In the Circuit Court of the District of Colum
bia, February tcTin, I-?*??, Patrick Knox and
wife vs. Jeremiah Sheahan and wife. Tbis
a? tion was bronght to recover damages for the
following word? spoken by Mrs. Sheahan of
and concerning Mrs. Knox, to wit:?" She (i. e.
Mrs. ? ? ox ) is a prostitute, and keeps a bawdy
bonae," Ac Tbe defendants, by tbeir plea, de
El? d tbe use of the Manderons words charged
as above in tbe declaration. The parties being
in court and about to proceed to trial, with a
large number of witnesses on both sides, a
compromise was proposed and accepted,
whereby Mrs. Sbeaban signed a paper, wbich
was tiled with the papers in the cause, in
which she retract?d all and everything she
ever said derogatory to the character of Mrs.
Kinn fir chastity, and stated that she knew
notblng derogatory to her character for chas
tity, and that if she had ever said anything
derogatory to her character for chastity, she
did not recollect lt, and did not mean it, Ac.
And tbe defendants paid tbe costs of the suit,
and the same was then ???missed. M. Thomp
