SMroeuvo Opium.?Information has been received at the Tieaaurv Department to the ettect that 2<?0 pounds ot smoking opium have iK-en seized on board the Pacitic mail steamship Japan at San Francisco, which vessel plies be tween that port and Hong Kong, and lo pounds on board a steamer ot the same company plying between Panama and San Francisco, for attempt to violate the customs revenue laws. The opium on the Japan was f<>und concealed in a fresh water tank in the engineer's department. Captain Khiridge. the agent of the line imme diately discharged three engineers from the Japan, and one from the steamer running to Panama. The opium is valued at $15 per pound, and the duties on it are *6 per pound in gold. The Department having reason to believe that certain officers on these steamers have been smuggling goods by sending them ashore by women ot doubtful reputation, who came aboard to visit them while the vessel was discharging cargo, has taken measures to prevent further violations of the law in this manner.
