City Lady to a Country Cousin. Dear Chloe: I'm deeply your debtor (Though the mail was uncommonly slow) For the very agreeable letter You wrote me a fortnight ago; I know von are eagerly waiting For ail I promised to write. But my pen is unequal to stating One half that my heart would indite. The weather is terribly torrid ; And writing 's a serious task ; The new style of bonnet is horrid ; And so is the new-fashioned basque ; The former but language would fail Were its epithets doubly as strong The latter is worn with a tail Very ugly and tediously long 5 . v And then as to crinoline Gracious! If you only could see cousin Ruth The pictures, for once, are veracious, " , And editors utter the truth ! I know you will think it a pity, And every one makes such a sneer of it, But there isn't a saint in he city Whose skirts are entirely clear of it ! And then what a fortune of stuff To cover the skeleton over 1 Charles says the idea is enough To frighten a sensible lover; And, pretending that we are to blame For every financial declension, Swears husbands toust soon 4o the ?ame, If wives have another " extension 1" The town is exceedingly dull, And so is the latest new farce; The parks are uncommonly full, But beaux are deplorably scarce. They are gone to the "Springs" and the " Falls," To exhibit their greyhounds and graces. And recruit at what somebody calls The " Brandy-and-Watering places !" Since my former epistle which carried The news of that curious plot, Of Miss S who ran off and was married. Of Miss B who ian off and was not There isn't a whisper of scandal To keep gentle ladies in humor; And Gossip, the pleasant old vandal, Is dying for want of a rumor I Clara. P. S. But wasn't it funny! Mrs. Jcnes, at the party last week; (The lady so proud of her money, Of whom you have oft heard me speak,) -Appeared so delightfully stupid, When she spoke thro the squeak of her phthisic Of the statue of Psyche and Cupid - As the statue of Cupid and Physic!" C. Translated from the German. THE AGES OF ANIMALS AND MEN. When the world was created, and all creatures as- seiubled to have their lifetime appointed, the ass ad vanced first, and asked how long he would have to live. "Thirty years," replied .Nature ; "will that be agreeable to thee ? " Alas !" answered the ass, " it is a long while ! Remember what a wearisome existence mine will be ; from morning until night I shall have to bear heavy burdens, dragging cornsacks to the mill, that others may eat bread while I shall have no encouragement, nor be refreshed with anything but blows and kicks. Give me but a portion of that time, I pray thee." Nature was moved with compassion, and present ed him with but eighteen years. The ass went away comforted, and the dog came forward. "How long dost thou require to live?" asked Nature ; " thirty years were too many for the ass, but will you be contented with them ?" "Is it thy will that I should?" asked the dog. " Think how much I shall have to run about ; my feet will not last so long a time, and when I shall be fit for nothing but to lie in the corner and growl ?" Nature thought he was right and gave him twelve years. The ape then appproached. " Thou wilt, doubtless, willingly live the thirty years, " said Nature. " Thou wilt riot have to labor as the ass and the dog. Life will be pleasant to thee." " Oh, no!" cried he; "so it may seem to others, but it will not be. Should puddings ever rain down, I shall have no spoon ! I shall play merry tricks and excite laughter by my grimaces, and then be rewarded with a sour apple. How often sorrow lies concealed behind a jest ! I shall not be able to en dure for thirty years." Nature was gracious and he received but ten. At last came man, healthy and strong, and asked the number of days. . " Will thirty years content thee ?" " How short a time 1" exclaimed man. " When I shall have buiit my house and kindled a are on my own hearth when the trees I shall have planted are about to bloom and bear fruit when life with me will seem most desirable, I shall die 1 Oh, Nature, grant me a longer period 1" " Thou shalt have the eighteen years of the ass be sides." " That is not enough," replied man. " Take likewise the twelve years of the dog." " It is not yet sufficient," reiterated man ; " give me more." " I give thee, then, the ten years of the ape; in vain wilt thou crave more." Man departed unsatisfied. Thus man lives seventy years. The first. thirty are his human years, and pass switfly by. .He is then healthy and happy; he labors cheerfully, and re joices in his existence. The eighteen years of the ass come next, and burden upon burden is heaped, upon him ; he carries the corn that is to feed others, blows and kicks are wages of his faithful Bervice. The twelve years of the dog follow, and be loses his teeth and lies in a corner and growls. When these are gone, the ape's ten years form the conclu sion. The man, weak and siily, becomes the sport of children. Do not Condemn HASTiLY--Be patient with yoor erring brother ; for God is very patient with you, and it is your duty to imitate your Father in Heaven as much as possible. For one or two acts which may be proved to be wrong, do not. condemn and cast out for ever a beloved brother. You may not understand the whole case, and if you were faith fully and prayerfully to visit that brother, as Christ has labored with you, be might be Baved. Wo can not always see into the heart, and our judgment would perhaps be condemned as often as approved by our Saviour. Instead of castiner stones at an in dividual, we would often, if we knew and felt as Jesus does, sympathisinglr sav to the erring. 'Go and sin no more.' We are called upon to exercise not our judgment so much as mercy and love. BOERHAVE'S HOLLAND BITTERS THE CELEBRATED HOLLAND REMEDY FOR DISEASE OF TirE KIDNEYS, LIVER COMPLAINT, WEAKNESS OF ANY KIND, FEVER AND AGUE, And the various affections consequent upon a disordered STOMACH OR LIVER, Such as Indigestion, Acidity of the Stomach, Colicky Pains, Heartburn, Loss of Appetite, Despondency, Costiveness, Blind or Bleeding Piles. In all Nervous, Rheumatic, and Neuralgic Affection, it has in numerous instances proved highly beneficial, and in others effected a decided cure. This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared ou strict ly scientific principles, after the manner of the celebrated Holland Professor, Boerhave. Because of its great success in most of the European States, its introduction into the United Sta?e was intended more especially for those of our fatherland scattered here and there over the face of this mighty country. Meeting with great success among them, I now offer it to the American public, knowing that its tru ly wonderful medicinal virtues must be acknowledged. - It is particularly recommended to those persons whose constitutions may have been impaired by the continuous use of ardent spirits, or otber forms of dissipation. Gene rally instantaneous in effect, it finds its way directly to the seat of life, thrilling and quickening every nerve, raising tip the drooping spirit, and, in fact, infusing new health and vigor in the system. NOTICE. Whoever expects to find this a beverage will be disappointed; but to the sick, weak and low spirited, it will prove a grateful aromatic cordial, possessed of singular remedial properties. CAUTION! The great popularity of this delightful Aroma has in duced many imitations, which the public should guard agcinst purchasing. Be not persuaded to buy anything else until you have given Boerhave's Holland BitUrs a fair trial. One bottle will convince you how infiuitely superior it is to all these imitations.
