In the Dutch town of M , there resided at the close of the last centnry, an aged wid ow known by the name of Madame Andrecht The only occupants of the house which was the widow's property, were herself and a maid servant of abcut the same age. As the widow was in a precarious stat? of health, she kept no society, and did not leave her room for weeks together, ller only recreation wag, that she went in the spring, when the weather wa* settled, to visit her son, who resided in a neighboring village, and on these excursions she was always accompanied by her servant, who was accustomed to her temper, and w.is the only nurse she would hare about her. During these absences from town tho house was uninhabited, and though carefi^ly lock ed up, not guarded with any special atteL tion. The widow returned from her annual ex cursion on the 30th of June. IB?, and found that during her absence the house had been broken into, and besides other valuables, all her plate and jewels carried off. The author ities were immediately informed, and both burgomaster and police beg tn to make a dili gent inquiry It was not difficult to discover how the thieves had broken into the house The window of a back room looked on the garden, and had been secured within by a brass screw on either bide A pane of glass had been broken on each side, the screws had been taken out, and thej had carried off their plunder by the back door, which wa* found unfastened. All the other windows were still securcly bolted, and several rooms had not even been entered. It was evident that the thieves had set to work in great security, had taken their time, an 1 had not been appre hensive of being disturbed. They had re moved the top of a heavy old escritoire, which had been carefully locked, and bad lifted out the doors This operation had boen effected so cleverly that there was not the slightest trace of violence Out of this escritoire the jewels and other valuables had been taken Two chests had also been broken open, and gold, silver, and apparel carried off The value of the objects missed amounted to about 2 000 Dutch florins. It was conjectured that the robbery bad been effected by uce than one person; it was equally probable that the plan had been ma tured long before It was also apparent that the robbery had been committed by persons not unaccquainted with the house and the widow's circumstances The widow's house was situated in an outlying street, and was the only respectable one in the neighborhood Persons in inferior circumstances, and among them several suspicious characters occupied the 8djacenfhou8es. At the end of the gar den, behind the house, from which side the thieves must have come, ran the inner town ditch, which was navigable and only divided from it by a quickset hedge. The next house was a corner one, and a narrow path ran along its side and the garden hedge to a plank laid across the ditch. It was not supposed, how ever, that the thieves had climbed over the hedges of the two gardens, but it was much more likely that they had come in a boat to the hedge and climbed over it. No suspicious footsteps could be noticed in the garden walks or flower beds The discovery immediately caused great ex citement, tho whole neighborhood was astir, and a mob of curious persons surrounded the house. The police were compelled to use their utmost efforts to prevent them entering : still one of them, a baker, who lived in the house right opposite the window, had succeeded in finding his way in with the offioera. and satis fying his curiosity His acquaintances, who had seen him enter, awaited his return with impatience to learn from him all that the po lice would not import to them. Their hopes were deceived, however, for be maintained an obstinate silence, or only gave equivocal replies. A wool-spinner. Leendert Van N?, w!.o lived in the comer house, was far more talkative. Wherever people put their heads together, he hurried up to them, listened to their conjsctures, and favcred them with his own ; he sroke too, in a very decided manner, and hinted at certain persons and things, llie wife did the same among her neighbors in a louder key. She shook her head at one thicg, nodded at another, and repeatedly said she wonld not be surprised if the thieves were car ried to prison before night Among the mob which her husband was honoring with bis re marks, was a Jew pedlar, who was constantly visible iu the streets with his wares. An. ac quaintance twitched the wool spinner by the bleeve, and whispered to him that he had bet ter be cautious, for the Jew was a spy The warning came too late. The same morning the wool spinner was summoned to the town house, to give the burgomaster an explana tion of his suspicious remarks. He hesitated, denied and tried to evade the question, but when the burgomaster pressed him, he deter mined on speaking, though he would gladly have saved the persons, who had never done him any injury At the end of tho street in which the wool spinner lived, a public-house bad been opened for several years, kopt by a eertain Nicholas I)?. The people if the town, however, rarely called him by his name, but only spoke of him as the " Blue Dragoon," as he had formerly served in Colonel Von Wakebaith's regiment, whose uniform was of this color. When gar risoned in the town some years before, he had made the acquaintance of Madame Andrecht" a former maid, Hanne, whom he o?entua!ly married The girl had been six years in tho widow s eervice, and possessed her entire con fidence. As far as was known the eld lady had given them tho mear.s to open the publio houce, for neither of them had anything. It was also known that Hanne and her Blue Dragoon, as long as they were unmarried, had had few opportunities of meeting Conse quently Hanne waited, when her mistress had Jone to bed, at the house door, and the Blue ? ragoon never failed to make his appearance If the weather was fair, they would remain talking there, if bad, Hanne took the liberty of inviting her lover into the house. This did not long remain hidden from the old lady, and she did not approve of it; and she there fore had the street door locked each night be fore going to bed, and took the keys with her. The lovers, however, were not balked by this; the Blue Dragoon sought a road through the wool-spinner's gardsn One evening the lat ter heard the clang of spurs; he went to the back door hurriedly with a light, and saw Nicholas climbing over tho fence of Madame Andrecht's garden. He did not make any distdtbance, for he knew of the love affair, and the Blue Dragoon told him laughingly, that he was going to bid his Hanno good night. When, however, the thing went on, and Blue Dragoon climbed over night after night, he put a stop to it The Blue Dragoon did not climb over any more, yet the wool-spinner saw him in t\e garden with his Hanne The enigma was solved one evening when he came home very late, and saw a boat fastened to a post close to Madame Andrecht's garden It was one of them in which the dragoons usually fetched their fodder from the st res, and Nieholas wai at that time servant to one of the officers, and attended to his horse Man and wife laughed heartily at the idea that love will always find away; and they frequently saw the boat after that under the hedge. Such was the wool spinner 8 explanations of the motives whioh formed the loundation of his suspicions He found, however, more nourishment for them in faots that had recently como to his knowl edge. 8oineten days before the discovery of the robbery, while the widow was still in the oountry, he bad found aoolored pocket hand kerchief at the side of the town ditch, close to his neighbor's garden. He put it in his pocket without thinking any thing .pboat it. When the spirice had been once carried heme, this re ceipt was of no furti er ufe, ana the papers were not generally preserved by the landlords The greater portion of the receipt found in the house was burnt, the name of the landlord was gone, but the lower part was in good con dition, and upon it was the signature of tho exciseman and the date! It wat easy w,th theae indications, to find out what laudlord had declared spirits oa that day. The bo->ks showed that Nicholas D had received maay kegs of tieaeva This, in connection with the wool spinner's statement, determined vbe police to arrest the Blue Dragoon, as well a.< bis family, eoniisting of his wile, her latltr and brother, who lived with him. Ac exami catioa of the house led to the discovery of a ."souvenir" behiad the shutter of the tap-r>om window, which undoubtedly belonged to Mad ame Aadrecht, tor two letters addressed to h r were found in it. While the whole town was busying itself in terming conjectures on the eut ject, a respect able tradesman made his appear .?ace before the police and gave ihe following statemeat : He was a wool merchant, and am,eg hit rc? totnera was a carpenter, ^aacVanC . who was alwajs in arrear with his payments I be merchant pressed him, and at length com menced legal proceedings A few days be fore the discovery of the robbery the carpen ter came to his house and begged hiau no' to proceed further, or he should be a ruined man "See how I am paid !" he exclaimed, as he placed a basket oa the table and pro dueed from it a pair of silver candlesticks and a coffee pot ? I had sixty florins to re ceive ot a party, but he begged me to take this silver in pnrt payment, and I did so. as I Siw I should cot get my money in acy other way. 1 did cot like to sell it to the tiver sauhs here, as I should cot get haif the valse, but waiteS till 1 wect to Amsu-rd tm where I could dispose of them. I will leave the silver in pledge with you till I receive my money." The wood merchant hesitated at first, but at length consented. The tilver was in my hands. Whin he heard of the robbery at Madame Andrecht's and read the list <.f things stolen; he had no doubt, that those ob jects formed part of them lie did not wish to throw any suspicion on the carpenter, he ?ou!d co doubt explain whence he obtainod them, and he was surprised he had not d no so alteady. to prove the landlord s guilt or in nocence. The police immediately sent for the silver and the carpenter, Isaac Van C The carpenter arrived breathlessly, lie seemed perfectly prepared, and before they proceeded to question him, he volunteered the following statement: He had been pressed by the wood merchant, and wm eorteuuently forced to press bis debtors. Among them wii Nicholas D , who owed him aixty florins for work done in his house. Nieholaa had coma to him some twelve days before and begged him to wait a little longer When the car penter declared it was impossible, he had of fered him some old silver in part payment. The carpenter suspected nothing wrong, t.ut asked him accidentally how he had got it ? The Blue Dragoon replied that it had be longed to his tather in law, to whom it had been left by an old lady, wh'*e eoachmsn he had been for several years They ngreed that it should ba taken for a certain price, and the landlord brought it to him the same evet-iLg in a covered basket! At the came time fco requested him not to dispose of it in the town for he would only get halt its value; bad be sides, he, tho landlord, had reasons for d^sir Icg it. The Bice Dragoon was bow examined; a^d his statement taiiied with that of the carpen ter to a certain exteat He allowed that ho owed him sixty florics, but he ha l Let vei beea able to pay him any part. He, how ever, denied any knowledge of the silver Ihe rest of the tamily made the s.*mo state meat, but all dcclarcd that Nicholas hsd, la their preseace. three mccths previous'y, couated out twenty florins, which, he siid were latended for the earpecter The Blue Dragoon, on further examination, coafo^d that this was the fact, but he bad used tho money to pay some old gambling debts, aad that he had told his wife he intended thein for the carpectcr This was the first instance in whioh any of the accusod uid been convicted of a falsehood; and, although it reicrnd to an immaterial circnmstance, it threw an unfavor able light on their other statements, and hit atsurracce that he had paid the carpenter no part of the debt by ueai:s of the silver, found no credence The carpenter, moreover, diJ cot rest in his endeavor to convict the landlord of falsehood; be produced a species of ledger, iu which an entry was made that, on the 2dl Juce, the landlord, Nicholas D , had p*id thirty florins oa acce unt in old silver The car penter's housekeeper and apprentice both gave their testimony that they were present when the Blue Drag- on had spokec wim their master on the subject, and swore to the ttuth of the statement. In consideration of all this, acd as the landlord persisted in aa<-erticg his innocence, the authorities determined to bring him to confess by means of torture. All pre parations were made, and the torture would be applied the followicg day. when a letter reached the authorities by the Rotterdam pos' " Before I quit the couctry, acd reach a i-pot where ceuher the authorities of M nor the oourt-martial can tcuch me 1 will save fjur innocent persons who are cow imprisoned in M Care must be taken not to puaisu them for a crime of which they cannot be guilty How the carpenter ia connected with them I cannot corjecture. and I heard of it with great surprise.
