RESERVE RATIO Declines 1.6 Per Cent, to 76, Average for October. The reserve ratio of tho combined Federal Reserve system declined l.C per cent during the past week. This decline wipes out about two thirds of the gain recorded In the previous week, but leaves the ratio at 7f per cent, which corresponds roughly to the level prevailing dur ing the greater part of October. The week's fall in ratio is due principally to an increase in dis counts. which in turn is readily ex plained by the many and convincing evidences of expanding trade. Both note and deposit liabilities are greater, but reserves are prac tically unchanged. Member banks' loans secured by corporate obligations show a reduc tion of 143.000,000 during the week; loans secured by government ob ligations show a nominal increase. ] while all other, largely commercial, loans and discounts declined by $14,000,000. Under the general head I of investments the largest decline. | vi*., by $30,000,009. is shown for Treasury certificates: United States | bonds and Victory notes show a de cline of $7,000,000. Treasury notes increased by $5,000,000. while cor porate and other securities fell off about $7,000,000. Borrowings of member banks I from their regional members. 1*| keeping with the liquidation of their loans and investments, show a further decline from $274,000.00o to $227,000,000, or from 1.7 to 1.4 per cent of their combined loans an?! investments. Pemonal. Francis M. Savage, president of the Northwest Savings Bank, is back at his desk after a visit to the Middle West. He reports the steel business is very active in that section and much in need of labor ers. and that the steel concerns are looking forward to some years of activity. A. 1. B. Banquet. James C. FWlllwt Dexter an nounced yesterday. COTTON MARKET. NEW YORK. Nov, 3.?There were more new high records for cotton contracts established in today's trading with a continuance of the general buying movement started yesterday. The 25-cent cotton pre dictions made several months ago were realized during the noon hour, when December contracts went to that basis. Shortly before 2 o'clock there was a further advance which carried its price up to 25.06. making a total rise in that month for the day of 50 points from yesterday's closing advance of 10 to 20 points, for the near months. The principal bullish factors today were the firm er and higher Liverpool markets and the news of the further advanc ing tendency to the yarn, cloth, and dry goods market. A good barome ter of the latter was the decision of the largest carpet manufacturers in the country to advance prices 10 per cent. Still another factor was the circulation of more bullish crop estimates. It was announced a Western crop reporting bureau, so called the National Ginners* Asso ciation. was out with a crop esti mate of 9.44A,000 bales. The last government crop report of October 2. when prices were around the 20 cent level, made tho indicated yield on the September 25 condition of 50 per cent, about 10.135 000 bales. Furnished by W. Nov. 3.?Grain values fluctuated in a most erratic manner, profit-taking and closing of spreads and the making of npw spreads be ing the main influences. The great er part of the news on wheat was . construed as radically bullish, but | had little effect, and the close was \ at net losses of 'j to lc. Corn was ' off Hasic. ??ats 'ja^c, and rye Via There was a disposition in some quarters to look for h good reaction in all grains, but on the breaks goon support was apparent. Closing out of a long line of corn through commission houses in the t*arly trading had an unsettling in fluence, but the undertone was not weak. December went to ^c over May at one time and finished a frac tion. July showed the most weak ness. with some buying of May. Ac tion ??f ts reflected that of other grains t?? a great extent. I,ongs were free sellers of rye and the mark't acted tired at times, al though there was a good export demand. Germany taking part of ti?e grain. Furnished by W. B. Hibbs it Company.
