Again the taL eppraaiegdbhave die covered that an estate accumulated by a man of- great business Caepacity frequently amounts to about MO. .00. 'A little more or a little less than M60S.010 represents the money vplue of the estate left by many men who gained prominence in the worla of industry or business affairs or in transportation. Jay Gould's estate was found to amount to about MI5.US,. RussellI Sage's estate was a little in excess of this. E. H. Harriman's estate wasi two or three millions over eighty millions. Meek Flerida Preperty. In his lifetime and after the suc cess of his daring and. many thought. abeurd proposition to develop rail road and hotel properties in Florida and build a vast viaduct around the Florida Keys for his railroad whereby instant communication could be es tablished by means of large freight ferry boats plying between Havana and Key West. the common estimate was that Mr. Flagler had accumulated not less than a hundred millions. The tax appraiser finds that out of his estate of seventy-five millions, fifty millions can be reasonably Florida property. But many times fifty millions can bt reasonably reckoned as the increased wealth of Florida by reason of the construction of the Flagler railroads and the ocean ferry to Havana. for very great agri cultural development has followed the building of the Flagler railroads. The other twenty-five millions proh ably Includes his investments In Standard Oil properties and perhaps in other Industrials. Three Great Railreads. Mr. Flagler contemplated early in the eighties when a little past 50 years of age great railroad development In Florida and he purposed this develop ment exclusively through individual financing. No doubt a considerable part of the fifty millions which his Florida properties are appraised at re flects conversion of Standard Oil se curities into this great work. Mr. Flagier. so far as is known. anced exclusively with his own credit and mean@ the construction of this rail road system and the Improvements. So also did H. H. Rogers who, pos inspired by the example of his th106an Sciate in the Standard Oil Comany. Mr. Flagler, personally and exclusively financed the construc tion of the Tidewater Railroad. whose western terminal is in the great coat fields of the Appalachian Range and whose eastern terminal is at Norfolk. There was a time in panic days when Mr. Rogers. being hard pressed for ready cash, was compelled to secure advances from a New York bank upon rather rigorous terms. He was obliged to endorse his own notes. to furnish the highest grade of securities, in cluding Standard Oil certificates and to agree to pay 7 per cent interest. So far as was known ar. Flagler was never under stress of that kind. mes. Metheds. Henry M. Flagler. H. H. Rogera and Norman B. Ream within the past' twenty-five years constructed railroad systems in the South. each of which compelled the mastering of exceeding ly difficult engineering problems. All of these master builders of railroads decided to adopt the beat modern methods of railroad construction. Mr. Flagler originated the plan whereby hm railroad extends around southern Florida upon concrete structures. whose foundafion are the coral keys south of Florida. Mr. Relm and Mr. Rogers found It necessary to conquer very difficult engineering problems. for the railroads they contemplated were to penetrate mountain ranges. Both instructed their engineers to butld as straight a Une as possible no matter what the cost,. to educe grades to the lowest possible figure and, sO far as practicable. to elimi net. ebryes. Mr. Ream was the orig inator of the railroad which now ex tends from the Clinchfield coal regions almOst in a straight line to Spartans bSg. S. C. It cost a great deal of 'MeO . but Mr. Ream believed as did Mf. Rogers that the economies ef fected by modern construction would speedily repay the extra cost. Both wem norrect in that Opinon. The railroad terminates at Spar tabUrgh. S. C.. Where connection is made With a line that runs directly to Ma~etn. Today visible evi denes of the magnitude of this en terprise are furnished those who visit Charleston by the mammoth terminals there erected whereby the export of coal can be fthelitated. Cest san a Many men of good business judig meat wondered whether Mr. Roger, like his long-time associate. Mr. Flagler, was not undertaking an im practicable railroad proposition when he decided to build without co-opera Sion a railroad extending from the coal regions 9) miles to a terminal in Norfolk, and so to build It that it .hl eeagare favoralty with the Pestestructed railroad systems in the United States. He lived only long enough to share ia. the celebration of the completion of this road, Were he living now he conld contemplate with gratification the evideness that his project was well jutinfed cemmerc'iafly.
