100 Years Ago And T oda DR. HUNTER McGUIRE, former President of the American Medical Association and of the American Surgical Association; Founder of the University College of Medicine; Medical Director Jackson Corps, Army of Northern Vitginia, wrote: < "Before the civil war I paid a visit to Capon every season for live or six years, and have had excellent opportunities to test the qualities of the water. I consider it very valuable both u a tonic and alterative, and frequently recommend its use to patients suffering with certain forms of dyspepsia and in cases of chronic kidney and bladder troubles. Its good effects in such cases are marked and decided." DR. DA COSTA Professor in Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in an . article on "Lithiasis" or "Lithemia," in the American Journal of Medical Sciences for Octob^rT 1881. wrote: Urging the use of alkaline diuretic waters "such as Carlsbad and Vichy on the continent of Europe and in this country, the Capon Springs." DR. BARTHOLOW in "Materia Medica," page 205, especially recommends Capon Springs Water for "uric acid renal calculi." DR. BEDFORD BROWN, formerly President of the Southern and Gynecological Association; formerly President of the Medical Society of Virginia, etc., etc., wrote: "Having been familiar with it for forty years, I regard Capon Spring Water AS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE IN AMERICA It is especially valuable in 'uric acid diathesis' and all that long list of diseases arising from that cause, as gouty and rheumatic tendencies, affections of an organic and func tional nature of the kidneys, as Blight's Disease, renal dropsy, ordinary sub-acute nephritis, catarrh of the bladder, inflammation of the prostate gland and affections of the urethra. It is equally applicable in acid and atonic forms of dyspepsia, indigestion, torpidity of the liver, functional derangement of the intestinal canal, and also to all affections of the skin." DR. W. V. MARMION, of Washington, D. C.. wrote: "I KNOW OF NO WATER COM PARABLE TO CAPON for bladder and kidney troubles. Vichy, France, does not equal it" RT. REV. BISHOP W1LMER, Mobile, Ala..: "The thought of Capon is refreshing to me. For half a century I have been a visitor there." MR. ROBT. C. OGDEN, of the firm of John Wanamaker: "I shall look back with most de lightful recollections of your unique and very beautiful place." MR. DOUGLAS H. THOMAS, President Merchants National Bank, Baltimore, Md.: "I shall ever recall with pleasure my stay at Capon and the great benefit I derived from the rest, the water and the baths." July 27th, 1918. CAPON SPRINGS CO., Gentlemen: On January 27th, 1913, I was stricken with paralysis which left my right leg like a log of wood, except for incessant pains. I tried many doctors and rem edies, but got no relief. In June, 1918, I began drink ing Cacapon for kidney and blad der troubles, which it cured, but to my amazement, it has also given me back the use of my leg, so that it is now equal to the other, and I am also able.to move my toes for the first time in five years. The use of Cacapon has also given my wife the first painless periods for many years. You may publish this, if you desire, as I feel what has helped me may help others. Truly yours, (Signed) C. E. Chamberlain, 1011 E St. N. W., Washington, D. C. From One of the Best Loved Men in America. San Francisco, Cal., July 29. 1918. Capon Springs Cp., Capon Springs. W. Va. Gentlemen: Enclosed find Postal Order for Six Dollars fornix Gallons of Capon Springs Water. The water was recommended to me by my old friend, Mr. Will Atkinson, who. upon his own suggestion and at his own expense, has sent me four gallons of the water, most of which I have already taken, with very encouraging results. My trouble is "Uraemia," and he assures me that the water will cure me, and from my experience with the sample he sent, I verily believe it will. Kindly send the water at once, as I do not want to be without it, for even a day. Respectfully yours, (Sighed) JAMES G. MAGUIRE. 445 Cole St., San Francisco, Cal. In<an earlier letter (July 11), after drinking part of the first two gallons. Judge Maguire wrote in part: "It has a positive and most encouraging effect on the kidneys. It has given me the first ray ofiiope which has come to me of a complete cure, for my doctor (one of die best in San Francisco), has been of the opinion that my trouble was incurable." Judge Maguire was born in 1853; was Judge of the Superior Court of San Francisco. 1882 to 1888, and Congressman, 1892 to 1898, and was one of the earliest and ablest of the friends of Henry George, author of "Progress and Poverty," "Social Problems," Land Ques tion," etc. On August 15. Judge Maguire telegraphed permission to print these and said the improve ment in his condition continues. From Dr. R. V. Houston, Southern Drug Co., 13th & G N.W. Cacapon Co., Gentlemen: August 24th, 1918. I was nearly helpless from paralytic rheumatism of long standing when I began drinking CACAPON a few weeks ago. After a few days* use of CACAPON I began to regain the use of my right hand and now have complete control of it except for a slight stiffness in the thumb, which is also disappearing. My left hand and arm were in even worse shape and are also improving, though the effect is, naturally, slower. I have no doubt of a complete recovery and am continuing the regular use of CACAPON and recommending it to others. I did not believe that anything in the world was capable of curing a case as bad as mine, and feel so grateful to you for bringing CACAPON within reach of the public that you are free to print this if it will help others. Truly yours, R. V. HOUSTON, Phar. D. Southern Drug Co., 13th and G Sts. N. W. Washington. D. C Health, Beauty and Happiness for Women Extract from an article published in the "Maryland Medical Journal," written by DR. THOS. A. ASHBY, of Baltimore. Md.: "The Capon Spring Water belongs to the class of Alkaline Carbonated Waters which rank high iff therapeutic value, and include many of the most noted waters in this country and Europe. It is similar in its effects, though quicker and more positive in its action, than the Vichy of France and the Carlsbad of Germany. "The groups of diseases in which Capon Spring Water will be found beneficial are those affecting the digestive organs, the uri nary organs and the reproductive organs. In dyspepsia, constipation and disorders of the liver, accompanied by a torpid and unhealthy biliary secretion, the water may be used with marked advantage. This is especially true of that form of dyspepsia in which there is an ycess of acid secretion, or in those catarrhal troubles which occasion so much annoyance and render life burdensome. The laxative action of the water has a tendency to over cone the severe forms of constipation and to bring about a healthy condition of this func tion. The relief to this habit is noticeable in a number of cases. "The well-known action of this water as ?> is*it! e. alterative and diuretic makes it of O X ]d.-d \ liuc the cure of chronic rheu my.:, tti, rti'ntv.tht gout, and other troubles re sulting from Urdy and imperfect action of the organs of secretion and excretion. "The writer has observed most striking re sults in cases of rheumatic gout, syphilitic rheumatism and chronic inflammation, induced by the use of Capon Spring Water and the baths. Individuals who came to Capon Springs as nearly helpless invalids from rheumatic gout and syphilitic rheumatism have been known to return home, after six weeks' resi dence, entirely relieved and restored to suf ficient health to resume the duties of business. In syphilitic rheumatism especially has this effect been noted. The writer is well convinced that this unfortunate class of patients will find as good results from the use of Capon Spring Water, and hot Capon Water Baths, as can be secured anywhere. "The Capon Spring Water first secured fame for its influence in kidney and vesical troubles. Its alkaline and diuretic properties have brought relief and cure in chronic diseases of the kidneys, in catarrh of the bladder, in enlarge ment and irritation of the pros tate gland and in functional dis turbances of the genito-urinary organs. The well-known solvent or disintegrating action of this water draws annuallv to the Springs cases suffering from ne phritic and vesical calculi. The ac tion of the water disintegrates the rough edge of the calculi, reduces their size and admits of their pas sage along the urethra with com parative ease. Two cases of this character are now here, greatly improved in health and free from these sources of kidney and blad der irritation. "In all catarrhal troubles most decided im provement has been observed after a short residence. This has been especially noted in cases of nasopharyngeal catarrh, in chronic cystic catarrh and in chronic follicular pharyn gitis. The good results observed in these cases are justly attributable to the use of the water and baths as no other medication has been employed in a single instance. "Reference should be made to the well-known virtues of the Capon Spring Water in uterine disturbances. I n dysmenorrhea, leucorrhea, amenorrhea and chronic cervical and corporeal endometritis, its action has been found to be reliable and beneficial. "Many cases of sterility are directly trace able to catarrhal affection of the uterus and to acid discharges therefrom. To the relief afforded in these catarrhal troubles has un doubtedly originated the great reputation of the Capon Spring Water in the cure of sterility. "Reference might be made at some length to the local surroundings of Capon as offering special attractions to the invalid, but your space will not admit of lengthy details." DR. LEONARD WEBER, of New York, wrote: "Capon Spring Water belongs to the order of alkaline mineral waters, and on account of the carbonates of soda which it contains the Capon Water will improve the digestive powers of the stomach by increasing the production of gastric juice and in inhibiting the abnormal production of acids. By oxidizing the acids it will increase the alkalescency of the blood and make the albumen and fibrin more soluble. It will consequently improve the general nu trition and by its diuretic effects favor the resolution of pathological exudation particu larly those in mucous membranes. "The alkaline baths support the action of the Capon Water by acting upon the nerves and blood vessels of the periphery and will be especially useful in cases of glandular swellings, certain affections of the skin and diseases of the female organs. "The diseases in which the Capon Spring Water would be indicated are: 1. Catarrhal affections of the organs of respira tion, chronic pneumonia, pleuritic exuda tions. 2. Dyspepsia and all catarrhal affections of the stomach and bowels. 3. Diseases of the liver, particularly hyperemia, fatty degeneration, gall stones and calculi. 4. Catarrhal affections of the kidneys and the bladder. 5. Uterine catarrh. 6. Scrofulosis. 7. Rheumatism, gout and rheumatic gout. 8. Diabetes melitus." DR. ROBT. R. TAYLOR, of Philadelphia, wrote: "Long residence at Capon Springs has strengthened my earlier convictions of the medical value of the Capon Spring Water, and 1 say without hesitation that in such diseases as acute and chronic inflammation of the kidneys or bladder, in Blight's disease and diabetes, in rheumatism, gout and rheumatic gout, in dyspepsia and is chronic uterine dis eases, THE WATER OF THE CAPON SPRING HAS NO EQUAL among the other natural mineral waters of this country. In one of the worst cases of chronic eczema, within my experience, entire relief was afforded by two months' treatment, to which, it should be remarked, the patient lent himself willingly and faithfully. Two cases of eczema palmaris yielded equally to regularly administered treat ment. "That the water of the Capon Spring Has not acquired international reputation, as the equal of Vichy or Carlsbad, is, in my opinion, due to the fact that the visitors at Capon find it a place of pleasure resort, and its life in consequence so attractive, that they are un willing to subject themselves to a restricted regimen, and to regulated hovrs for exercise, rest and sleep."
