DOUGLAS 10 TO LEAD THE OLD IUCH HORSE RED SOX WIN I CONVOY PURSE Tombolo, Ensor Up, Comes Close to Nosing Out Jef fords' Gelding. laurel. Md.. Oct. 30.?After several unsure**/ul attempts to Ret down in front. Red Sox, from the Jeffords stable, beat Tombolo by a nose in the Convoy Purse, the feature race of the card here today. On her toes at the break. Red Sox made the rest of the field look like they were chasfng him for the en- I tire scamper of a mile. The green and white colors of the Jeffords sta ble showed in front until the six teenth pole, when Ensor, on Tombolo, began to ride his mount out, but too I late to catch the Jeffords gelding. So close was the finish that backers] of Tombolo held tight to their tickets : until the result was made official. Repeating his good race of Sat urday, Franklin annexed the Ion;; end of the purse in the Victory LiW- j fcrty Rond Handicap. Had it not been that Aurum was caught dead i at the break the backers of Franklin would have many alibis to tell their I listeners. Franklin had the ad van- } tage and made every post a winning i one, while Aurum was practically left at the post and ran over his field, but the lead held by Franklin; was too much and he could not catch . the leader. While a lot of "wise * money went in the machines on' Valor, the best the Ward colt could I do was to run in the show position. The green and white colors of the j Jeffords 8table were in front again in the Peerless Purse for two-year-olds when Routeledge with Ambrose in the pilot house annexed the brackets. Routeledge was off to an early start and went merrily on her way in front of her field for the distance. Knot, the favorite in the betting, stumbled j and almost vent *? her knees at the I break but found her racing legs in ' time to grab the place position. His { Sister, the chestnut filly belonging to ! A. L. Aste, finished third. Jockey Kelsey, who had the mount j on Daydue in this race, had a spill j over the fence when the fractious i Daydue l?olted suddenly. The boy j ?hr uninjured other than a severe shakeup. A good thing went wrong in /the} sixth race when Monomoy showed his hankers he was as good on a fast track as he *s in the mud when he grabbed off the honors and paid j a little better than 6 to 1. The much touted good thing Ruckboard was up in the running for he en tire hike of a mile and a sixteenth i but only got up in time to finish third. Peerless One from the Mc- I Lean stable weakened in the final j drive. Sandman 2nd came from nowhere in the seventh race to take down the purse. Dr. Campbell was second with Arbitrator third. The eighth race proved a grand j scamper when twelve horses faced starter Milton. At the break Brav- ; ado and Dolina were away gallop- , ing, In the stretch Bravado drew 1 away in time to get the decision ; with Dolina second and Kddie ^Henry ; third. W. F. Knebelkamp had an easy i time in the hop when he disposed of < Pebeto at the ninth jump and won galloping. Turner, on Knel>elkamp. j began his ride at the ninth Jump and i had everything his way until the! numbers were posted. Charlie Leydeeker made every post j a winning one in the first race and j won easily. Blasea way was second > and Blaise third. The summary: FIRST RACE?Six furlong*. MOal^W V Money Situation Results in Slump Despite Favor able Factors! By HHOADAK WAIX. New York, Oct. 30.-Wall 8tr*et yes terday was in a very ugly frame of mind. Intrinsic value*, the nearness of s peace. and everything that might be considered a normal factor in a normal market, were entirely disre garded in a flood of selling that broke United States Steel common ? point*. Mexican Petroleum 14 points. Marine preferred 4 points. Smelters more tha-i 4 points and other shares in corres pond in? degree. On every hand was heard vicious criticism of th?* money committee of the Stock Kxchange authorities, and of everyone and of everything that may have had a hand In the promul gation last week of the money com mittee edict calling upon brokers from Monday next on to have at least 30 per cent margin up on their security borrowing*. In some important houses It was suggested that far more weight and far less criticism would have accom -m panled the increased margin require ments had the order been Issued by Washington authorities instead of by the money committee and the Stprtt Exchange. In this connection it was hinted In some (juartera that the money committer alt along ha* sim ply been the mouthpiece of Wash ington. It was even said that mem ber* of the committee refuse to ac cept responsibility for the order in that they were only obeying Wash ington instructions. Control of Stock Loans. It can .be stated that the money committee does not relish its onerous duties. Washington, it is understood. | has been fighting shy of injecting I itself Into the local money situation. ? The money committee, it is insisted, j is interested only in the total amount , of stock loans outstanding and not 'in the loan position of this or that ) firm or of any group of firms. The 130 per cent margin requirement, and ? possibly higher ones, if the occasion warrants, it is stated, were not de | manded because greater safety is j wanted. The high margin is being i used solely as a lever to control spec J ulative conditions that might run to excesses. Important wire houses are under stood to have l*?en among the chief transgressors a>- regards the amount !of their stock loans now as, com I pared with loans outstanding of Sep ! tember 1? last The way In which some of these houses went about re ducing their loans aroused consider able unfavorable comment. As stated l?efore. practically every well-informed ? house Ik bullish. Instead, however, of ' going frankly to their customers and saying in effect we are very bullish on the market outlook, but owing to the increased margin requirements demanded of us by the banks vWe would ask vou to liquidate some of your holdings." they were charged with issuing bearish market ad\ ices in order to cause liquidation.
