h EVENING STAR. i/Wlocal INTELLIGENCE. tiTATM or Inuoum.-Thi ther Jomster, ia oar counting-room, at 12 o'oloe* J-dtj food at SO iejmi above Mro. T>? Iro* Bridges ?We have heretofore reported that Mr William M Ellii had made an ?xamiaatior, a- the requestor the Mayor of th? iron bridge* across she c*nal, 4|, 7th. 10th 12 h !*cd 14th streets and especially the bnJgt'"n Maryland avenue The suggestions cfMr Ellison the subject are of a practical character, aud have induced the Mayor to en gage him to make the necessary estimates and drawings to secure these bridges hereafter. . Th? securitiy of these bridges is of much im portance to the publio. and the attention given i v> it by the Mayor i? 'leserving of approbation. ' Mr Ellis says in his roport: A. " All of the bridges are defective in their Hi..a-?-ruction In 'he proportion, distribution, A and f 'rm< cf the material with which they are W ecD.<tructed they are subject to unequal ex \ . 4D'ion a'd col tract ion. without any means ' I dju->rmeDt or relief, and to lateral vibri m J*. To the latter eause is to be attributed breakage of fourteen of the diagonal ?:*ces of the cast iron uprighU which connect A'tce upper and lower chord*, on the Maryland ^ ?*ecue bridge, and also the breakage of - sersral of the upright*, on the Twelfth street have been temporarily secured .j wrought iron bands and braces. All of the bwi?es with the exception of that on Mary ??d avenue, have setting considerably in the ?atres of the arches; how much to I am un ieio to determine in ea*h c^se. not knowing is rise o-iginally given to tbese arches. The fret of the settling, however, is evident from tie diagonal rods, or ties, at each end of the Erincipal roadways of each bridge specified sing deflected from a straight line, from one and-a-half to two inches. There is no doubt all of these bridges are becoming daily (from the causes specified) less able to endure the travel that passes over them; and although at ?he present time I do not consider them so un safe ;with the exception of the Maryland avenue bridge, to which I called your atten tion in a former report) as to recommend a suspension of travel, yet I do think measures ?hould be immediately taken to strengthen them " ? \ .Marriage at Willards.?A marriige, tho-tjh very common, is an important event, and therefore everybody and all his and her relations are "a-glee," when one tak* place (Let it be private or public, the old and the young bosom d irees with delight on witness irg the interesting ceremony, which makes ? two willing hearts one " Well, there was a marriage last night at Wizards' Hotel, and ail were agog in the house who knew of the fact What makes it more interesting it was ia runaway match," to use old fashioned par ncce before people got married by steam It appears that a Col B. Market.?This old build ing. which has supplied the good people of Washington with the host of the season" for many years, is fast going to deoay. The f leakage during the heavy storm yesterday 'r.owed that something must be done by the . authorities in tho mat:er. A year ago plans I and specifications for a new market house were invited, and several very fine specimens of art and science were presented to the com mittee having the matter in charge. If we ^ recoiled aright, one of the plans was adopted, I and yet nothing has been done further than \ that towards the erection of a now building *It seems to have been " all talk and Decider;^' but now it is high time that things should be reversed. We publish the following oppor tune communication on the subject, from a lady, and trust that her suggestions may be heeded in the proper quarter : " Jl'ssrt. Editors: Perhaps the very long drought has caused our authorities to forget that the Centre Market leaks to such a degree t-at it is difficult to keep you?elf dry in if, any where, and the country peopl#, who pay high for their stalls, eomplaiu that their eus tomers canoot approach them to deal, for the streams run^inv through the roof. I witnessed mjself, these facts, yesterday, and consider that both on account of buyers and sellers, if we are not to have a new market-house, this had bettor be patched before the next rain. If you will please oail the attention of the proper authorities to this matter in your val uable paper, you will mutually oblige the country people, and yours respectfully, A SUBSCRIBER TO THE STAR." The Coal Mohopolt.?W? are glad to find that the attempt of a portion of the colliers to maintain the ? resent exorbitant price of coal meets with universal condemnation. Purcha sers have discovered that there has been no justification for the advance, and that coal is just as abundant as ever. Let house-keepers combine to checkmate this scheme to put money into the pockets of speculators, let every family resolve to do with one fire less than usual, and in a very short time alt will be right. The miners talked cf suspending shi^ men's for a week to "easain the trade abroad." Let the people suspend purchases for two months, and the avaricious miners will soon be brought to terms ?Intelligencer. Coal is now selling at $* 25 per ton and up wards?exorbitant, indeed; but a remedy is suggested above that may cure the evil. Thb I .no* Qcard.?This new and spirited oorps is fast being erganned. Several of the ct-iioriLS are in the bands of the tailors, and some are finished. There was a fine oolleotion of animals, and agricultural and domestic productions Numbers visited the fair from this city, and they speak of tho exhibition in high terms of gratification. 8EQKGET0WH OOBBBSPOBDEHCB Ghorohtowh, September 15, 1864. We were visited yesterday with one of the most drenching rains we have had for many months. For some four or five hours, it poured down in perfect torrents, completely deluging ns. After the rain ceased, the sun came out bright and warm, and this morning the surrounding country seems to be rejoicing over tho general refreshing. As this raiu seems to have been general, we doubt not it will have other good effects than simply the watering of the parched earth and withered vegetation We think it will so far increase the quantity of water in our canal, as to en abla the navigation to be resumed, and thus allow a vast quantity of produco to find its way to market. It will also enable the mil lers to resume their suspended operations ; and aa the general drought (which prevented the manufacture of flour) has been assigned aa the principal reason why the price of flour with us, and in all the Atlantic cities, was from two to three dollars above the price in Liverpool and London, and no longer exists, we think it more than likely that the decline! whioh has already commenced, and which is so very desirable to every consumer who is not engaged in the trade, will continue until this indispensable article of food oomes down to its real value. We are led to this oonclu sion by the fact that it is now a settled matter that the newspaper reports of short crops, which caused so much alarm among the people generally, are in the main false, and that the prospect for an abundant crop of breadstulTs of every kind in Europe never waa better. With the almost unlimited bank facilities which our country affords, monopoly and spec ulation may run wild, and those engaged in it be enabled to control the markets to further their own interests for awhile; but when the fact becomes established, as it is in the present instance, that the supply is equal or superior to the demand, they must yield. We saw this faot demonstrated in the flour speculation of 1836 and 1837, and again in the memorable Steinberger cattle monopoly. And judging from the signs of tho times, we should think it prudent for those who have large quantities of breadatuffs on hand, to stand from under. We have requested several times to call tne attention of the property owners to the dilapi, dated condition of some parts of the foot-ways on High street. We hope those who are at fault in the matter will see to it, and remove the evil before tha return of winter. Our harbor for several days pa*t has pre sented quite a lively appearance. The num ber of large and small crafts loading and un loading being quite large. The offerings of beef cattle at Drover's Rest, for the week, have amounted to 500 head, 250 of wbich were sold to District butchers, at $2.37} a 3.62i, on the boof, equal to $4 75 a $7 25 nett. The balance were drove on to Bal timore. Old sheep and lambs, $2 50 a $3.50 per head L rder the late foreign and northern news, our flour and grain market has become very much depressed, and prices have considerably declined. During the last few days flour has declined from 50 to 75 cents per bbl., and wheat from 10 to 20 cents per bushel. During the week there has been sales of 5,000 to 10,000 bushels white corn at 82 cents. We hardly think, however, that that price cjuld be obtained for the article this morning. SPECTATOR.
