F.!lett?s Heet I met :he steamer F.mrna Duncan, Acting Master Griswold commanding, comiue up to report his ve s 1 tor duty. Learning ihat he had been sitae'-fei by a held battery at Green Bottom Il.ir, and had tliree i^ien badly wounded, I pro ceeded on down ihe river, giving him orders io follow me. in hopes of catching the rebels at or near the same place. I passed the bar about dusk in the evening, but the enemy was nowhere to be seen. ==:- =? Ariiving at the fort ot Green Bottom Bar abom midnight, I anchored "til morning. Still seeing nothiug of the euetay, I procee led on lip the liver, to meet and commuunate with eneral Filet. ? Th- Emma Duncan remaining nearly a mile in my rear, cannrlit a ferry Hat coming out cf a creek after 1 had passed. The gtieiillas in the flat jumped out and mads their escape in the wootiis. The flat, however was destroyed aud . et adrift. I cruised up leisurely, keeping a good lookout for the enemy along the rijrht bank, but saw no signs of them "til I arrived ai Dark Fi\tr shoals, when I heard musketry ar.d artillery a short distance (not a mile) aaead. I pushed on over the bar, and mot Gen. F.Ilet's fleer just at the head of the shoals, c-rtgagir.g the rebel battery. I was then in eood ranze. and at once opened fire on the e:i eray. There was not room lor his boats to round to or to back out ot the channel: he was therefore compelled to push ou over the bar before he could effect a landing. I took the battery side and moved on np to cover his boats as much us possible, at the same time raking the bank with our heavy guns. Th? ram Monarch by this time came in range ar.d opened J*re also. A? soon us 1 rounded the point the enemy fired a farewell shot at one of the brigade boats, timbered up and were off. Some few sharp shooters', remaining behind, fired a few shots at a transport havingon board sick and wonnd ed. I followed on up the bank, thro win a: shells alter them till I thought them out of range and ceased firing. By this time Gen. Ellet had landed and was pursuing them. Several of the enemy were found dead on the bank, and many more were dragged oil in the ?woods. I should suppose that their loss in killed and wounded is about 25 or *v>. 1 believe General Ellet lost two - lied and won: ded on his boats: also some horses kdled About i p. m. I left Gen. Ellet at the foot ot the bar. and proceeded on up the river, with this boa* and the Emma Duncan, to commu nicate v iih the fleet above. Cincisxati, May 22.?Information received here lroia Gen. Grant's headquarters, at Ray mond, Miss., shows that it was liis intention to destroy all the bridges. After the capture of Jackson he ceased communication with Grand Gulf, in consequence of heavy escorts of troops being neceaaarv lor such service. The army was provided with rations for eight days. From Jackson, Gen. Grant was to proceed to Haines' Hlull and secure a number of trans ports belonging to the rebels, and prevent their etcape up theYtfzoo. Pemberton is thought to be in front of Grant, and Johnson is supposed to have brought but five thousand troops with him. It is generally supposed a p;rcat battle would be fought before Vicksburg surrendered. The bridge o\er the Big Mack had not been destroyed, but it is guarded by five thousand men, with instructions to destroy it if they should be compelled to leave. Three miles of railroad, near Jackson, were torn up when our lorces entered that city. ? NEW PLAN OF ATTAt K I PON CHARLESTON. Our Forces Drive the Rebels oil Morris l?lau<l. T?T The Rebel papers publish a rumor, said to have come via Pascagoula irom New Or leans, that the Hartford had been burned by AdmiralFarragntaiu-rhaving been "stopped," by Rebel batteries we presume is meant, at sume point not stated. We attach no credence to the report. The only Rebel batteries capa ble of "stopping'' the Hartford are those at Port Hudson. Had she been bnrnt there the Rebels would have had direct intelligence of ihe fact. A probable explanation is that the ar rival ot Admiral Farragutat New Or lean - had given rite to the rumor among the disloyal then and ihat ii was carried across Lake Pon chartarin to Pascagoula before rhe real facts were ascertained. fcy-The Mobile Hcg. ittr of the IGth inst. is in formed that a new British Consul is on his way to Mobil , and savagely demands that his presence be noi tolerated. Pan Te'm i*or. r??This i .ornin; Mr. l>ean wfn' to the Provost Marshal'* ortice, and alter the boy Hall had been brought before Major Sher burne, Mr. D. said be would ask his discharge, and demanded for him a military protection, and at. the ttrnw time asked whether auv writ or proems had been served upon him (Major S.1! by 'he civil authorities. The Major replied that if there had he should nor have recognized it. ' Mr. Dean then asked lor military protection, which was handed to him: when ue began to ask the boy questions, as: how lone he hart v orked fjr the Government: what y>av he had received: and where he was arrested; and also what he wanted to do now: when the i?oy said h* wanted to be free. While Mr. Dean was thus addressing Hall, Marshal Lamoa came in and took a seat, when TJeau inquired if lie had a process. The Marshal replied that he had a paper in hi- hard rrlattye to the case, but he did not coiiie to sei\e it himself. He merely came there as an officer of the court, to inform the military authorities that Mr. Waiter s. Cox<* had been npi>ointed by Judges Uartter, Fisher, and Wylie, a commissioner undar th? fugitive slave law. The warrant was directed for service to Mr. Joseph S. Worthington, who wa? here introduced. Mr. Dean said he was surprised that any appointment had been made under the Fugitive Slave act. This matter must be brought again to the attention of the Court. Marshal La men suggested that obedience to the warrant would bring the matter up on a habeas corpus. Mr. Dean did not see how a commissioner could be appointed, when the slave law did not apply to the District, and he hoped Judge Sherburne would not reeognixe the warrant. He (Mr. Dean* had a right to deny entirely the right of the commissioner to issue the warrant after the fugitive had been once released. Mr. Laraon said he had done what he came there for, viz: to inform the military authori ties of the appointment of the commissioner, and that was all he had to do with the mati'jr. Mr. Dean then addressing Major Sherburne as " Judge,'' and "your honor," "?fcc., demanded that die negro be remanded to the custody of the military guard, and there retained until Monday at 10 o'clock, when lie would lia\ethe ca?-e brought up again: and in I ho mean time would find out when Mr. Coxe had been ap pointed commissioner. But he did not want the boy to lay in jail any longer. Mr. Dean then lectured the boy how to act and told him not to attempt to run away from the soldier, and turning to Mr. Worthington, he said the boj- was under miBtary protection and he would allow no process. He did not want to see again such a row as was attempted at the City Hall yesterday. After a short interview with Marshal Lamon, Major S. returned and handing the warrant back 10 Mr. Worthington, remarked, the boy was in military custody and therelorp the war rant eould not be recognized. He would send the bo.v to the Contraband Camp. Mr. Dean said that he proposed on Monday mining to present this matter again, and if the Court decided that the law* of IS.?.' applied to this District, he, as a law-abiding citizen, would surrender. He proposed to make this a te--t case. Mr. Dean was very much concerned lest Mr. Worthington should attempt to arres the boy alter he had been sent to the camp and wis not under immediate military control. Mr. Worthington said he would do nothing to bring on a clash between the military and civil au thorities. CitiMiNA!. Court.?
