Method of Attack in "Next
War Makes Defense
Move Necessary.
Every one of the warships of the
ftrzt and second class In the Ameri
can navy is to be equipped with a
seaplane as soon as possible. It was
learned at th* Navy Department
yesterday.
This policy, with the correlative
one of buiMlnsr a treat fleet of
dirigibles, is directly in line with
the views of the naval war experts
as to what will be required by way
of defense as well as attack in the
-next war." They say that the
time has passed when a direct at
tack on seacoast cities like New
York or Boston may be made by a
battleship fleet, however powerful.
The attack will be by seaplanes, so
navy officers assert, launched from
a moving base of Dreadr.aughts far
out at sea. Hence the plan now an
nounced of converting land planes
into working hydroaeroplanes or
seaplanes to be assigned to each of
the larger ship*.
It was announced some weeks
ago that all of the British battle
ships and cruisers were already
fitted with seaplanes, and 'hat,
therefore in this respect the Eng
lish navy would be superior, ship |
for ship, to any other. Now the
United States is catching up with
out having to wait for special con
structions necessary to English I
?hips, which are provided withj
elaborate runways.
