vHl and favorably known as one ot the most
prominent members of Mr. G rover's line stock
company, will to-night take a benefit. This is
the only benefit Mr. B has been tendered this

tuily they appreciate his talents and efforts.

Widow's Victim.

The < a?e oi >lr*. fctnily Wiley, versus
Marshall Brown.
CiitrrtT COURT?Chief Justice Crrtter.
Alter our report closed yesterday, the cuiin
srl for Mrs. W. read a number ol letters, which
were admitted as evidence, written by Mrs.
Wiley, then ^Iiss Brown. Mrs. Brown. Tho?.
C. Bell, principal of the Newark (Del.) School,
Miss Bell and others, dated during the years
Ml, '42, '43 and '44. The letters of Mrs. W.
?w ere addressed " Dear father," and those
ol the others speak ol her as the child of Mr.
Brown. Mrs. Brown's letters are addressed
to her "dear daughter," and generally close
with "Your father joins me in love to you;"
aad one contains a postscript in Mr. B.'s wri
ting.
T^.e counsel for Mrs. WTiley here closed; and
Mr. Bradley, on opening the case for the I
defense, stated what he expected to prove by
respectable witnesses; that he would show that
Colonel Larned took Mrs. Brown in a hack to
Mrs. Podd's: that she passed as his niece in
that house; that 3he visited a house ol' ill-fame
while in Baltimore: that Mr. T. P. Browu
:,ever darkened the threshold of the house of
Ann Simms or Mrs. Weeden; that in Baltimore
.,he passed as Elizabeth Reed; that she lived on
B st'ieet nearly two years, and during that time
Mr. Brown never darkened the door; that she
was the mistress of Mr. Brown; that in 1839,
v. hen Emily was four years old, she introduced
Mr. Brown for the first time as her new beau:
when the child Georgianadied, he would show
that the date of the birth and death and burial
ol the child was furnished to Mr. Donn by Mrs
Brown, and by his direction a stone cutter was
employed to put the inscription on the stone;
that she had declared that Mr. T. P. Brown
was not the lather of thfe child: that he would
prove that at the tinte Mr. Brown was visiting
her, he was at a boarding school in another
city; that he would prove by Mr. Brown's own
statement that he was not the lather of the child;
that the marriage announcement of John Wiley
and Emily Brown, was that Emily was the
daughter of Elizabeth Brown; thai when the
remains ol Georgiana were removed from the
Congressional Burying Ground, a new inscrip
tion was put upon the tombstone, and the name
cf Tillotson P. Brown was not upon it; that of
"Elizabeth Brown was.
Capt. Georje Wilson, sworn.?Witness resides
in Baltimore. In the winter of 1832 or '33 Liz
zie Phillips was stopping at Peacock's, in Bal
timore. as a chambermaid.
Mani Simms, a woman who has evidently
been one of the fast ones, was sworn, and tes
tified that she has known Mrs. Brown 25 or 30
vears; that she came to board at witness's sis
ter's, on the avenue.
Mr. Brent objected, on the ground that the
testimony was purely collateral, and did not
relate to" the paternity of the child nor affect
the credit ol Mrs. Brown as a witness. He
argued the point, citing authorities, and in the
course thereof admitted that the evidence of
Mrs. Brown had negatived the idea of a mar
riage between her and Mr. B. until January,
135S?, and proved that prior thereto there was
only a promise of marriage at som-> future
dine' Therefore the proposed evidence was
not admissible to rebut a marriage at a period
when it was not claimed, and there was no
other purpose lor which it could be legally
admitted.
The Court decided that it was not admissible
on the question ol paternity of the child, but
was admissible to negative the idea of a mar
t iage d' facto at the time.
She came to the house in a stage from Balti
more, with a man who she said was Col.
Larr.ed, but witness never saw him. She
passed under the name of Lizzie Head. Wit
ness does not remember what year it was
when she arrived. Witness is certain that the
man was not Tilletson Brown, who .-he kr.ew
as well as the did herself. She never saw
Tillotson Brown at her sister's house, but had
Sfen him in another houses and on the street.
Jshe thought at the time that Col. Larned was
a married man and did not wish to be seen, as
tie kept himself close. Every man who goes
to such houses does not wish to b? known.
Mrs. Brown staid at witness' sister's house
iwo davs and left, but she does not know
where she went to. At the time she left she
was 'nciente.
Mrs. fiarah McOann.?Witness resides in New
York, and knows Mrs. Brown, who she be- ;
came acquainted with in 1S;}6. She was then
living in a house on B street, near the old de
pot; there were two small bricks adjoining.
Witpess stopped at Mrs. B.'s from the fall of
"*;d to the following spring, and returned the
iollow ing lull, stopping until the spring of '38.
r^he stopped at the house a short time about a
year afterwards while on her way to South
Carolina. Witness was quite intimate with
Mrs B., and she was often in her room. Mrs.
B. had two children, one of whom died in '37.
In speaking of the children Mrs. B. said that
the one who died was the c*iildol John White,
ol Kentuckv: and of the other (Emily) as the
child of Dr. Miller, of Baltimore. Witness first
saw Tillottson Browu at the house of Mrs. B.
if "JJ, and Mrs. B. spoke of him as her new
beau.
By Mr. Brent.?Witness is now married and
Tesfdes in New Y'ork, where she is living an
honest, virtuous life. She was not married
when she first became acquainted with Mrs.
B, and if she had beer ehe would not have
gone to her house. She was married to Mr.
McGann about two years since. McG, at the
time she stopped at Mrs. Brown's, boarded at
the hotel. Mrs. B. was passing under her
present uame at that time. Mrs. B. in '36 was
nursing her babe, and was a truly devoted
mother. On certain nights a gentleman would
.stop with Mrs. B., who she said was Mr.
White. Witness thought that Mrs. B. set great
store by the child, because it was Mr. White's,
and appeared to think that he would do some
thing for her. Mr. W. w J the Speaker of the
House of Representatives at the tune. One ol
the children was called Georgianna White, and
the other, who she said was Dr. Miller's, "Lit
tle Ellen." Witness saw Dr. Miller In Balti
more aiterwards. and, on looking at him, saw
a resemblance between the two, and thought i
that he should adopt the child. Witness never
.saw Mr. Hardin, but has heard Mrs. B. say
that she supposed he had left her because she
lookup with White. Witness was sorry to
say that she (witness) had deceived the world;
but she was x.ow moving in good society, and
her adopted daughter, who was with her at Mrs.
'g jilsO
Mri. Deborah Griggiby.?Witness' maiden name
was Easton, but she is now married and trying
to live a virtuous life. She did not recollect
that Tillotson Brown in '3C and '37 was a con
stant visitor to Mrs. Brown's; could not say
that he had a female friend he visited con
stantly. He visited her house sometimes. She
Had understood that he visited Mrs. Brown.
Mr. B. and witness had a personal difficulty
once, but it wjis not concerning Mrs. Bi^owu.
Another Mi;eder.?Yesterday afternoon
another murder was committed in the northern
tection ol the city. It appears that about ?3Y<?n
o'clock three soldiers belonging to company E,
13th New York cavalry, passed up Seventh 1
street, and stopped at George Esher'6 lager 1
beer saloon, on i^evunth street between M and j
N, where they had a quarrel, one of them !
refusing to r?-turn with his companions to the !
camp; and when on the pavement in front of !
the house Michael Cotneford drew his revolver
and tired four shots, the first passing through
the lower portion of the deceased's (Phillip
Riley's) unilorm; the second between his legs,
fctril.mg Mr. Kidley, a nuighbo: who was near
by, in the loot; and the third the deceased, in
the right breast, about three inches from the
< ollar bone. The deceased, who had by this
tune fallen, threw up bis bauds, exclaiming,
? 'My God, I am shot!' and d-ed in a few
moments Coineford immediately walked off,
but w as arrested by officer Cook, who happened
to be near bv, and taken to the Third V ard
t? ation. On "the way down the prisoner said
that if he had not killed Riley he was sorry for
it, as he had done his best to kill him; and he
-was willing to take the consequences. He
declared that Riley had repeatedly slapped
him in the face. Both the parties are Irish
men and fine looking men. Shortly after the
ocouirencce Justice John H. Goddard sum
moned a inrv of inquest, which was after
ward taken "charge ol by the Coroaer, and .
aXvec hearing the ?vidonoe a verdict was |
returned that thi? deceased came to bis death
from a wound by the hands ol Michael Oome
ford. The prisoner was takeu before Justice
Thompson, and committed to jail for a hear
ing.
A Sol:>ikr Shot ht a Guabd. Yestrrday
morning, a sergeant (whose name we could not
learn) ot tbeTth regiment Michigan volunteers,
whose camp is about a mile and a half from Oo
lurahian College, came tu the camp of tne 1st
Rhode Island cavalry (which is at the college)
while iu a state of intoxication, and went to the
officers" parade and insulted Lieut. Prentiss.
The latter reported the fact to the officer of the
day, (Capt. Geo. Rhodes. and asked that the
man should l?e put in the guard-house. Capt.
Rhodes went to the Michigan soldier and asked
him to leave the camp, when the latter became
very iDsulting; said be would not leave, and
that he could thrash any officer or any twenty
men in the camp, when Capt. Rhodes called
the guard and ordered the sergeant's arrest.
The sergeant then defied the guard to take him,
and running towards Capt. Rhodes pulled the
sword of the latter from its sheath, and made a
pass with it at Capt. R., the sword piercing his
coat, vest and undershirt. The sergeant of the
guard was also struck with the sword while
attempting to in:tke the arrest; and Captain
Rhodes, seeing no other way of quelling the
disorder, ordered the guard to shoot, which
order w as obeyed by the corporal of the guard,
v. ho shot the disorderly soldier, the ball enter
ing the body jnst below the heart. The
wounded man was conveyed to Columbian
Hospital, where the services of medical men
were secured: and at last accounts he was
nlive, and gave evidence of recovery.
When the wounded man became sensible, he
justified the shooting, and said that, had he
been in charge of the guard, he would hare
acted in a similar manner.
Military Mkktinos. ?The President's
Mounted Guard is in the field again. On last
night they bad a spirited meeting, and twenty
nine new members were received. They hold

seen that the George C. Thomas 8-uard? offer
extra inducements for enlistment. The ranks
will doubtless fill np speedily.
The veteran National Guards, it will be seen,
hold a meeting to-night, as doubtless will other
city companies. The military spirit is rapidly
mounting to the pitch it reached when the call
for three months men was so promptly an
swered in this- city.
