uneertaim.
The following analysis of the New
York market situation was received
late yesterday afternoon by W. B.
Hibbs and Company. from C. B.
Chapin and Company. their New
York correspondents:
The stock market continues to
make sure the uncertainties con
fronting the situation. and the ever
changing proposals which are being
advanced in connection with the mat
ters of price fixing and taxation as
well as the gradual hardening of
money rates and the unsatisfactory
status of affairs in Russia.
-'The progress of the central pow
ers in Russia would seem to denote
that large supplies of food stuff& and
mineral products are likely to ac
crue to the Teutonic allies as a re
suit of the disintegtation of the Cos
sack forces. whleh if realized, would
undoubtedly tend to prolong the war
and make it much more difficult for
the allies to achieve their ends which,
of course. from an American view
point spells heavier and heavier taxa
tion, which is very depressing to the
holders of corporate issues. while of
cotirse rallies in the stock market
may be promoted from time to time.
as a consequence of a temporarily
oversold conditions or short covering.
Still the incentive to take a stand on
the constructive side of things is still
lacking, and even the present prices
for securities in many instances ad
mittely do not fully measure actual
wor1th."

LESSON NO. 15-FIGHTING
We have spoken so far as if all
soldiers were infantrymen; that is,
its if all fought on foot armed with
ride and bayonet. And we all know
an army Is much more complex.
There are two other "fighting arms"
of tbd service, the cavalry and the
artillery. These three banches of
the army are sometimes called the
"ine-a term which comes down
to us from the day when soldiers
in battle were always drawn up in
line. The other branches to be de
scribed later, are iluded under the
general term "staff." However, the
Engineer Corps and the Signal
Corps are in part troops of the line.
though they are herein described for
convenience tinder the heading of
"staff branches of the service."
Vaie of Infsatry.
It is not enough for infantry to
know how-to defend itself. It must
know also how to attack. It is not
enough that it should be able to
move forward In masses. The in
fantry soldier must also have the
intelligent self-reliante that will
enable him to act as an Individual;
always, of course. within the limits
of military discipline.
The chances for initiative in pres
ent-day warfare can best he illus
trated by recounting the story of
Nlichael O'Leary. a lance corporal
of the Irish Gluards in the Britieh
army. On Febuary 1. 1915. the
Guards were ordered to retake a;
trench which had been temporarily
lost to the Germans.
Jumping out of the trench he ran
at full speed to a railroad cut on
the right of the first German line
where he was partly under cover
foma the enemy R fire. With five rlayt
in succession he killed or dieabied
five men before his comrades reach
e1 the trench. Not satiefied with this,
