British Prince Likes

High Soaring Plane
London. Sept. 1.?Britain's next king j
has gone through the acid test of
' stunting" In a war aeroplane For
nearly an hour his life depended upon
the steel nerve? and expert flying skill
of a one-armed pilot. Col. W. O. J
Barker. V. G. D. S. O., M. C.. Royal [
Air Force, one of the three great f
Canadian airmen produced by the
war.
It was the first time the Prince
of Waleg really experienced the thrills i
of actual flying as It is done in war- ,
time. He was. at his express wish. {
given a taste of every evolution per- |
formed in the air. and liked It. Every- i

all through he clamored for more.
Col. Barker, by the way, has sev- i
enteen decorations, and won his Vic- !

sixteen Huns in one flght. In all he >

result of wound? received In his last ,
battle, and he flies with It strapped t

The spectacle of the Prince of \
Wales as a passenger In a stunting '
plane attracted scores of people to |
the Hounslow aerodrome, near
London, where the flight took place, j
They were well repaid for their
curiosity. Besides seeing the heir
to the throne in a position where
the least tremor on the part of the
pilot would have resulted in serioua
injury, if not death, they were
treated with one of the best exhlbl- '
tions of trick flying ever performed
in England.
The Prince climbed into the oock
pit of the machine immediately af

Foremost among the achieve
ments of these famous old fighting
craft Is the part they played In the
8panish-American War. The Ore
gon. which had been commissioned
at San Francisco in July, 1896. was
at Mare Island Navy Yard In 1898
when the message was flashed to
her commander that the United
States was at war with Spain On
March 6, 1898, the famous old shfc>
cleared the Golden Oat a bound for
the West Indies, on what proved
to be the most epoch making battle
ship voyagre ever undertaken. With
decks stripped for action and gun
cfews at their statlona the Oregon
plowed around Cape Horn, up the
east coast* of South America and
arrived at Key West on May 26,
ready for action, having made the
14.000 mile voyage In sixty-eight
cruising daya CapL C XL Clark,
the Oregon's commanding officer,
was ordered to take his ship to
Santiago and there join the block
ading squadron which was awaiting
battle with the Spanish fleet.
In the meantime the Iowa, Mas
sachusetts and Indiana sister ships
of the Oregon, were attached to the
North Atlantic fleet and had al
ready arrived off Cuba, the Mas
sachusetts being part of the famous
"flying squadron" under command
of Commodore Schley.

The Oregon. already famoua
throughout the world for her gior
| lous and eucoessful voyage to join
the American fleet in time for the
impending battle, gained greater
glory In the action ofT Santiago de
Cuban on Sunday, July f. 1898. when
: Spanish *ea power was forever bum
j bled and the liberation of the
i Philippines snd Cuba assured. In

ing been cut off from the open sea

for the beach. A shot at the Colon
from one of the Oregon's thlrtgen
1nch guns was the last *hnt flrtd
during the battle.
Both the Indiana and the Iowa
participated In the battle at Santl
ter Col. Barker had descended from
a trial flight. "Contact" was given;
a machine was taxied across the
aerodrome and lifted off the ground.
A succession of quick loops near
the ground gave the spectators and
the Prince their first thrill. A couple
of quick left and right turns fol
lowed by a "roll." in which the ma
chine actually flies upside down,
were the ne*t stunts In order. The
"roll" is one of the most difficult
evolutions known to airmen and is
only attempted by highly skilled
pilots.
A succession of Immelman turns,
sideslips, climbing turns, stalling
turns and dives at a htlght of about
2.000 feet evolved into & series of
spiral glides and the machine
swooped down near the earth.
But the Prince wasn't through
and shouted to the pilot to continue.
It was the signal for a steep climb
and the little machine shot straight
up until It seemed to hang on its
propellor. Its nose went down, ttie
machine gathered more speed and
another climb brought the craft at
nearly a thousand feet. Again Its
nose went down and the Prince was
treated to the greatest thrill of all?
a "spinning nose dive."
Mnehtne Dim WW FVet.
For more than BOO feet the ma
chine fell In a scries of Jerking
turns, nose pointing straight to
<arth and with the engine shut off.
The shriek of the wind on the struts
and wires was plainly heard by the
spectators on the ground. Just as
it appeared as if the Inevitable
crash was about to happen, the pilot
"gave her the gun." flattened out
and landed a* lightly as a feather.
The Prince's faoe was a study as
he carefully clambered out of his
seat and dragged off his helmet.
He stood for a few moments pen
sively gasin* at the fragile eraft.
Then he turned to his pilot.
