evening star. LOCAL ml* KLLIGENCE. Bespscttothe Mehortof Judge Crasch At a meeting of the members of the bar and the officers of the courts, held this morning, in the court room, on motion of Richard 3. Coze, Esq . John Marbury, Esq., was called to the chair, and John Smith, Esq., (clerk to the court,) appointed secretary. Mr Coxe said that they had assembled in consequence of an event, which, though long anticipated, had struck them with surprise. They had met to commemorate the life, vir tue*. and character of our deceased brother. Judge Craoch. He died at about the age of eighty six year?, after haying lived thus long as an individual, and having presided a long er period of time than he had ever heard of, on the bench?in a judicial capacity. He was appointed a Judge of the Circuit Court in Kirch. 1801, fifty-four years sinoe, and has now left us. His place is to bo supplied; but he might say a long time must elapse before hu p a:e can be supplied with so much ability and acceptance. Judge Cranch was a native of Massachu chusetts. and came to this city, he believed, in the year 1795 or 1796; and at once engaged in a great deal of active business, while he was ever respected for his talents. Having been appointed, in 1801, the junior judge of the cir cuit court, he was subsequently elevated to the position of chief justice of that court, and wa? likewise the judge of the district court. All who knew him in the course of their prac tice in th? courts, knew how well and admira bly he fulfilled all of the duties with which he va-> entrusted. Few judges ever excelled hiui; few ever equalled him in all the essentials which go to constitute the character of a great judge He was eminent for learning in all the departments of law?admiralty, chancery, criminal, common law. He was thoroughly imbued with the learning of the profession frwin the earliest days With regard to his personal character, no imputation ever rested jipon it, for his integ rity was never impugned. His faithfulness, bis impartiality, his urbanity of manner towaru those who practiced in the courts over which he presided ; his uncommon industry in prepar ing and pronouncing judgment after argument "had be-.Mi closed?-il all these he stood pre-em intnt; and although we have known judges possessing a larger extent of inquiry, he pos seted that necessary degree of inquiry which qualified him most admirably for the duties which devolved upon him. We hare met with a great loss; but, thank God ! he has left a bright example. We trust th.it every young man, while he reverences, will follow him?imitate Judge Cranch in in dustry. ard endeavor to equal him in learn in? ; be pure of heart as he was pure, honor able as he was honorable, so as to leave as pure and eminent a character for the admiration of his countrymen. With these views thus thrown out, and sat ilued thai he should have the hearty acqui quiescence of the gentlemen present, a com mittee was appointed, on his (Mr. Coxe's) v motion to draft appropriate resolutions, and to express the sense of the bar and the oiucers of the court relative to the sad event. The following named gentlemen were ap pointed by .he Chair to constitute the com mittee ? Messrs. R. S. Coxp, Reddin, J. H. Bradley. Carlisle and Ennis. Ihe committee retired, and, after about an boar's absence, returned, reporting, through Mr Coxe. a scries of resolutions, setting forth the eminent virtues of the deceased, and re ferring to his official character in terms of eulogy. Oue of thtm, in manifestation of the high respect entertained for th? late Judge Cracch. proposes that the members of the bar ax >i the officers of the court, wear the usual ba-i -e of mourning for thirty days, and, as a bnly, attend his funeral?which will take ^lacc to-morrvr afternoon, at four o'clock, lr iu his recent residence on Capitol Hill: and atr thcr resolution suggests to at, with the con ference of the family, a substantial and ap propriate monument be erected over thegrave of tae decessed. and t*?at a committee be ap pointed to carry the design into effect. Mr. Carlisle seconded the resolution?, and in doin* v> delivered a brief but eloquent eu logy. saying. in conclusion, that, for more than ball" a century, Judge Cranch took his place on the " ju igment seat" " void of offence to ward God and man." We are reluctantly compelled to abbreviate the proceedings, in order to preserve an out line of them in to-day's Star. Visiting Military.?The announcement of the contemplated visit to this city, on the 12'h instant, of the Fifty-third regiment of the Bal timore (Maryland) volunteers, recalls to (uf m:nd a similar visit made on that day nine teen years ago. At that time the city of Washington found itself in the sane condition that Louisville was at its late election on the first of the past month, namely: without a single volunteer militia company, to be called upon either for the public protection or to act ^ as an es.'ort. A number of companies had here been organised, but, after an existence of twelve or fifteen months, ceased to exist. Under these circumstances,, it was thought impossible to raise another; but a few enter prising individuals determined that the Balti mt reans should have at least one company to receive them ; so they sUrttd a list on tne 15tn of August, 1836. anil by the 26th of the same amth, having a sufficient number for that Cirpoee, met and organised the Washington ight Infantry, by electing as its captain John A Blake, and as lieutenants Richard France, W. H. Munro. and John Mills1; and which company paraded fifty men on the 12th of September, 1836, and joine 1 with the citisens on that day in extending a wcleome to the visiting military; performing all the escort and guard duty on tnat occasion ; on the 3d of June. l^O, Captain Blake resigned his com mand. and w;>3 succecdcd bv Richard France, who kft the company in May, 1846, and wjh? succeeded by Joseph 11 Tate, who resigned in November, 1853. E. C. Carrington was elected and acted as captain for a brief period, and on bi? resignation, James Y. Davis was elected to the ommand It is unnecessary to say anythin? in especial commendation of the infantry, further than that it was the nucleus arounl which has ral? lied a gallant regiment. Th* Late Elk Hcrr?WTe have recently learr.el ?oaie particulars of the elk hunt on Wed.isday night and Thursday last which will be read with no little intere.-t. Thus, it * siid that the animal, which aliv? was full fruruen hands h'gh, and weighed 5<K) pounds, had been missing from the premises of hte owner (Clark Mills) for many months. The hou-ids uf Mr. George Duval, not Mr. George Talburt as we erroneously stated in the Star . on Fnday last, started the game at about 3 a. 1 m. They were first heard in chase near tho ? l?*er bridge on the Maryland side, from W wheuce they ran to the neighborhood of the f Asylum, wh^re the chase doubled and ran ba*k through the larms of Mr. Talburt, Mrs Wociruff and the Union Land Association; ane then taking up the old Bladensburg road on the east siie of the 1'astern Branch until ne-ir Scagg s camp ground, it made down frcm thence for the water at the upper bridge, where there were a company of persons about to start up the marsh ortoian shooting. They joined in the chase, and the animal took to the water some d: <tance up. landing in safety, and the dogs pursuing him no further. The orto lan shooter*, however, pursued him in their skiffs, and coming within range of him on the ?dge of the marsh on Jcffci's land, shot him with repeated wounda. The game was, ot course, sold in.tbe city, as tlis huntsmen were professional men in that line. We can say of it tnat we never eat finer venison than it af forded upon the tables at Willard's and the Kirkwood House. St. Asdrkw's Sofi^Tr or M'ashiigto*.? The following gentlemen have been elected officers of this society, which has recently been organised : Gilbert Cameron, president; Willi! m Baliantyue and John Smith, vice J residents; Frederick D. Stuart, treasurer; ames McWilliams, secretary; Chas. Sword, Jas. Henderson, Jas. Anderson, Jas. Batcben, Win- R- Smith, and A. B. M'*Farlan, managers. Ml'Sic.?There was comparatively slim at tendance on Saturday evening at the Presi dent s Mouse grounds, to listen to the music of the Marine Band and to enjoy the delighful * promenade. The Band performed admirably r tlkiting the admiration of all listeners. 1 have no doubt every remedy which medical ecience oan fathom ha* been applied, in rome ca?s aWcesafully, and that now romedies are suggested every day for that appalling pesti lence, the yellow fever. Now, I wish to state a cue that was told to the mother of the writar by an old lady, whose husband waa in the lsut staee of the fever, when it raged in Philadelphia some twenty or thirty years since. When the physician began tola* hope, she thought she would try a remedy which suggested iiseu to ner; so sae uCUg-t ? peck of onions, sliaed them, and placed them around and over her husband. In half an hour, she removed them and placed fresh ones, and so continuing, the patient being unconscious and delinou*; about midnight the fever broke, and after awhiie the patient fell into a calm slurn ? ? V* next morning. when the physician called, be was astoniAcd. and said he really expfeited a very different change from what had taken place, and that her husband would recover, which he did. Another fact she stated that the onions turned green and loathsome, but she had du" a hole and buried them as fast as she removed them, which, I think, waa necessarv, as no doubt th? disease was in them. Now. the above is simple, but plausible, and would not, I think, interfere with any ether remedies now in use Tours, respectfully. Aug. 25, 1855. H B j CoLViniA Fire Company.?It was to be ex pected that the members of this association would give to the munificent lady. (Mrs. Pen dleton,) to whom they are so largely indebted, un appropriate greetings on her return from abroad. On Saturday evening this expecta tion was fulfilled m a manner alike worthy of themselves and their patroness. The welcome home was as grac?tful as it was cordial. In the tasteful and beautiful illumination, which made their hall, on Capitol Hill, a blase of light, and the exquisite music, more eloquent than any form of words, they paid a merited compliment to the lady, and illustrated by their example, in the mode of its manifesta tion, and in the feelings which prompted it, how true it is "that grateful mind* by owing owe not, but still pay at once indebted and discharged." i Cask.?On Friday last a case was laid before Justice Bates which attracted the attention of a large number of persons. It ap peared that some time since a oolored married woman, the mother of a small boy, was taken up as a lunatic and confined in Jail. Her hus band had the child under his care, but beine obliged to leavo the city, placed him with a colored family to take carc of. The uncle of the child, a respectablo slave man, had his doubts of the safety of the child's position, and determined to seo after him. The child had been sent after liquor by the guardians, and while on his errand met his uncle, who took him in his arms and was making off wifh him, but was overtaken by the opposite party, and a riotous scene occurred in the street! The justice, after hearing all the facts of the case decided to di?miss it, and discharged the parties. - Yocng Catholic Friends' Socif.tv. SrjfDAv Sport?Yesterday, a large number I of person*, m iry of tham from tliealjacent c untry, left the city completely supplied with guas, powder, shot, fishing tackle, bottles of ?' hot stuff,' Ac., to eiij'?y the Sabbath day in the marches and on the river. Ortolan, reed, anl blackbirds suffered some, and we are told that many of the sportsmen returned to the city suffering a little, having been '? shot in the neel*. ' Wo are glad to be able to state that nearly all of the " ohot" ones were stiangers in this city, and have left for home. Propbssor Espcta, who has been absent from the city for a year past, has returned to his 48 a mem^er ?f the Marine Band, and on Saturday last played with it on the Presi dent s grounds, sounding, as heretofore, his briiliant notes on the Saxe horn, on which in strument he has no superior. We learn that it is the intention of this gentleman to form a Srivate brass band, like that heretofore con noted by him, and with which the lovers ( f dancing and night serenades were so much de lighted. With such unquestionable endorsements, we think that those who are afflicted, and yet fail to try this remedy, deserve to suffer. Capt.
