Piratical Exploits on James River

pirutital capture of the tug Lizzie Kreeman
while anchored oil the mouth of Warwick
river, as heretofore reported, on Monday night,
the mate of the tug, Mr. William Spiel, was
severely wounded in the shoulder, and one of
the colored soldiers acting as guard on the
barge Zimmerman, which the tug: had in tow,
was shot down in cold blood, and two others
dangerously wounded, although they oflered
no resistance. The passengers and crew of
both the tug and schoonrs were rebbedof their
clothing and valuables, and confined in the
hold of the barge wi'b tbe batches clc ? >d down
for several hours. The steamer Matilc i, pass
ing the spot next morning, released them from
their unpleasant situation, and conveyed them
to Norfolk, Va.

last night at a late hour, reported having see

The increase of crime in this city has been of
so marked a character as to excite the attention
even of the authorities recorder Hoffman, in
his charge to the Grand Jury on Monday, al
luded to the nnprom sing fact, and stated that
one hundred and thi ty men are now in prison
awai'ing indictmeptfor trial. During the past
month the record of metropolitan crime baa
been simply hide job. All manner of latamy,
all grades at brutality?in short the whote ga

The United States Grand Jury have indicted
Isaac Henderson late Navy Agent, for alleged
malversations while holding that position. Mr,
Hendeison s friends still appear to be confident
of his vindication when the case will be sub
mitted for trial. Mr. Henderson is likewise de
fendant in a civil suit for $128.800,'i!), brought
bv Joseph L Savage, a Government contrac
tor, the '-ame gentleman upon whose represen
tations Mr. Henderson was deprived of bU
office and arrested upon tbe above charges.
Jndf;? Russell, in view of tbe recent mania
for robbery and assault, has publicly declared
his intention to visit upon every offender
convicted before him of robbery with danger
ous weapons the fullest penalty of tbe law. A
short time ago he sentenced one ot the rascals
to imprisonment lor twenty yeais and sis
months.
Judge Cardozo has denied the motion for tne
