Cooke varied his usual dinner to Uxe Correspondent!' Clufc. of which ho to an honorary member, by a press excursion down river, which, however, included half a dozen bosquets on the ste&mer and sft tllymont. as bis magnificent hospitalities were entered upon from the moment that the boat loft the wharf and kept up until it returned, with a thoughtfulnes" and profusion that left no wast or desire unfilled. Most or the newspaper men of Washington and the representatives in Washington of the press of the country were of the party and also a number of prominent gen tlemen of the city, not connects.'! with the press. The newspaper men, just set free from the tread-mill work of the session, were in the mood lor a lark, and the cltixens along, released f->r a day from the cares of bust noes, were quite in the mood to "assist," and it is probable that aboalas much good humored fan was enacted on thii- pleasant trip a.? was erer witnessed in the aa?e length of time. There were mock trials, rope-hauling*, vocal music ad libitum, instrumental music (by Weber's band) to fill in the chinks, speech-making of the fcve-minutes? *ort,( for reporters and correspondents suffer too mnch from long speeches to tolerate tkera on fes tal occasion.) and dancing of o style of dash and brilliancy needing to be seen to be appreciated. The performAi.es of the Laneitrt at the pavilion by the very heftiest of Washington's renowned Heavy A. I>ra*o*rj< was a sight to see. The emulation as to who should mount the highest ond stay up the kougest was very animated be tween Messrs. Geo-OMeon, B. B. French, Major Poore, Col. Tom Florence. O. W. Adams. H. ??. Kamsdell. E. P. Brooks ajid G. A. Basse It. Mr. iiideon won by several seconds and thirty or forty feet. At the brilliant dinner at the pavilion there was some good off-hand speech making by Messra. CooEe, French, Gobrigbt. Barr. Hunt ington, Florence, A. K. Shepherd. Hallet Kil burn. and Curtis ^ad luterim), of Georgetown. The party then embarked for the return, and tbe Jofiitj and larking of the down trip was re1 entered upon. As else* here, the prevailing topic was the war m Fnrope, and the sympathies or the press were shown to be quite unmistakably on the side of Prussia. There were Impassioned speeches by Kmperor Napoleon. Minister Olllvier, Count Beneditti, Bismarck. King William of Prussia, John B.trocgh. Mr. Toodles, and other*. The weight of argument and evidence was unmis takably that Napoleon was the aggressor. The unseemly imperUsance of Prince Beneditti in interrupting King William at the critical mo ment when his msjMfwav hazarding the expe riment of swallowing a mouthful of water was denounced in fitting terms; and it was conceded that an ambassador who could tritie with roy alty at such a solemn and trying period deserved to be sent back to Paris with a flea in hid ear, at tbe risk of universal war. All the patriotic songsof Germany and France were sung in turn, quite impartially, assisted by the band, and when, as sometimes happened, the band was rather too strong for the vocalists, the latter slyly equalized matters by stuffing their bandkerchiels down the big ends of the brass Instruments. It had a wonderfully sedative effect on the braes-horns and things; and the surprise of the players was considerable, espe eialy as the obstructions were whJked away oodetected as often as examination was made. Time fled quickly, and tbe eltv clocks struck twelve as the "teamer approached the wharf on her return, telling that it was Sunday morning. There was an instant stop to the galetv of course tn respect to the hour, and Major Poore, who was relating with immense effect a story apropos to the war, about Prof. Groux and Napoleon the Great, at Waterloo, closed with such ab ruptness iust as he had reached the nib of the tale that to this hour it is not known what the Km per or was about to say to the little Groux at the battle of Waterloo: Tin iMT'Rr.VKvrjrr of M strkbt? The com missioners having charge of the work for im i?ro\in? Thi Hottest ?Yesterday was by odds tbe hottest day of tbe season so far. At the corner of M and 12th streets the highest point reached by the mercury was 93? In the shade, but in other parts of the city it ranged from thoee figures up to 102. according to situation. Ad vices from other places indicate that the excee sive beat vat not confined to this locality. The present term seem* to be as widely extended as it is severe. There -were seven deaths from the heat in Bal timore yesterday, and the thermometer stood at in the shade. The thermometer, to-dav, at Hempler's, opti cian . corner 4? street and Pennsylvania avenue, stood, at 9a. m.. >V: at 10 a. m.. 90"; at 12 m., w. ?? p. m , 96?. At 2% o'clock there was a fal! to 90? in consequence of the storm. ? The party, which was remarkably orderly and well disposed, was made up mainly of tbe members of the Duke Street A. M. E. Fay H. Purdy, of New York, was holding spell-bound an audience far too large to be accommodated within the limits of the tent. Mr. Purdy Is a sharp two-edged sword, and woe be unto the faithless professor of religion who falls into his hands. Rev. B. Pomeroy, the author of "Shocks from the Battery,"arrived yesterday afternoon, and delivered a characteristic address at the preachers' meeting at six o'clock. He is a spirit ual electric battery. Rev. Piersoll Smith, of the Presbyterian Church of Boston, we believe, Src ached laat night from Romans vl, 4. Rev. Ir. Harlow, of Providence, Rhode Island, preached at 10 a. m. to-day from Ephesians iii. IT. His sermon was one of the best and most effective delivered during the week. He was followed by Rev. B. Pomeroy, who gave one of his characteristic exhortations. The children's meeting was held again at one o'clock to-day. Re v. E. Pavson Hammond spoke to some extent. This meeting is in female hands, and is daily growing in interest; the chil dren gladly flock out to receive the instructions of those interested in their welfare. These re marks are equally true of the meeting held for the special bene lit of ladies, (though aJl are in vited.) and conducted by Mrs. Keen and Mrs. Langrord. Dr. Butler, late of India, preached at 3 p. m. from Genesis, 17:1. The sermon will long rest in the hearts of those who heard it. We notice that some correspondents are an nouncing that there are 900 tents erected. This is not so. There are now just 673 up, and per haps twenty more yet to be erected. Thirty eight have been put up since yesterday morn ing; 350 preachers have arrived up to date. Ijr.rnrcnojr Rkfvsbd.?On Saturday, in the Fruity Court, Judge Wylle, an application for an injunction was made in the case of Whitney agt. Ames. Plaintirt' seeks to restrain the de fendant Ames from drawing money from the Treasury of the 1'nited States. The bill sets forth that the plaintirt has just received an award of a claim of ?72,000 from the United States; that of this ?42,000 still remain in the Treasury, and that he has claim to ?5,000 there of under a contract between defendant and himsel/ in which, in consideration of plaintiffs service in accomplishing the withdrawal of op position on the part of Gen. Dyer against cer tain claims before the Navy Department, ?5,000 is to be allowed and paid, on the recommenda tion of Gen. Dyer, to purchase three steel bore guns; the charge of conspiracy against General Dyer to be withdrawn. Plaintiff therefore asks an injunction to restrain the withdrawal of the ?5,000 from tbe Treasury, and further process ?o enable him to receive the same. Judge Wy lie refused to grant the injunction, saying that he was surprised that the process of the court should be sought in aid of such a claim. He did not think the claim legitimate. Gentlemen who pursued claims sometimes had their mind? warped on this subject; but he would frown upon everything of the kind. Here was a claim in which it was set out that a prosecution begun in Congress should be abandoned in case the officer prosecuted withdrew his opposition to a certain claim. Such contracts could never be enforced through him. Wi nxvit from the publishers, Judd & Det weiler, or this city, No. 2 of the excellent A'a tumal Me li'dl Journal, edited by Chris. C. Cox.
